Chapter 22 The warning
Naomi
Mr. Rex's hand left my head as if he had touched fire. When I turned, I saw a girl's hands wrapped tightly around him, her face pressed into his back. He turned and placed his hand on her shoulder, trying to push her away, but she didn't even budge.
"Z. Do you know how much I struggled to find you?" She finally let go and looked at him. Then her eyes moved to me, and the excited expression on her face quickly changed into a furious one. She narrowed her eyes.
"Who is this? What is she doing in your office?"
"She..." Mr. Rex looked at me, struggling to come up with words. That wasn't supposed to be difficult.
"I'm his student," I quickly said, to avoid the situation from turning into something else, although I didn't know who the girl was to him. And she didn't have to look at me as if she'd just caught me having a moment with her boyfriend.
"A student," she drawled, nodding her head as if she knew I wasn't just what I said.
"You two seemed to be standing dangerously close to each other when I walked in here." Her entire demeanor turned dangerous.
Okay, I had to leave immediately.
"Come on, Xanther. She is my student. And besides, what are you doing here? You didn't tell me you were coming."
"Do I need to come see you, Z?"
"Rex," he whispered, more into her ear, but I caught it. Wasn't that supposed to be his name?
I shook my head and excused myself from the vicinity, totally leaving out what I came to his office for.
I left without a word and returned to class.
Calix and her friends had left school already. She didn't apologize for what she did yesterday. That left me with a bruised spot on the back of my head, which I had to cover after the plaster was attached to it. I was going to make them pay in one way or another. I was not going to let it go.
Once the classes were over, I took my bag and left the class. I passed by the library and borrowed a physics textbook. We had a project to be presented on Monday, and that was going to help me a lot.
Just when I stepped out of the library, I froze. My breath quickened; the hairs on the back of my neck started to stand erect. The air shifted. It was like someone was watching me in the shadows. I couldn't see them, but the penetrative gaze felt predatory and hungry.
My head moved quickly around so fast that it could break. But I didn't see anyone. It was just students going about their daily school routines. I tossed the book inside my bag and left immediately.
When I reached the school gates, someone came to stand in front of me. When I looked up, I saw her: the girl who had come to see Mr. Rex earlier. I had even forgotten that, as I had a lot of things inside my head.
"You are the girl I saw earlier, right?" she asked, cracking her knuckles together as if she would hit me if I didn't answer.
"Yes," I said, almost in a whisper, not because I was afraid; rather, I didn't want to stand here any longer.
"Others might see that as just some normal relationship between a teacher and a student, but I know things like that, and I'm here to warn you..."
She pressed her lips together and came to stand dangerously close to me.
"He is my boyfriend, and I would do whatever it takes to keep people like you away from him. I wouldn't mind killing. So you better be careful and stay away from him." With that, she turned and walked away.
I shook my head and continued on my way home. Why did I care about whose boyfriend he was?
I told Dean I wouldn't be able to make it to work today as we had a school project—well, not the physics project, but the werewolf hunting thing, which sometimes got me pissed. If it wasn't for the fact that I wanted to catch a werewolf with my own hands and teach them a lesson for taking the most important person away from me, I would have rebelled and stayed back home. This night hunting was more than dangerous, and I didn't want to do it, especially with Calix as the leader.
Talking about Calix, I was ready to give her what she deserved tonight if she tried me again. I had taken more than enough from them.
Once I was home, I went through the physics project and jotted down a few lines before standing up to prepare for the hunt
.
I left a note for Ma'am before stepping out of the house.
At the main road, I stood to flag down a taxi to take me to school, when a black car stopped in front of me. The doors opened, and I didn't bother to look who was inside or to see why they stopped.
"Naomi," that familiar voice that had started to make me feel a certain way called. I didn't answer; I just stood waiting for a taxi to come and get me.
"You're not going to answer me now, or just pretend you don't know me anymore?"
"It would be better if you stay away from me. I don't want your girlfriend seeing us together and thinking that we have something going on." That earned him a chuckle. He spun me around so that I was looking at him.
"I'm sorry about today. That shouldn't have happened."
There was no reason to apologize. It was not like I had a problem with him.
"Okay."
I moved closer to stop a taxi that was approaching. "You don't have to take a taxi. Let me drive you."
"It's okay. I already stopped it. You can head back home to your girlfriend."
Wait! What was it with his girlfriend?
"I said I will drive you." Without even asking, he took my wrist and dragged me into the car.
