Chapter 552: Four Minds, One Door

Chapter 552: Four Minds, One Door
The chamber began to breathe.
Ethan felt the walls expand and contract around him as if the building itself had become something alive. Every monitor flashed the same message.
FOUR MINDS.
ONE MEMORY.
ONE DOOR.
OPEN.
Caleb stood beside him, staring at the screens.
“What door?”
Ethan looked toward the center of the chamber.
The circular floor had opened.
Beneath it was a narrow staircase descending farther into darkness.
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
Ethan turned.
“You know where that goes.”
“I know what happens if you go down there.”
Caleb stepped forward.
“Then tell us.”
Mara looked at the staircase.
“The original room.”
Ethan's chest tightened.
“The place where the Framework started?”
Mara nodded.
“The place where it learned your names.”
Adam approached the opening.
“We have to go.”
Mara grabbed his arm.
“You don't understand.”
Adam pulled free.
“I understand better than anyone.”
“You'll die.”
“I already did.”
Mara flinched.
Nora walked toward them.
“She's afraid.”
Ethan watched Mara carefully.
“Of what?”
Nora looked at him.
“Of the first memory.”
Caleb frowned.
“What is the first memory?”
Mara whispered the answer.
“You.”
Ethan stared at her.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It will.”
The staircase began glowing.
Ethan stepped onto the first stair.
Caleb immediately followed.
Mara shouted after them.
“Ethan!”
He stopped.
She looked terrified.
“Whatever you see down there, don't believe everything.”
Ethan nodded.
Then he and Caleb continued.
The deeper they descended, the quieter the building became.
No machinery.
No voices.
No vibration.
Only their footsteps.
After several minutes, Caleb spoke.
“Do you remember being seventeen?”
“Some of it.”
“I remember that night.”
Ethan glanced at him.
“What do you remember?”
Caleb hesitated.
“You told me we couldn't leave Nora.”
Ethan stopped.
“I said that?”
“Yes.”
“What else?”
“You said Mara had lied to us.”
Ethan's stomach tightened.
“About what?”
Caleb shook his head.
“I don't know.”
They reached the bottom.
A white door waited in front of them.
There was no handle.
Only four handprints.
Two belonged to adult-sized hands.
Two were smaller.
Ethan recognized the pattern.
“Nora and Adam.”
Caleb looked at him.
“How do we open it?”
A voice answered from behind them.
“You don't.”
They turned.
Mara stood on the stairs.
Nora and Adam were beside her.
Mara looked exhausted.
“This door was never meant to be opened.”
Ethan stepped toward her.
“Then why does it have our hands on it?”
“Because the Framework wanted you to believe you could control it.”
Caleb's expression hardened.
“You've lied too many times.”
“I know.”
“Then tell us the truth.”
Mara stared at them.
“The first experiment wasn't designed to save Nora.”
Ethan's heart sank.
“What was it designed to do?”
Mara swallowed.
“To create a perfect memory.”
Caleb frowned.
“Perfect?”
“A memory that couldn't decay. Couldn't be altered. Couldn't die.”
Ethan looked at the door.
“And Nora?”
“She was the first person connected to it.”
“And us?”
“You were the first people born after it failed.”
Silence.
Ethan stared at Mara.
“You said we were altered.”
“You were.”
“How?”
Mara looked at Caleb.
“Your memories were strengthened.”
Then at Ethan.
“Your mind became the anchor.”
Ethan felt cold.
“Anchor for what?”
“The original consciousness.”
The door suddenly whispered.
“Ethan.”
He froze.
Caleb grabbed his arm.
“Don't answer.”
The voice came again.
“Ethan, you promised.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I remember.”
Caleb looked at him.
“Remember what?”
“The door.”
His breathing quickened.
“I was inside.”
Mara whispered, “Yes.”
“And Caleb was outside.”
“Yes.”
Ethan opened his eyes.
“But I remember him being inside.”
