Chapter 39 The fire
Zeev.
There were small rocky steps leading up to the back of the building. It was dark in this part, and only a few people wandered the port. At the top of the steps, we looked for an entry. We couldn't go to the main gate.
"There is just a window here. At least three people can get inside. The rest will stay behind to notify us if something comes up."
"I'm not standing here," Laken said as he pushed forward, taking his mask off his face to look me in the eye.
He couldn't go in there. He was full of surprises, and I didn't want anything that would disrupt this mission for us. But as it stood right now, I couldn't leave him behind because it was going to get even worse out here with him.
"Fine..." I turned, pointing a finger at him. My tone was deadly; I was serious about this one. "If you try anything stupid while we are in there, I will personally kill you."
He scoffed and turned away from me.
I used an iron rod to create an opening at the window in front of us. It was an iron window with almost-rusty rods, which is why it was easy to break through. The entire thing fell to the floor with a light noise. I went in first—my head, my hands, and then my entire body to the floor.
I straightened and helped Mann. He lent a hand to Tako, and Tako lent a hand to Laken.
"We have to be quiet. We can't afford to get caught."
"We have to find their main house and destroy everything."
"That's an impossibility, given that we don't know where this room is. A fire in the entire building would be better," Laken said, looking around the building. This time, I didn't even know what to tell him.
"We did not come here to start a fire. You better be careful." I gave him a warning as I proceeded to look around for any outlet. I ordered the men to look around as well.
"There is a door on this side," Tako called. I turned around to see him standing in front of a door, ready to knock it down. But we couldn't do that without knowing what was behind it.
"Wait, we can't just break it down without knowing what is behind the door."
"Fuck, we can't keep listening to you. We would be out of here with everything done if we didn't take your advice."
Before I could react to what he said, Laken picked up an iron rod and jammed it into the door. That was all it took for everything to go wrong.
The noises started from the laboratory. Alarm bells started going off.
"Leave. Retire back to Aetheria with immediate effect," I said through the mind-link to the warriors that were outside. We had to take care of this.
"We can't leave without you all, Alpha."
Funny how they referred to me as Alpha when I wasn't even pronounced yet. But they knew, because there was no one else to take that spot. One of my brothers was cut off from that.
"Leave," I said, this time using my Alpha tone. No one argued again, and I suspected that they must have left.
"Come on, let’s go. Let's get out of here."
Footsteps were fast approaching. With the rate these alarms were going off, this place would be surrounded in no time.
"Let’s get out of here!" I insisted, this time yelling. Tako and Mann were already making their way through the window, but Laken stood there like he wasn't part of this.
"I'm not going until we put this place to flames. We need to follow Father's orders. You are not him, and I do not need to follow you."
He kept hitting the door. I had no idea what he was ranting about when a fire suddenly broke out. At the same time, I felt a sting at my right ankle. My eyes scanned the area to see where it came from. Looks like we were finally being surrounded.
Shit! We had no choice but to fight back.
"Fight back!" The only good thing here was that the flames were actually preventing them from coming down to meet us.
When I looked around, Laken wasn't with us.
"He might be trapped in the fire."
A deep sigh left my mouth. He was better off staying back in the house.
"We need to get him to us."
Or just let him die. And when he does, a lot of things would fall into place. Now, I had to find a way to get him out of that place because we couldn't go back without him. His mother was probably going to have a heart attack.
He should have just stayed back.
