Chapter 314

Chapter 314
Freya

As Zoe and Leo disappeared into the crowd, I checked my watch discreetly. Nathan should be making his move soon while the family was distracted by the ceremony.

The ceremony proceeded with traditional Sterling family grandeur, but beneath the festive atmosphere, I felt the tension of our covert operation. I kept one eye on the crowd while tracking Nathan's subtle movements through the estate. He'd seamlessly blended in with the catering staff.

During the formal toasts, my earpiece crackled with Nathan's voice. "I'm in position outside Kai's study. Security rotation in thirty seconds."

I raised my glass higher, drawing attention to myself as I prepared to give a toast.

"May this union bring new beginnings and... revelations for everyone," I announced, my voice carrying across the gathering.

Kai's eyes narrowed at my choice of words, but he couldn't object without appearing ungracious at his daughter's celebration.

Nathan's voice came through again: "I'm in. Starting document search now."

Twenty minutes later, as Zoe and Leo performed the traditional pre-marking ritual, Nathan's voice crackled through the earpiece one final time.

"Freya, I found Kai's private files. Mission accomplished."

Back at Morgan Group later that evening, Nathan spread the stolen documents across the conference table with methodical precision.

"This goes back decades," Nathan explained, pointing to dates on various papers. "Kai Sterling has been orchestrating a long-term campaign against Paxton's branch of the family. But the motivation is far more complex than we initially thought."

I picked up a faded photograph showing a beautiful woman with striking features standing beside Kai, though her gaze was directed toward someone outside the frame. Another photo showed the same woman with Paxton's mother, Serene, their faces close together in an intimate moment that spoke of deep emotional connection.

"This is Vivian," Nathan continued, his voice heavy with revelation. "Zoe's mother. Vivian and Serene—Paxton's mother—were blood sisters. According to these documents, Vivian was deeply in love with Paxton's father."

Lucas frowned, studying the photographs more closely. "So this is about unrequited love?"

Nathan responded, "It's far more complicated. Kai was infatuated with Vivian and pursued her relentlessly. But her heart belonged solely to Paxton's father, while he was devoted entirely to Serene. This created a tragic love triangle that shattered both Kai and Vivian."

I flipped through the documents, finding evidence of systematic sabotage: financial attacks targeting Paxton's business ventures, character assassination attempts spread through carefully placed rumors, strategic business deal interference that had cost Paxton millions. Kai had been pulling strings for years.

The most explosive revelation lay in a sealed envelope.

Inside were detailed strategic documents, personal letters, and DNA test results.

"Nathan," I said quietly, "are you absolutely certain these are authentic?"

Nathan nodded. "Kai kept the originals locked away like treasures—probably the most important documents in his possession."

The DNA test results revealed a devastating truth: Zoe was not Kai's biological daughter. She was the result of Vivian and an unknown man.

Nathan said, "Vivian became pregnant with another man's child but falsely claimed it was Paxton's father's. When Vivian passed away, the lie was eventually exposed. Kai commissioned a private DNA test after Vivian's passing, which confirmed the truth. Kai channeled his heartbreak into love for Zoe, but he also transformed his pain into something far more destructive—a deep resentment toward Paxton and his father, driving him to obsessively pursue the Sterling inheritance."

Even more surprising was what the documents revealed about Kai's true motivation. Rather than using Zoe cynically, he genuinely loved her as his own daughter and was determined to secure what he believed was her rightful place as Sterling Group's heir through any means necessary.

One letter, written in Kai's careful script and dated just after Zoe's birth, read:

[Vivian gave me the greatest gift - Zoe. I failed to win Vivian's love, but I will not fail Zoe. She deserves everything Paxton inherited - leadership, wealth, legacy. My brother stole my happiness. His son will pay that debt, and Zoe will claim what should have always been hers.]

"He's been using his love for Zoe to justify destroying Paxton," I said, disgust evident in my voice. "In his twisted mind, he's not the villain—he's a devoted father securing his daughter's rightful inheritance by eliminating the competition."

Nathan pulled out another set of documents. "And look at this—Kai's been systematically weakening Paxton's position within Sterling Group for years. Every business failure, every partnership that mysteriously fell through, every convenient 'accident' that damaged Paxton's reputation..."

"All carefully orchestrated to make the board lose confidence in Paxton's leadership capabilities," Lucas finished, immediately grasping the long-term strategy. "So when succession decisions arise, they'll naturally turn to Zoe as the stable alternative."

I stood up and remarked, "The question is how to use this information effectively. Kai's actions are motivated by decades of resentment and genuine paternal love, which makes him far more dangerous than a simple corporate raider. He won't back down easily—he believes he's fighting for his daughter's future."

Kai Sterling wasn't just a business rival or power-hungry relative. He was a man driven by unrequited love, personal betrayal, and fierce paternal devotion—a combination that made him both sympathetic and terrifying.

"What's our next move?" Lucas asked, breaking the contemplative silence.

I turned back to face them both, my decision crystallizing. "I want justice, not cruelty. Zoe is a victim in this too, even if she doesn't realize it yet. She deserves to know the truth about her parentage and her father's methods, but she also deserves to learn it in a way that doesn't completely destroy her."

Nathan began gathering the documents. "What about Paxton? Does he deserve to know what his uncle has been doing to sabotage his life?"

I considered this carefully, weighing the potential consequences of each possible action. "Eventually, yes. But first, we need to neutralize Kai's ability to cause more damage. If we move too quickly or clumsily, he might destroy evidence or escalate his sabotage efforts. We could end up making things worse for everyone."

I sat in my office staring at the evidence spread across my conference table. Lucas and Nathan waited for my decision.

"We're not going public with this," I said finally. "I'm going directly to Paxton."

Lucas frowned. "Freya, he's been Kai's puppet for years—"

"Exactly." I gathered the documents into a neat stack. "Which means he's spent years unconsciously noticing that something isn't right. Deep down, he knows. We just need to show him the truth he's been afraid to see."

Nathan nodded slowly. "And if he doesn't believe you?"

"Then we handle Kai ourselves," I said simply.

Lucas leaned back in his chair. "It's risky."

"It's the fastest way." I met his gaze steadily. "Paxton has access to Sterling Group's internal systems, the board's respect, and most importantly—he has the right to confront Kai as family. No external investigation can move as quickly or effectively as Paxton himself."

After a long pause, Lucas nodded.
