Chapter 39: Emily Resignation

Authors POV

As Emily walked home, the words of Williams got into her. “He's not just cute but also smart.” Emily had always admired Williams but she knew she had to be careful.

She had never seen her boss speaking in such a manner. His calm demeanor and understanding.

Just then, she remembered Amelia's reaction. She felt Amelia might not be so comfortable if she's around Williams and can't blame her if she felt wary. She won't want the same thing that happened while they were in high school to repeat itself. The betrayal still lingered.

“I need to resign from my position in that company. I don't want Amelia to have a weird feeling that something is going on between Williams and I. I need to do everything in my power to prevent history from repeating itself. I need my friend back.”

She picked her phone from the table, took a deep breath. She then scrolled through her contacts, she finally came across The company's HR department. She waited for someone to pick the call as she dialed the number.

“You're speaking with Joe, from the HR department. Is there any way I can assist you?” A calm voice said.

“I'd like to submit my resignation, I'm Emily, the personal assistant to the CEO.”

The line was quiet for a while. “Sorry, there's no person named Emily working in this company and can I know why you're resigning?”

“My bad, I'm Linda.” She paused. “And about me resigning, it's just for the best and you don't have to get permission from the CEO before you do this.”

“Okay then, I will get back to you after processing your resignation. You'll get an email shortly about the details.” The HR representative said, nodding her head l, even if she wasn't seen by Emily.

Emily felt a mix of emotions as she hung the phone. She actually loves her job. But at that point she felt it was necessary to do that since she couldn't risk losing Amelia's trust anymore.

Emily felt a sense of determination as she was willing to do all necessary things to move forward from her past and regain her friendship.

The HR department had no right to let Emily go off from her duty without information from Williams.

Williams' phone rang. It was late for the GR department to call. “What's going on?” He asked.

“Well, a lady named Linda, who I assume is your personal secretary, called, telling us she wants to resign from her duty.”

“Linda? Why will she do that?” I asked.

“I had no idea sir. Should we do as she said?”

“No. Don't, she can't resign without telling me. She can come with her resignation letter tomorrow and give it to me personally before I can let her go. Deliver the message to her “

“Noted sir.”

While Emily checked her email from time to time, she didn't get any message. “Won't they approve it? What's taking him so long?”

Just then a message came in. We were instructed not to. You'll have to give the CEO your resignation letter yourself. She read.

“Urghhh, why does he have to make me do this?”

I walked towards his office the next day, as I walked majestically, I swung my waist, my resignation letter in my hand.

As I got to his office door, I hesitated for a while before walking in. I tried all I could to compose myself as I got in.

“Sir—”

“What's going on?” He asked, cutting me off. While he looked up from his computer.

“I'm leaving sir, this is my resignation letter you asked for.” She said, taking a deep breath before she handed the letter over to Williams.

“Why did you change your mind? I told you I wasn't going to sack you, so why are you doing all of this?” Williams said, his eyes widened in surprise on why Emily was acting strange.

“I have my reasons sir.” She said finally. Not sure if she should state the reason she was leaving. It wasn't necessary for her.

Williams decided not to push the issue. “You're the best secretary that has ever worked for me, I can't just let you go just like that.”

He had tried not to push the issue.

“Working as your favorite secretary actually means a lot to me.” She said, feeling a pang of sadness for leaving.

She stood for a while before turning to leave.

“Wait, Emily.”

Emily's heart raced, as she turned back to face him.

“Are you leaving because of anyone? Do you have to?”

Emily on the other hand felt she had done what was needed. She smiled at Williams before turning to leave the office.

She was relieved as soon as she walked out of the office. It was a difficult task to do but she was glad she finally did it.

Later that day, Williams had gone to see Amelia. He talked to her about Emily's action but she smiled.

“Why are you smiling?” She asked.

“I love Emily so well, I'm sure she left because I will feel uncomfortable if she's around you.”

“Nah, that can't be the reason Emily did that.”

“You have to call her back. I can't let her do that because of me. I know how difficult it might have been for her to get the job, working in your company, she can't just throw this opportunity away.”

“Well, I think you're right. But I thought I should let her go if that's what she wanted.”

Williams kept calling her but there was no response. “You left an important document, you need to come get it in the office now.” He lied.

“I will be leaving now.” He said.

Amelia stood up from the couch. “Hold on, I will go with you.”

When they got to the company, Williams led the way, while Amelia walked beside him.

“Where is she? She's supposed to be here.” Amelia asked, while looking around the empty office.

Williams turned to face her. “She'll be here soon.”

Just then, Emily walked in. She was surprised by the scene she saw. What was Amelia doing here?

“I'm here to pick up the file.”

“There's no file for pickup Emily, you left your paying job because of me? You'd give up on your dream easily? That's so bad,  disappointing.”

Emily rolled her eyes. “I thought it was for the best. I know how Williams is so fond of you, he really loves you. Being in the picture again is all I'm trying to avoid.”

“I see where this is coming from. That's not enough reason to resign. Moreover, I and Williams haven't defined our relationship yet.”

“Huh?” Williams said, with a low voice.
