Chapter 146 Kenna's Identity
Chapter 146 Kenna's Identity
Eleanor stood rooted to the spot, her gaze sweeping coldly over the empty hallway. A frigid smile slowly curved her lips.
Fast runner.
But it didn't matter.
Back in her room, Eleanor dialed Pearl's number.
The call connected quickly, Pearl's crisp voice coming through: "Boss, you're calling about Kenna and Conard's investigation results, right? Perfect timing—I just finished compiling everything. I was about to send it to you."
"Give me the highlights now."
Pearl cleared her throat, her tone turning serious. "According to my investigation, Kenna is forty-eight years old, originally from Imperial City. Parts of her history before she applied to work for the Mitchell family were deliberately erased, but I tracked down neighbors and former classmates from her hometown and pieced together her complete background."
"Before she came to the Mitchell family, she worked as a nursing assistant at a private hospital—Rainbow Medical Center."
Eleanor's knuckles turned white around her phone.
Rainbow Medical Center? The same hospital where she was born?
Pearl continued, "She worked there for nearly two years, primarily in the maternity ward. Which means she almost certainly had contact with your mother and you as a newborn."
"The night you went missing, a fire broke out in the maternity ward. According to records at the time, it started in a storage room. The cause was never determined—the investigation just fizzled out. The very next day after the fire, Kenna quit and left Sovereign City. Oddly enough, after an ordinary nursing assistant resigned, her bank account suddenly showed a deposit of five hundred thousand dollars."
"Five hundred thousand was no small sum back then—enough to buy a two-bedroom apartment in Sovereign City outright. The money came from an offshore account. The account holder's information was encrypted behind multiple layers, protected by at least four shell companies to hide the real identity. We had to work extremely hard to find one key detail: that offshore account had financial transactions with Conard."
"Conard also worked at Rainbow Medical Center, though not as a nursing assistant. He was a temporary worker in the hospital's maintenance department, responsible for equipment upkeep and moving supplies. Shortly after you went missing, he also quit. His account received a payment too—three hundred thousand dollars."
"Plus, I checked their travel and rental records. Before they applied to the Mitchell family, they lived together in a rental house in the Sovereign City suburbs for three years, posing as husband and wife. But when they interviewed at the Mitchell family, they pretended to be complete strangers. All these years at the Mitchell family, they've maintained their distance—no one ever suspected any connection between them."
Eleanor leaned back in her chair and slowly closed her eyes.
All the fragments finally came together in that moment to form a complete picture.
The year she went missing, Kenna and Conard both worked at the Mitchell family.
The year Wendy was adopted, Kenna had just arrived at the Mitchell family.
These two people—one was Wendy's biological mother, the other most likely her biological father.
They'd orchestrated a baby swap, planting their own daughter in the Mitchell family as the heiress while throwing the Mitchell family's real heiress into the Brown family to suffer and struggle.
And Noah's leg—they must have crippled him too!
Eleanor slowly opened her eyes, cold light flashing in their depths. "Keep digging. Lock down all the evidence, especially the fire records from Rainbow Medical Center and their bank transactions from that period. Also, I need you to check something else. Pull up any birth records for Kenna and Conard during their time at Rainbow Medical Center. If they had a child, find out where that child is. Get me everything."
"Understood. Boss, are you suspecting... that Wendy is their biological daughter?"
"Not suspecting." Eleanor's tone was flat. "I'm certain. Now I just need proof."
After hanging up, Eleanor walked to the window.
Afternoon sunlight fell across her face, but it couldn't melt the ice in her eyes.
In the garden below, several servants were trimming roses.
She spotted Kenna among them, bent over fertilizing a rosebush, looking no different from any other hardworking, dutiful servant.
What an actress.
She'd been performing for over a decade, so convincingly that everyone believed she was just a loyal old servant.
But it didn't matter. She'd already exposed her true face. And now, Eleanor would set her own plan in motion!
