Chapter 52 Let the Game Begin
I looked at the time the message entered and it was two hours after I left Alex’s place.
“How on earth did she get my number?” I thought to myself, then I glanced through the remaining content of the message.
“… as you heard earlier. I’m pregnant for Alex. I know you are his ex-girlfriend and that you’ve been clinging on to him for the longest, but it’s high time you stopped.”
I stared at my phone’s screen, and I didn’t even know if I should get mad at the text I received or not.
Lena noticed that I had been staring at my phone for a while and turned to face me.
“Are you okay?” she asked, her brows pulling together.
“Oh, yes,” I replied quickly.
Then I locked my phone’s screen and stuffed it into my bag.
I had a more pressing situation and I couldn’t afford to be bothered by that.
It was already midnight, and we were still waiting for Theo to wake up. Lena had already rested her head against the wall and slept off.
Dave didn’t sleep. My eyes were also wide open.
After a few minutes, Dave finally checked his phone.
Then, he stood up and walked closer to me.
“I have to go now. I will be back in the morning,” he whispered, not wanting to wake Lena up.
“You don’t have to come in the morning. You have tried enough,” I said, my voice low.
“I have to,” he replied.
With that, he tapped my shoulder slightly and headed toward the exit.
After watching him walk out, I let out a deep breath and buried my face in my palms with my elbows on my thigh.
ALEX HART’S POV
When Joan left angrily after hearing about Cassandra’s pregnancy, my heart sank.
Without thinking, I stormed into my room, picked up my car key, and rushed back to the living room.
Cassandra had already entered, but I didn’t care. I didn’t notice that she had walked in right after me.
“Where are you going?” she asked.
I gave her a sharp look and headed out of the house. Then I drove straight to Joan’s place.
My heart pounded against my chest with each turn I took and my mind was spiraling with the thought that Joan wouldn’t even want to hear me out when I got to her place.
“Oh, my God. What have I gotten myself into?” I muttered, banging my hand on the steering wheel occasionally.
When I got to her place, her car wasn’t outside.
Then I waited for a while, thinking she would arrive anytime soon.
Several minutes passed and I didn’t see her.
I summoned all the courage I could get and walked slowly towards the door, my heart beating rapidly with each step.
I hesitated at first, then I finally placed a soft knock on the door.
I knocked countless times but no one answered.
I waited for a while, then I knocked again.
Still no response.
I took out my phone and called her several times, but she didn’t pick up any of my calls.
Hopelessly, I sat down on the doorstep, and lowered my head to my knees, waiting for her arrival.
I would raise my head anytime I heard footsteps or the sound of a car approaching, but none of them was Joan.
Lena and Theo weren’t home either.
“Where are you?” I would mutter to myself at intervals.
Hours passed.
The sky had darkened completely and I didn’t even realize how much time had passed.
Reluctantly, I stood up and knocked softly on the door again as if I knew no one would answer.
When I didn’t get any reply, I walked back slowly to my car, different questions running through my mind.
“Did they relocate?”
“No, I don’t think so.”
“What could be happening?”
I stared at the door for a moment, then I started my car and drove back home.
CASSANDRA’S POV
When Alex stormed out of the house, I scoffed.
“I will be waiting for you,” I muttered, staring at the door he had just stormed out of.
Then I walked calmly to the couch and sat down, crossing my legs elegantly like I owned the place.
After a few minutes, I stood up and found my way to the minibar. I picked up a wine glass, poured myself a generous amount of wine, and sipped slowly as I spun happily to the living room.
I took a gulp, smiled, and set the wine glass down carefully.
I took my phone out of my purse and sent a text to Mrs. Hart.
“I’m at Alex’s place but he has followed that woman.”
“Don’t worry, he will come back to you. I will make sure I set him straight before your parents return to the country,” her reply came shortly after.
“Parents… parents indeed,” I scoffed and tossed my phone to the side.
After a few minutes, I got bored, so I stood up and walked towards his room to check if anything would pique my interest.
When I got to his room’s entrance, I pushed the door open without hesitation.
As I entered, the faint smell of his cologne was the first thing that welcomed me. I closed my eyes for a second and inhaled the scent deeply, my lips curling slightly into a smile.
I walked to his wardrobe, opened it, and ran my fingers across the neatly arranged clothes, pulled one out, close to my face then I sniffed it slowly.
“Hmm,” I smiled.
I was about to put the shirt back when my gaze caught something else.
A messy stack of papers was lying around on his desk.
Curiously, I walked over and flipped through them.
I saw contracts, blueprints, and some other files.
Then a rectangular card slipped out and landed on the ground.
I picked it up and the name on it caught my attention.
Joan Cole.
“I found you,” I muttered under my breath.
Without hesitation, I typed the contact on the card to my phone and saved it.
Then I crafted a message and hit send.
As the message was delivered, my lips curled into a small but satisfactory smile.
“Let the game begin,” I mumbled to myself.
I didn’t wait for Alex to return any longer, I went back to the living room, picked up my bag, and left.
ALEX HART’S POV
I couldn’t sleep throughout the night and I couldn’t wrap my head around why nobody was at Joan’s place.
First thing the next morning, I set out for Joan’s place again.
“She should be home by now,” I told myself as I got into my car.
When I got there, her car was still not there.
“Her car might be at a mechanic’s workshop,” I told myself again.
Then I walked towards the door and knocked again.
Still no response.
Just as I turned around to leave, a car pulled over in front of the house, and it wasn’t Joan’s, that... I was very sure of.
But I knew I had seen that car before.
Before I could process it, Joan got out of the front passenger side, then Dave got out of the driver’s side.
“Why is Joan in his car this early morning?” I asked myself, my stomach tightening.
