The End

For the next six months, Rhett spent his days patrolling the Darke Forest. Daniel had approved five other wolves to live in the kingdom to help Rhett protect the borders. He was a pack leader once again.

His nights were spent with Hazel. She had been working with Daniel and her mother everyday and had got her powers more or less under control, and even discovered some new ones. The witch who used to be too weak to fight out of a wet paper sack, could now take on a small army all by herself if she needed to.

Rhett and Daniel were becoming friends, as much as anyone could ever be his friend. It’s hard for a man like him to always have to carry those kinds of responsibilities. Rhett trusted Daniel and he tried to help him shoulder the burdens of the kingdom.

Daniel and his new beta, Jason Logan, were patrolling the woods one summer night when the full moon was at its brightest. It’s the best night to run. Senses were heightened. Rhett could hear every noise, even the little insects crawling on the forest floor.

As they made their way back to the castle after a quiet run, Rhett heard Daniel in his head telling him to come to the castle quickly. It was an emergency. Then Rhett heard a scream in the distance. He and Jason sprinted hard towards the scream and it led them to the castle. As he came out of the woods, he shifted back and quickly dressed before he entered the castle.

He followed the screams until he came to his room where Hazel was leaning over the bed with Rosemary kneeling beside her.

“Alright daddy, wash your hands and get over here,” said Rosemary when she saw Rhett.

Rhett washed his hands in the basin and walked over to the bed. Sigrid put a towel in his arms as Hazel pushed and their son came into the world. Rosemary cleared the baby’s throat then turned him over, slapped his back and then smiled as the baby sucked in his first breath then wailed.

Rhett stood in shock as Rosemary placed him in his arms on the towel. Sigrid moved in front of Rhett then folded the edges of the towel around Embry. “Congratulations Rhett,” said Sigrid as she smiled at him.

Rhett stood there mesmerized by his son. Tears fell down his cheek as he stared into the scrunched up little face that blinked back at him. Then he heard Hazel begin to cry out in pain again. He looked up just in time to see Rosemary catch his daughter in her hands. After she got the baby crying, Rosemary placed her in the waiting arms of Sigrid.

Sigrid walked over to Rhett and told him to sit down in the rocking chair by the bed. When he was seated, he repositioned Embry in his right arm then Sigrid placed Leah in his left. He smiled and rocked gently while his little ones yawned and blinked. They had dark brown hair that stood up in the middle and eyes that looked like the night sky.

Rosemary and Sigrid helped clean up Hazel then got her back to bed. Sigrid walked back to Rhett, then took Embry so that Hazel could nurse him. Rhett stood and walked to the bed, then sat down beside Hazel. He said, “Say hi to your mommy Leah,” as he leaned over towards her.

Then, he looked up to Hazel and smiled. “You did such a good job sweetheart. Look at them.”

“They look like you,” Hazel said as she looked Leah over.

“Devastatingly handsome, you got that right,” said Rhett.

“Yes, that’s what I meant of course,” said Hazel as she laughed.

When the children had been fed, Daniel and Thorin came to see them. Despite his stoney demeanor, Daniel is a fool for a baby. He lifted them up one by one to face him and talked in ridiculously funny baby talk. Then, he brought them close to his face and took in their scents. “I just love the way babies smell,” Daniel said as he rocked them in his arms. It made Rhett grin hard to see him like that. Then, as he was holding Leah he looked down in her eyes then put his hand on her head and chuckled.

“What is it?” asked Rhett.

“You sure you want to know Rhett?” asked Daniel.

"Yeah, of course, what's so funny?" asked Rhett.

“I hope you really like the Hexom family.”
