Chapter 40 Jealousy or Accusations?
Where is that coming from?
I looked behind me and saw a woman I had never seen before. She looked very pretty with pouty lips, her brown-black hair flowing over her shoulders.
I definitely shouldn’t forget to say that she looked expensive.
Too expensive.
Everything from her head to toe shouted wealth.
“I’m sorry?” I said, trying to make sure I heard right.
“I’m Jane Wilton… Dave’s kid sister,” she said smiling as she slowly walked up to me.
“Oh…” I muttered, looking at her in admiration.
That explained why she looked so sophisticated.
“I’m Joan Cole. The designer of the project,” I replied with a polite smile.
“I know,” she said, stretching her hand to give me a handshake.
“You did a great job,” she added.
“Thank you,” I said and took her hand.
She moved closer to me and leaned against the railing.
“I’ve been observing the two of you since you got here,” she started.
“Huh,” I muttered softly, my eyebrows pulling slightly.
“Yeah… and I’ve never seen my brother look at a woman like that before,” she continued.
I just stood there looking at her because I didn’t know what to say.
She paused for a while, then continued.
“Girls flock around Dave every time, but he doesn’t look their way at all. So imagine how surprised I was to see him looking at you that way.”
I forced a smile, already thinking about how to reply without sounding awkward or defensive.
She looked at me for a while then she chuckled.
“You look like you are older than me. Is it okay if I talk to you casually?” she said, still smiling.
“Not at all,” I shook my head.
“I like you already,” she replied, letting out a satisfactory grin.
Then she looked in the direction of the hall.
“I should go before they start looking for me,” she said.
With that, she left while I stood there until she was out of my sight.
“Wow,” I muttered in disbelief.
When Lena and I got home, I kicked off my heels dramatically, dropped my purse, and sank onto the couch.
“I’m so tired,” I said.
Lena laughed and dropped into the seat beside me.
“I’m so ready for the next. I’m only interested in going to rich people’s parties now,” she smirked.
Suddenly I stood up and reached for my purse.
“Look at this,” I said, excitement replacing the fatigue in my body as I opened my purse and started pulling the business cards I got out one after the other.
“Wait… you got all of these cards from that party?” she asked, her eyes widening.
“Yeah baby,” I said, grinning as I spread the cards on the table.
“I’m going global soon… just be ready,” I added.
Lena gasped dramatically as she stared at the cards on the table.
“I will definitely start telling people I knew you before fame,” she teased.
I tossed the throw pillow at her, laughing.
“Instead of you connecting with people, you were busy frolicking with Marcus,” I said, jokingly.
“It’s a connection too if you look at it from a brighter side,” she said, biting her lower lip and trying to hide her smile.
“I liked his company,” she added.
“Oh, really?” I said, raising my brows slightly.
“It feels like we’d click… like really click,” she added.
“Lena Brooks… you had better focus on your influencing and modeling gigs,” I teased.
“Shut up, I will decide what to do with my life,” she replied, throwing a pillow at me this time.
“I wouldn’t mind seeing him again though,” she smiled, leaning back into the couch.
“That’s your business… goodnight,” I said and dragged myself to my room.
On getting to my room, I took off my clothes and headed straight into the bathroom.
After a few minutes, I got out and slipped into my nightwear. Then I took my phone out of my purse and opened Alex’s chat out of habit.
Strangely, there was no text from him, not even to ask if I got home safely.
“Maybe he got home late and got tired,” I told myself.
Then I texted him first.
“Did you get home safely?”
I stared at the screen and waited for a few minutes but got no reply.
Then, I locked the screen and tossed my phone to one side.
“Maybe he has slept,” I muttered to myself and lay in bed.
The next morning, I didn’t overthink it, so I got dressed and headed for his place.
When I got there, I stood at the door for a short while before knocking.
And when I knocked, the door opened almost immediately.
“Hey,” he said, looking surprised.
“I came to check on you,” I said, stepping forward.
“You didn’t reply to my text, so I got worried,” I added.
“I’m fine,” he said, stepping aside and letting me in.
He then closed the door and walked behind me as I moved toward the chairs.
“Are you sure?” I paused and turned to look at him.
“That was very unusual of you. I even had to hear from Lena that you already left the party,” I added, still looking at him.
He didn’t answer. He looked at me for a while then moved over to the chair.
“I figured you were having a nice time with Dave… so I didn’t want to disturb that moment,” he finally said, avoiding my gaze.
“Are you for real?” I asked, my brows pulling together.
“You left with him and didn’t return, Joan… so tell me, was I supposed to disturb you,” he said, finally looking at me.
“Okay… so is this just jealousy… or accusations?” I asked, trying to calm myself down.
“I just don’t like the idea of you getting close to him,” he muttered.
“And why do you think you can tell me who to be with and who not to?” I asked, crossing my arms.
“I want you back Joan. I want us to go back to how we used to be,” he said suddenly, his gaze fixed on me.
At that moment, my breath stopped.
And before I could say anything, we heard a knock on the door.
“Huh… I’m not expecting anyone,” he muttered.
