Victor's Ritual Revealed
"Get down!" Ethan yelled, pulling Thorne to the floor as the glass vial burst above their heads. Green liquid spilled against the wall, sizzling where it touched.
"What was that?" Thorne gasped, his heart beating as he wiped dust from his face.
"Another trap," Ethan muttered, carefully peering around the table they'd ducked behind. "Victor didn't want anyone studying his work."
The two wolves had been holed up in Victor's abandoned lab for hours, trying to piece together what the Moonshadow Alpha had been planning. The pack house was eerily quiet with most wolves either infected or helping the sick. Lucian had ordered Ethan and Thorne to figure out what they were facing while he organized defenses against the growing shadow infection.
"This is the third trap in the last hour," Thorne growled, standing up slowly. "Maybe we should take the hint and leave."
Ethan shook his head firmly. "We can't. Not until we understand what Victor was doing." He turned back to the spread papers on the table. "The ritual wasn't just about possessing wolves. It was something bigger."
Thorne ran a hand through his hair in anger. "How are we supposed to figure this out? These notes are in some kind of code."
"Not code," Ethan amended, holding up a page filled with strange symbols. "It's the ancient wolf language. The same one from the Prophet's Journal that Margot found."
A crash rang from somewhere in the pack house, followed by howls of pain. The shadow infection was spreading faster now, with new cases showing every hour. Time was running out.
"Any luck with the translation?" Thorne asked, glancing nervously at the door.
"Some," Ethan answered, spreading out the papers. "Look at this diagram. It shows three circles forming a triangle around a central point."
Thorne leaned closer. "Just like the setup at the ritual site."
"Exactly. And these markings here..." Ethan pointed to symbols drawn around the edges, "They match the ones we saw carved into the stones."
"But what does it mean?" Thorne asked. "What was Victor trying to do?"
Before Ethan could answer, the door burst open. Both wolves spun around, ready to fight, but relaxed when they saw it was Marco.
"We've got problems," Marco said, his face grim. "More infected. And Lucian just got word from the scouts—Victor's forces are on the move."
"Where?" Thorne asked.
"Heading for the Cave of Echoes," Marco answered. "And Caleb, Aurora, and Serena just left to go there too."
Ethan's blood ran cold. "When?"
"About an hour ago. They took Margot with them." Marco's eyes narrowed with doubt. "They didn't tell anyone they were leaving. One of the guards saw them slip out."
Thorne swore under his breath. "They're walking into a trap."
"We need to warn them," Ethan said, collecting the most important papers. "But first, we need to understand what Victor's planning."
Marco joined them at the table. "What have you found so far?"
Ethan pointed to a detailed picture of what looked like a cave. "I think this is the Cave of Echoes. According to these notes, it's not just a cave—it's a gateway."
"A gateway to what?" Thorne asked.
"The Shadow Realm," Ethan said quietly. "A dimension where the primal wolf spirits dwell—the ones that existed before our kind."
Marco frowned. "I thought that was just a legend."
"It's real," Ethan maintained. "And Victor found a way to open a door to it. That's what the ritual was about."
"But we stopped him," Thorne pointed out. "Aurora and Caleb disrupted the ritual."
Ethan shook his head grimly. "They only stopped it temporarily. Look at this." He held up a page with a detailed lunar chart. "Victor was timing his ritual with the lunar cycle. The blood moon two weeks from now will be even stronger than the last one."
"He's going to try again," Marco realized.
"Yes, but this time, he'll have help." Ethan showed them another page with a picture of three figures standing in a triangle. "The three Bondspeakers—the Breaker, the Maker, and the Keeper."
"Serena, Aurora, and this Gabriel that Margot mentioned," Thorne said. "Her third child."
Ethan nodded. "With all three, Victor could open the gateway completely."
"But why would they help him?" Marco asked. "Aurora and Serena would never agree to it."
"They wouldn't have to agree," Ethan said quietly. "Victor's notes talk about using their blood to power the ritual. He doesn't need their cooperation—just their power."
The consequences hung heavy in the air. If Victor captured the three Bondspeakers, he could drain their power to open the gateway forever.
"There's more," Ethan continued, turning to a page filled with tiny writing. "If Victor succeeds in opening the gateway, he could control the shadow spirits. Any wolf infected would become part of his army—bound to him through the shadows."
"Every pack would fall," Thorne whispered.
"Not just packs," Ethan amended. "Every wolf everywhere. The shadows spread through pack bonds, but once there are enough infected, they can jump to any wolf they encounter."
Marco's face hardened. "Then we need to stop him. Now."
"Wait," Ethan said, studying the final pages. "There's something here about a counter-ritual." He traced the marks with his finger. "A way to close the gateway permanently."
"How?" Thorne asked.
"It requires the same three Bondspeakers," Ethan explained. "But instead of using their blood to open the gateway, they would use their combined power to seal it."
"So Aurora, Serena, and Gabriel would need to work together?" Marco sounded skeptical. "Gabriel is working with Victor."
"Maybe he can be turned," Thorne offered. "He's their brother, after all."
Ethan continued reading. "There's a catch. To seal the gateway, the three Bondspeakers would need to..."
He trailed off, his face growing troubled.
"What?" Thorne pushed. "What would they need to do?"
"Sacrifice their gifts," Ethan said quietly. "The ritual would close the gateway forever, but they would lose their Bondspeaker abilities."
