Mending Fences
The next morning was Saturday, so Rhett slept in. He rolled over and reached his arm over to Hazel’s side then jumped up, forgetting that she was in the guest room. His heart was thumping in his ears as he remembered that she was home safe now. He took a few deep breaths and then got up to use the bathroom.
He flushed then washed his hands. When he shut the water off, he heard retching coming from the guest room. He wiped his hands and then quickly walked down the hall and heard Hazel vomiting into the toilet.
He hurried over and knelt beside her then put his arm around her. She was shaking uncontrollably and panting. “Oh baby what’s wrong?”asked Rhett.
Through chattering teeth she said, “M-m-morning s-sickness.”
He tried pulling her closer but she held up her hand then threw herself forward as she began to vomit again. “Jesus, I’ll call the doctor.”
“N-No.No, I’m f-fine,” she said. “It’s n-normal.”
“Normal? Are you serious?” asked Rhett.
Hazel hit the handle and flushed the toilet then she backed away and then laid her head down on the cold floor. “No baby, don’t lay on the floor.” Rhett tried to pick her up to take her back to bed, but she pushed him away.
“No please, please don’t move me. Dizzy,” she panted before beginning to retch again.
“Ok, Ok, let me go get a blanket.”
Rhett went to the bed and grabbed a pillow and the comforter then came back and wrapped the comforter around her back. He waited until she finished then put the pillow on his lap and guided her down to him. She laid her head on the pillow and tears streamed down her cheeks.
Rhett wiped the hair off her wet forehead. “I’m so sorry sweetheart.”
“It’s not your fault,” Hazel said.
“Well, it kind of is.”
“It’s a good sign Rhett,” said Hazel.
“Really? It doesn’t look very good to me.”
Hazel chuckled then tried to catch her breath.
Rhett asked, “Isn’t there anything we can do for it?”
“Not really, it will go away in a few months,” she answered.
“Months, holy shit baby. You can’t do this everyday for months,” he said.
“I’ll be fine. The baby will be fine. It just sucks,” said Hazel.
He continued to rake his fingers through her hair. “Since I got you here and you can’t run away from me. I want you to know I love you. I hate seeing you like this and I hate what’s happening between us. I just want to get back to the good stuff Hazel.”
“Who was that woman Rhett?”
“She’s no one baby. I barely even know her. I never dated women from my pack. Never. She’s just someone my mom wanted to set me up with.”
“Why didn’t you tell your mum about me?” asked Hazel.
“Because I was stupid. I knew she wouldn’t accept you because you’re not one of us. I thought once we had a baby, she’d get used to the idea. I barely even speak to my mother Hazel. What she thinks doesn’t make a difference to me. I just didn’t want to hear her bitch at me everyday or start attacking you.”
Rhett’s words hurt Hazel. She didn’t want Rhett’s mother to hate her. She started to cry harder.
“Don’t cry baby. She doesn’t matter to me. She was a terrible fucking mother. Only the three of us matter. I’m sorry for the way I’ve been acting, for pushing you the way I have been. For spanking you like that.”
“I liked that part,” Hazel said as she closed her eyes and started to drift off.
“Do you think I can move you know tiger?” asked Rhett.
“Mm-huh. Take me to our bed Rhett,” said Hazel.
“You got it,” he said as he got to his knees then lifted her in his arms.
He carried her out into the hall then back to their bed. He knelt down and laid her in bed then pulled the covers up to her chin and kissed her cheek. Then he got the waste basket from the bathroom and put it beside her.
“Can you hold me for a while?” she asked.
“I’d like that a whole lot Hazel.” Then Rhett crawled in the other side of bed and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close to his chest.
“You know I went back and got that costume. I got one of each. I knew you were gonna be pregnant, I just knew it,” Rhett said.
“Why’d you get so many?”
“Just in case we don’t have a boy. The puppy was for a boy,” he said.
“What if we have a boy and a girl?” she asked.
Rhett smiled, “That’d be great.”
“You won’t think that when you’re changing 2 poopy diapers at 2 in the morning.”
He laughed, “I’ll love it Hazel. I’ve really missed you, you know?” said Rhett.
“I missed you too. I love you Rhett. I really love you. I’m sorry for running away. If I'd known I was expecting, I wouldn’t have ran. I swear.”
Something had been nagging at Rhett. He was the jealous type so it had been bothering him. “What made you go to the Hexom’s territory?”
“Oh I didn’t know that I had until Teddy Mason introduced himself. We’re family Rhett.”
“You’re related to the Hexom’s? How?” he asked.
“My cousin married Stella's nephew and my guardian is Teddy’s father.”
“I gotta say Hazel, your guardians fucking terrible at his job.”
She laughed. “So I hear. You know. I’m very sorry for you about your parents. My mother wasn’t very warm but she meant well. My father is wonderful, I wish you could meet him. I promise I’ll be a good mother to our children.”
“I know you will Hazel. I have no doubts about that. So what are we gonna name this little guy?”
“Oh, there's a lot of time for that I think,” she said. Then she lightly started to run her fingers through Rhett’s chest hair. Goosebumps ran up his arm. It’s been nearly a week since his wife has voluntarily touched him. It felt good.
He leaned his head down so his lips were touching her forehead. He knew it was wrong, she was just sick a little while ago, but he wanted more of her touch. He began softly running his fingers through her hair and then down her cheek. She moaned a little. “Hazel, do you think we could do something later? If you're feeling better, I mean.”
She said, “Mm-huh.” then she fell asleep on his chest. He smiled thinking about what awaited him later. Once he was sure she wouldn’t wake, he got out of bed and went into the garage to get his tools. He started putting up all the doors again. He knew it had been ridiculous and he was really sorry for it now. When he was finished, he decided that his wife needed a present to celebrate her pregnancy, so he went online and to get her a necklace to match those earrings and ring then he saw something else that caught his attention. There was a diamond tiara. It was bold and beautiful, like Hazel. He removed the necklace from the cart and bought his princess a tiara.