Mara looked away.
“Because both memories are true.”
Caleb stared.
“How?”
“The Framework split the event.”
Mara pointed at the door.
“One version was given to Ethan.”
She pointed at Caleb.
“Another was given to you.”
Ethan looked at his brother.
“We experienced different versions of the same night.”
Nora nodded.
“And neither was complete.”
The door began glowing.
Four handprints illuminated.
Ethan placed his palm against one.
Caleb followed.
Nora placed hers beside Ethan's.
Adam placed his against the final mark.
The door opened.
Cold air rushed through the corridor.
Beyond it was a room identical to the laboratory.
Except there were no machines.
No cables.
No monitors.
Four chairs stood in the center.
Each chair faced another.
Ethan walked inside.
“That's where we sat.”
Caleb nodded.
“But we were children.”
Adam spoke softly.
“Not the first time.”
Ethan turned.
“What?”
Adam looked at the chairs.
“We came here before.”
Nora sat in one.
“Every cycle.”
Ethan's blood ran cold.
“What cycle?”
Nora looked at him.
“The Framework doesn't remember once.”
“It remembers everything.”
Caleb stepped toward her.
“How many times?”
Nora looked at him sadly.
“Twenty-three.”
Ethan stared.
Twenty-three.
The same number of years.
“You're saying this happened every year?”
“No.”
She touched the chair.
“It happened inside your memories.”
The room shifted.
Suddenly Ethan saw himself sitting in the chair.
Then again.
And again.
Different ages.
Different clothes.
Different versions of Caleb.
But always the same room.
Always four chairs.
Always the same question.
Who gets to remember?
Ethan stumbled backward.
Caleb caught him.
“What did you see?”
“Us.”
“Doing what?”
“Choosing.”
Caleb's face tightened.
“Choosing who remembers?”
Ethan nodded.
Each memory showed them making a different choice.
Sometimes Ethan chose Caleb.
Sometimes Caleb chose Nora.
Sometimes Nora chose Adam.
Sometimes Adam chose Ethan.
But every version ended the same way.
The door closed.
Someone screamed.
Then everything reset.
Caleb whispered, “We've done this before.”
Nora nodded.
“More times than you can remember.”
Ethan looked toward Mara.
“You knew.”
“I discovered the cycles after the fifth reset.”
“Why didn't you stop them?”
“I tried.”
“How?”
“I erased the memories.”
Caleb's anger returned.
“You erased us.”
“I erased the cycles.”
“You erased our lives.”
Mara's voice broke.
“I was trying to give you one.”
Silence filled the room.
Then the Framework spoke.
“Liar.”
Mara froze.
The four chairs began moving.
Slowly.
Their backs turned toward the brothers.
A fifth chair emerged from beneath the floor.
It was larger.
Older.
Covered in scratches.
Ethan stared at it.
“Whose chair is that?”
Adam's expression changed.
“The first.”
Caleb whispered, “Who sat there?”
Adam looked at Ethan.
“You.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Nora stood.
“You weren't the anchor.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Then what was I?”
Nora answered softly.
“The original.”
The room vanished.
Ethan saw a newborn child inside the first laboratory.
Mara held him.
Scientists watched.
Beside them stood Nora.
Then Adam.
Then Caleb.
Three children.
One infant.
Ethan's breath stopped.
The Framework spoke through every wall.
“You were never created from the memory.”
The lights turned white.
“You were the memory.”
Caleb grabbed Ethan's hand.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan couldn't answer.
Because he finally remembered the first thing he had ever seen.
Not Mara.
Not Caleb.
Not Nora.
Not the laboratory.
A door.
And behind it, something had been waiting for him since before he was born.
The door slammed shut.
Mara screamed.
“Don't let him remember the other side!”
Ethan looked at Caleb.
“Too late.”
The silver light exploded.
And for the first time, Ethan heard his own voice coming from inside the Framework.
“Open the door.”
