Chapter 82 On my terms
Flora
The car drove for two hours. Out of the city. Into the countryside. Until we reached a massive estate hidden behind high walls.
"Where are we?" Rafael asked.
"Home," Lily said simply.
The gates opened. We drove through. The estate was enormous. Modern buildings. Gardens. People walking around. Lots of people. And they all looked like me. Different ages. Different styles. But the same face. The same DNA.
"My God," I whispered.
"Welcome to Haven," Lily said. "Elena's sanctuary for enhanced humans."
She led us into the main building. Through corridors lined with photos. All showing people with my face. Subject L-012. Subject L-034. On and on. Dozens of them.
"How many are there?" I asked.
"One hundred and forty three," Lily said. "All living here. All free."
She opened a door to a large office. Elena sat behind a desk. Older now. Tired looking. But still formidable.
"Flora. Rafael. Welcome," Elena said. "Please, sit."
We sat.
"What is this place?" Rafael demanded.
"A community," Elena said. "Where enhanced humans can live without fear. Without pretending to be something they're not."
"You kidnapped one hundred and forty three people," I said.
"I liberated them," Elena corrected. "From facilities. From families who didn't understand. From lives of hiding."
"They look happy," Rafael observed, looking out the window.
"They are," Elena said. "Because they're finally free to be themselves."
"So why bring us here?" I asked. "What do you want?"
Elena stood. Walked to the window. "I'm dying, Flora. Cancer. Six months at most."
The words hit like a punch.
"I'm sorry," I said automatically.
"Don't be," Elena said. "I've lived a full life. But there's one last thing I need."
"What?" Rafael asked.
"A successor," Elena said. "Someone to run Haven when I'm gone. Someone with my DNA but without my history."
She turned to look at me. "You, Flora."
"Absolutely not," I said immediately.
"Hear me out," Elena said. "You spent three years in prison for trying to save enhanced children. You've fought for us at every turn. You understand what we need. You're perfect for this."
"I'm not you," I said.
"Thank God for that," Elena said. "You're better. You have compassion. Empathy. Things I never developed. You could lead this community into something better."
"Why should we trust you?" Rafael asked. "You've manipulated us from the start."
"You shouldn't trust me," Elena said. "But you should trust them." She gestured to the window. "One hundred and forty three people who need leadership when I'm gone."
"What about Lily?" I asked. "Or one of the others?"
"They're too young," Elena said. "Too loyal to my methods. They need someone who will keep them human."
I looked at Rafael. He looked conflicted.
"Think about it," Elena said. "Stay here for a week. Meet the community. See what we've built. Then decide."
"And if we say no?" I asked.
"Then I'll find someone else. But these people will suffer for it."
She pressed a button. Lily entered and showed us to our quarters. A small apartment overlooking the gardens.
"This is insane," Rafael said once we were alone.
"Completely," I agreed.
"But those people out there do need leadership," Rafael said slowly. "And Elena's right. They need someone better than her."
"You think I should do it?"
"I think you should consider it. We've spent years fighting against Project Genesis. Maybe it's time to fight for something instead."
"For enhanced humans," I said.
"For people," Rafael corrected. "People who happen to be enhanced."
That night, I couldn't sleep. Kept thinking about Elena's offer.
The next morning, Lily took us on a tour. We met dozens of enhanced humans. All with my face. But all unique. Subject L-023 was a doctor. Subject L-056 was an artist. Subject L-089 was a teacher. They had lives. Hopes. Dreams.
"What happens when Elena dies?" I asked L-023.
"We don't know," she admitted. "Without her, we're vulnerable."
"You need leadership," I said.
"We need family," L-023 corrected. "Someone who sees us as more than experiments."
Over the week, Rafael and I talked endlessly.
"If you do this, I'm with you," Rafael said. "Every step."
"It means giving up our old life," I said.
"What old life?" Rafael asked. "We're ex-convicts. We can't get jobs. Can't travel freely. Maybe this is our new life."
On the seventh day, Elena called us to her office.
"Have you decided?" she asked.
I looked at Rafael. He nodded.
"Yes," I said. "I'll do it. But on my terms."
"Which are?"
"No more kidnappings. No more facility raids. We work within the law. We protect our people legally."
"Agreed," Elena said.
"And we open communication with the outside world. No more hiding. We show society that enhanced humans can integrate. Contribute."
"That's risky."
"That's necessary. If we keep hiding, we'll always be seen as threats. We need to be visible."
Elena smiled weakly. "You'll do well. Better than I ever could."
Over the next months, Elena deteriorated quickly. But she spent every moment teaching me. Showing me how Haven worked. Introducing me to key people.
"The hardest part," Elena said one day, "is balancing safety with freedom. These people need protection. But they also need to live."
"I'll figure it out," I said.
"I know you will," Elena said.
She died three weeks later. Peacefully. In her sleep. The community mourned. But they also looked to me.
"What happens now?" Lily asked.
"Now we build something new," I said. "Something better. Together."
Over the next year, we transformed Haven. We opened schools. Started businesses. Created programs to help enhanced humans integrate into society. Some chose to stay at Haven. Others chose to leave. Build lives outside. Both were okay.
"You're doing amazing things," Rafael said one evening.
"We're doing amazing things," I corrected. "This isn't just me."
My phone buzzed. A message from Sophie. "I saw the news about Haven. I'm proud of you. Maybe I'll visit soon?"
I smiled. "I'd like that."
Another message from Walsh. "Saw your interview on 60 Minutes. Good work. Maybe you were right all along."
And one more. Unknown number. My heart sank. Was it another threat?
I opened it. A photo of a young girl. Maybe eight years old. With my face. The message: "Hello Flora. My name is Emma. Subject L-147. I'm the embryo Elena said was lost. But I wasn't lost. I was saved by someone else. Someone who's been watching. Someone who wants to meet you. Soon."
I showed Rafael.
"It never ends," he said.
"No," I agreed. "It doesn't."
Because somewhere out there, someone else knew about Project Genesis. Someone else had enhanced humans. And they wanted to talk. The story wasn't over. It was just beginning.
But this time, I was ready. Because I wasn't just Flora anymore. I was the leader of Haven. The protector of enhanced humans. And I wouldn't let anyone hurt my people again. No matter who came for us next.
