Chapter 77 Chapter 77
The wind in the Northern Pass didn’t just blow; it bit, tasting of old snow and the iron from the mountain’s deep veins.
Iris stood at the edge of the Great Hall’s balcony, her fingers numb against the freezing stone. Below her, the courtyard was a hive of silent, lethal activity. The Northern King’s vanguard was preparing to march, their black-furred cloaks making them look like a pack of wolves emerging from a shadow.
"You should be inside, My Lady," a voice rasped from the darkness of the archway.
Iris didn't turn. She knew the cadence of Kieran’s step: heavy, deliberate, the sound of a man who carried the weight of a dying kingdom on his shoulders.
"The Southern King’s scouts were spotted at the Black Ridge," Iris said, her voice steady despite the shiver racking her frame. "If they break the pass, the stronghold falls before the moon is full. Why are we still waiting for a 'sign' from the Elders?"
Kieran stepped into the pale moonlight. He wasn't the polished prince the Southern poets sang of. He was a creature of scars and hard angles, his eyes the color of amber trapped in ice. He stopped a pace behind her, his heat radiating through the freezing air.
"Because the Elders hold the keys to the armory," Kieran replied, his jaw tight. "And they believe that shedding Southern blood on the solstice will curse the harvest for a generation. They would rather see us starve in peace than survive in a war."
"Peace is a luxury for those who don't have a blade at their throat," Iris turned to face him. She saw the exhaustion in the lines of his face, the silent war he was fighting against his own council. "If you won't lead them, Kieran, they will find someone who will. And he won't be as merciful as you."
Kieran’s hand shot out, his fingers brushing the cold silk of her sleeve before his grip tightened on the stone railing. "Mercy is a word for the South, Iris. Here, there is only survival. If I break the Elders' law, I lose the pack's loyalty. If I keep it, I lose the kingdom."
The silence between them was brittle. For months, they had danced around the tension of their alliance, a political marriage designed to bridge the gap between the fading North and the rising South, a union that had brought nothing but suspicion from both sides.
Suddenly, a horn blast echoed through the canyon: three sharp, discordant notes that signaled an incursion.
"They’re here," Kieran whispered.
A rider burst through the main gate, his horse lurching and frothing at the mouth. He didn't stop until he reached the base of the Great Hall. "Alpha! The Southern King... he didn't send scouts! He sent the Silver Guard! They’ve bypassed the Ridge!"
Kieran’s eyes flashed a dark, dangerous gold. The hesitation that had plagued him for weeks vanished in a heartbeat, replaced by the cold clarity of a predator.
"Get to the inner sanctum, Iris," he commanded, his voice dropping into a low, vibrating register. "Take the servants. Lock the iron doors."
"I'm not hiding in a cellar while my home burns," Iris said, reaching for the small, bone-handled dagger she kept hidden at her waist.
Kieran grabbed her shoulders, his grip firm but not bruising. "This isn't a skirmish, Iris. The Silver Guard doesn't take prisoners. They burn what they cannot conquer. If you fall... there is no North left to fight for."
Before she could argue, a second horn sounded, this one closer, coming from the eastern walls. The smell of smoke began to drift upward, acrid and thick.
Kieran pressed his forehead against hers for a fleeting, desperate second, a gesture of intimacy that felt like a goodbye. Then, he turned and vaulted over the railing, dropping twenty feet into the courtyard below with a grace that was more beast than man.
"To the walls!" he roared, his voice carrying over the chaos. "Show them why the North does not bleed!"
Iris watched him go, the amber light of the torches reflecting in her eyes. She wasn't going to the sanctum. She knew the secret passages of the stronghold better than any guard, and she knew where the Elders kept the "Sacred Fire": the black powder that Kieran had been forbidden to use.
If the North was going to fall, it wouldn't be in silence.
