Chapter 140: An End of Era
Melissa’s POV
Thunder moaned in the sky. Above our heads, lightning splintered. The earth trembled. Everything appeared to be collapsing around us.
It was this.
The last conflict.
At the centre of it all stood the dark god, his shadowy form expanding and twisting with each passing moment. Like a storm, his voice roared through the atmosphere.
He snarled, "You came all this way… just to die,"
I tightened my grip on Kane's hand. Even though my heart was beating, I didn't feel scared.
I said to him in a whisper, "We stop this now."
Kane nodded and gave me a ferocious look. "With each other."
The dark god raised his hands. Waves of black energy rushed toward us like a tidal wave. I threw up a shield of light. It trembled against the force, but it held.
Kane leapt forward, his sword glowing. “Now, Melissa!”
I hurled a blaze of unadulterated light. It clashed with the darkness and pushed it back.
“Your light is weak,” the evil god growled. “Your hope is nothing.”
I stepped forward, my voice steady. “Hope is stronger than fear. That’s why you’re afraid of us.”
He yelled and hit the ground. Spikes of gloom shot from the soil. Kane ducked and slashed through them, his motions swift.
I flew into the air, raining light down on him. He shouted as it scorched his skin. But he didn’t fall.
“More,” he hissed. “Give me more.”
I landed beside Kane. “He’s feeding off the gate. We must remove him from it.
Kane gestured toward the enormous gate that was whirling behind the ebony god. It was pouring darkness into the world.
“Then we destroy it,” he added.
We sprinted side by side, evading dark blasts and broken ground. I hurled light orbs to get us out of the way. As the shadows attempted to impede our path, Kane swung his sword at them.
"Go to the left!" I yelled.
"I see it!" An approaching shadow beast was deflected by Kane's spin. It screamed and disappeared.
We arrived at the gate's base. Here, the air was heavy. Breathing was difficult. My light wavered.
I gasped, "He's trying to weaken us."
My shoulder was touched by Kane's hand. "I'm present. We're not by ourselves.
I felt strength from his touch. I put both of my hands on the gate's base and summoned all of my inner light.
"Return!" I yelled.
Just as a huge ray of light exploded from my palms, Kane moved behind me. The gate broke. From within it came a high-pitched scream.
"No!" yelled the evil deity.
His ruby eyes glowed with hatred as he flew toward us.
Kane leapt in front of him and cut him. They fought, blade against shadow, in midair. I continued to concentrate on the gate.
"Melissa!" Kane shouted. "He's on his way to get you!"
"I refuse to stop!" I let out a cry. "This world cannot be allowed to collapse!"
I let out a final cry and threw everything I had into the gate. With a loud crack, it broke apart and fell in on itself. Kane and the dark god flew as a shockwave erupted forth.
The evil god struck the earth with force. Parts of him broke away like ashes as his body flickered.
"No," he moaned. "This isn't possible."
I approached him at a leisurely pace. My entire body ached. I was scarcely able to stand. However, I had to stop this.
"You lose," I said.
"You believe that light prevails?" His teeth were clenched as he said. "You believe this is the end of it?"
With his blade still drawn, Kane hobbled toward me. "It's finished. You're finished.
The dark god's legs failed him as he attempted to stand. His body was vanishing, dissolving into the earth.
"I used to be a god," he said. "I can't be destroyed."
I squinted. "You're starting to fade."
"But I'll be back," he growled. "I always come back."
The wind grew stronger around us as his body dissolved into dust. The sky cleared. It was getting lighter.
However, after that... The gentle, icy, chilling sound of his voice reverberated.
"You might have prevailed, but the darkness never really goes away."
I went cold. Kane's eyes were worried as he looked at me.
"Have you heard it?" I said.
Slowly, he nodded. "Yes."
I looked at where the black deity had disappeared to. The ground was left with a dark scar.
"He is gone," Kane declared.
"But he isn't," I said.
The meadow was gently blown by the breeze. The light came back. However, I sensed something icy deep within. Something is still observing.
I ran my hand across my chest.
His touch left a scar that was still burning.
And I heard him laugh once more in my head.
