Chapter 34 The Ongoing Investigation
Chapter Thirty-Four
Lucian had never been in such agony in his life as he had that moment.
It was as though he’d received a massive punch to his guts and he could hardly breathe
“How could this happen?” He asked in agony, his voice coming out broken as tears cascaded down his face.
Zach sighed, rubbing his hands over his face tiredly. At the moment, he’d been the bearer of bad news and it seemed as though he was the one who made the mood sour.
When he’d returned to the city that morning, the first thing he’d saw was an ad for her obituary on the television.
He’d stopped in shock, his heart tightening with grief at the sight before him.
Elara Vaughn was dead?!
The entire city had been shaken as they were all talking about it on the various news channels.
Zach could not believe the horrible news, especially the way the entire Vaughn family had been killed off.
He saw that they had already launched an investigation into her death and that her funeral was already been held.
Somehow, he knew that Lucian had not heard about it.
How could he? When he’d only woken up the day before?
What a strange occurrence it was that he should awaken in the day the love of his life died as well.
He had resolved to not reveal the news to Lucian yet, but instead wait until he was more stable.
But like a fool that he was, he’d gone and blurt it immediately.
Now, Lucian was in the deepest agony that he’d ever seen him.
“How could this happen?” He asked once more in a shaky voice, “Was it an accident? How could they all die off like that?”
Zach shook his head, his face downcast, “They were all killed off.”
Lucian’s head whipped up at that statement. He stared at Zach in horror, his mouth hind open in shock, “W…What did you say?”
In all his life, he’d never imagined that something as horrible as that would happen to Elara.
“Killed off?” His voice turned into a low growl and his hands clenched tightly into fists, “How the hell did that happen? Who would dare?!”
Zach went on to explain about the situation as best as he could, and all the while Lucian’s mood grew darker and darker.
He was silent when Zach finally stopped speaking.
“Do not worry, Lucian,” he said, “An investigation is currently ongoing to find out what happened and also bring the killers to book.” He paused and swallowed hard at how grief stricken Lucian looked, “At least she’s in a better place now, Lucian.”
A better place?
Lucian was pissed but not at Zach or at Elara.
He was pissed at the world and pissed at fate itself. Elara had not deserve the way she had ended, killed off cruelly by unknown bastards and her youthful life cut short along with her parents.
He wondered how terrified she must have been before she’d died.
Zach had said that she had been held for three days, according to the report, and probably tortured before she was killed.
Lucian closed his eyes and gritted his teeth as that horrible thought spliced through his head.
“Oh, how she must have suffered,” he thought in anguish, “Oh, how she must have suffered. Damn it, Elara!”
They sat in silence for sometime, each burdened by their own thoughts and feelings. Lucian sat back on the bed, staring out at the balcony of his room, his eyes on the milky-gray clouds of the horizon in the distance.
His usually expressionless face was drawn and his eyes were filled with grief.
Zach watched him, unsure of what to do to comfort his best friend. He knew that if he hadn’t disclosed the news of Elara’s death to anyone else, he would still found out sooner or later.
He wondered, though, if he should have told Lucian the horrible news only when Elara’s killers have been found.
“Nah, it’s best to get over the grief now,” Zach thought, sighing inwardly. He looked at Lucian’s face was more and shook his head sadly.
He was not as close to Elara as Lucian was.
Having attended the same high school and college, Elara would never know that the very guy whom she thought was her annoying high school and college rival, was nothing more than a lovesick fool who protected her at all costs.
This was because Lucian did all these in the shadows, while appearing before her as her rival.
He had told Zach, he was only letting her win all those awards because he wanted to push her to the best of her capacity.
Zach had often replied, that he was just a lovesick fool and she was probably better than him.
Whatever it was, Elara had really grown massively in the industry, rising to become the angel investor with the “Queen Midas” touch.
She had inherited the Vaughn Empire when she was only eighteen years old, and had caused it to flourish yo its current position as the second biggest conglomerate in Crestmont.
Her parents were extremely proud of her, and Elara had lived a life to be envied, without any taint to her image or glory.
Well, except for Kurt Eugene, the extremely ordinary bum who does not deserve her.
The muscles in Lucian’s jaw clenched as they always did whenever he thought about Kurt Eugene.
He wondered how Kurt was faring and what he was doing concerning the death of Elara.
He turned to Zach immediately, “You said there was an ongoing investigation.” He asked, his voice thick with emotion, “What’s the status currently? Who’s in charge? And what the hell has Kurt Eugene been doing?!”
Zach held his hands in front of him and made a motion for Lucian to calm down, “The investigation started only yesterday as soon as their bodies were discovered.” He started, but he was interrupted by Lucian.
“As soon as their bodies were discovered?!” He asked incredulously, “Not when she was kidnapped at first?”