Marco frowned. "That doesn't sound so bad. A small price to pay for saving everyone."
"Maybe not for Aurora and Serena," Ethan agreed. "But Gabriel? His entire identity is built around his power. Would he give that up?"
A howl heard outside—the Crimson Fang emergency signal. All three wolves tensed.
"We need to move," Thorne said. "If Caleb and the others are heading to the Cave of Echoes, they're walking right into Victor's hands."
"There's one more thing," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "One detail Victor uncovered about the Shadow Realm."
He held up a page showing a dark, twisted landscape filled with shadowy people.
"The shadow spirits aren't just trying to possess wolves," Ethan stated. "They're refugees. Their world is dying—collapsing in on itself. They're desperate to escape."
"That doesn't excuse them hurting our people," Marco growled.
"No, but it explains their desperation," Ethan responded. "And it means Victor is playing with forces he can't control. If too many shadow spirits cross over at once..."
"What happens?" Thorne asked.
"The barriers between worlds shatter completely," Ethan said grimly. "Both realms collapse."
The three wolves stared at each other, the weight of this knowledge resting heavy on their shoulders.
"We need to warn Lucian and Tobias," Marco said finally. "And send help to Caleb and the others."
Thorne nodded. "I'll gather my rebels. They're not infected yet."
"I'll keep working on the counter-ritual," Ethan said. "There must be more details here somewhere."
As Marco and Thorne turned to leave, a low growl stopped them in their tracks. They spun around to see a wolf in the doorway—one of the pack guards. But his eyes were totally black, and dark veins spread across his face.
"He's infected," Marco whispered.
The infected wolf snarled, blocking their exit. Behind him, more shadows moved in the hallway—more infected wolves.
"We're trapped," Thorne realized.
Ethan quickly gathered the most important papers. "There's another way out. Through the lab's back room."
They backed away slowly as the infected wolf advanced, its movements jerky and unnatural.
"Go," Marco ordered. "I'll hold them off."
"There are too many," Thorne argued.
"Doesn't matter," Marco replied, his eyes never leaving the advancing threat. "You two know Victor's plan now. You have to get that information to Lucian and the others."
Before they could argue further, Marco shifted into his wolf form—a massive gray beast with battle scars across his muzzle. He launched himself at the infected wolf, giving Ethan and Thorne an opening to run.
They sprinted through the back room, hearing the sounds of fighting behind them. Ethan clutched the papers to his chest, knowing they held the key to stopping Victor's plans.
"This way," Thorne called, leading them down a narrow hallway to a small window. "We can get out here."
As they squeezed through the window and dropped to the ground outside, howls filled the air—both the normal calls of their packmates and the strange, distorted sounds of the infected.
"The infection is spreading faster," Ethan said, looking around at the chaos consuming the pack grounds. Wolves ran in all directions, some trying to help the sick, others trying to escape them.
"We need to find Lucian," Thorne said. "Now."
They ran toward the main house, avoiding infected wolves along the way. When they finally burst into the command room, they found Lucian and Tobias surrounded by maps and worried-looking pack members.
"Where have you been?" Lucian asked. "We've been trying to find you."
"Victor's lab," Ethan explained excitedly. "We know what he's planning."
He spread the papers on the table, quickly explaining what they'd found. Lucian's face got darker with each revelation.
"So the Cave of Echoes is the focal point," Tobias said. "And Caleb and Aurora are heading right for it."
"Along with Serena and Margot," Thorne added. "All three Bondspeakers in one place—exactly what Victor wants."
"We need to send help," Ethan urged. "Now, before it's too late."
Lucian nodded grimly. "I'll lead a team. Tobias, you stay here and manage the infected."
"I'm coming with you," Thorne declared.
"Me too," Ethan added. "I can translate any more symbols we find."
Lucian looked like he wanted to argue but nodded instead. "Fine. We leave in five minutes. Gather only healthy wolves."
As the others rushed to prepare, Ethan stepped outside for a moment, needing fresh air to clear his head. The night sky above was clear and star-filled, but on the horizon, dark clouds were forming. The wind carried a strange scent—cold and alien.
A small sound made him turn. A young pack member stood close, watching him with fearful eyes.
"Is it true?" the young wolf asked. "That the world is ending?"
Ethan paused, unsure how to answer. "We're going to stop it," he said eventually. "I promise."
The young wolf nodded, but didn't look convinced. "They say Victor has our Luna. That he's going to use her to control all wolves."
Ethan frowned. "What Luna? Whose Luna?"
"The mother of the triplets," the young wolf answered. "The true Luna of both packs."
Before Ethan could ask more questions, Lucian called for him. Their relief party was ready to leave.
As they raced through the forest toward the Cave of Echoes, Ethan's mind spun with this new knowledge. If Margot was the true Luna, that would make her children royal blood—more powerful than anyone had realized.
Suddenly, the forest ahead lit up with an eerie green glow. The ground shook beneath their feet, and the air filled with a high-pitched whine that made their ears hurt.
"What is that?" someone shouted.
Ethan felt his blood turn to ice as he recognized the signs from Victor's notes. "He's starting the ritual early," he called to Lucian. "We're too late!"
The sky above the Cave of Echoes split open with a crack like thunder, showing a swirling vortex of darkness shot through with green lightning. From its depths came a sound like thousands of people screaming at once.
The doorway was opening.
