Chapter 68 Final day

Chapter 68 Final day
The daylight of our final day bled away too fast.

Inside the cabin, the tension was like a physical weight pressing against my chest. Vesper had managed to force himself into a sitting position on a crate near the fire, his face pale and tight with agony. Sylvia was asleep, her head resting in Aleera's lap.

I stood by the grimy window, watching the shadows lengthen across the pine trees. The sky was bruising into a deep, violently purple twilight—the herald of the Onyx Moon.

A low, guttural howl shattered the silence of the forest.
It was a wolf. And it was terrifyingly close.

Julian scrambled to the window, peering through the cracked glass. "They're here. But... it's just one guy. He's walking right up to the ward line."

Vesper grunted, leaning heavily against the stone mantle. "A shifter. I can smell him from here. Rogue."

I moved to the window, peering over Julian’s shoulder. The trees parted at the edge of the clearing. A figure stepped out of the shadows, bathed in the sickly twilight. He was tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a smirk that made my blood turn to ice.

It was Ryder.

The guy who had made my first weeks at the University a living hell.

"What the hell is he doing here?" I whispered. “How did he even know where we were?”

Ryder stopped exactly three inches from the invisible barrier Estave had erected. His eyes were glowing yellow, and his fingernails had elongated into dark, sharp claws.

"Hey there, Sylvie!" Ryder shouted, his voice echoing unnaturally. "Cozy little setup you've got here! Tell Vesper he looks like crap!"

Vesper let out a low, vibrating growl. "Ryder. What are you doing here?”

Ryder laughed. "Ripping up a few co-eds was child's play. It was the perfect way to force your Senator daddy to drug his own son. We had to neutralize you."

My stomach plummeted when I finally understood what he said. The murders, the drugs, the hostility—it had all been a coordinated attack to ruin Vesper. But… why?

Ryder reached into the thick brush behind him and dragged someone out by the hair.

"Myla!" I screamed, slamming my good hand against the windowpane.

Aleera held my arm. “Why are you concerned about her? She did you dirty.”

“That doesn’t mean I’d let him kill her. What if… what if she was forced to do what she did?”

Even though she had almost ruined my life with her desperate hunger for fame, I couldn’t bare standing back and let her get hurt.

My attention snapped back outside. She was bruised, her clothes torn, her face streaked with dirt and tears. But as Ryder yanked her to her feet, pressing one of his elongated claws against her throat, I saw something else in her eyes. It wasn't just terror. It was cold fury.

"The Goddess wants her vessel, Sylvania!" Ryder shouted. "Drop the wards, or your roommate's throat gets ripped out right here on the lawn!"

"No!" I panicked, turning to Estava. "We have to let her in!"

"If I drop the wards, the whole army comes through," Estava warned grimly.

"Don't do it, Syl!" Myla screamed, her voice cracking. "He's a freak!"

"Shut up, human," Ryder snarled.

But Myla wasn't a helpless damsel. With a sudden, vicious twist, she drove her hand backward. Sunlight caught the glint of polished silver metal.

She buried the silver blade deep into Ryder’s thigh.
Ryder threw his head back and roared. Silver burned them like acid. His grip on her throat broke instantly.

"Myla, run!" I screamed.

I didn't wait. I reached deep into my gut, bypassing the hot rage and finding that cold, thick control from my training. I threw my hand toward the door. The violet energy surged, wrapping around the heavy wooden latch and ripping the door open.

Myla sprinted toward the porch. Ryder lunged after her, his jaws snapping.

I pushed my power outward, creating a violet shield right behind Myla's heels, perfectly sealing the gap in the ward. Ryder slammed face-first into the magical barrier, his nose breaking with a sickening crunch as Myla dove across the threshold and crashed onto the cabin floor. Julian slammed the door shut, throwing the deadbolt.

"I've got you," I choked out, dropping to my knees beside Myla, hugging her tight.

"He's a monster," she sobbed into my shoulder. "They're all monsters."

Outside, Ryder staggered backward, blood pouring from his ruined face. He looked up at the sky, which had turned a pitch, unnatural black.

The Onyx Moon was at its zenith.

"Have it your way!" Ryder howled at the cabin. "Tear it down! Bring the Queen her crown!"

The air pressure in the cabin dropped.

"Brace!" Estava screamed.

A massive BOOM shook the walls. The front window exploded inward. A mutated werewolf was hurled through the glass like a cannonball, bypassing the outer ward. It crashed into the center of the room, shattering the wooden table.

The beast scrambled to its feet, its yellow eyes locking instantly on Sylvia and Myla in the corner. Aleera threw her frail body over Lily’s with a feral scream.
Julian lunged forward, placing himself between the monster and the girls. He swung a rusted length of rebar like a baseball bat, connecting solidly with the beast’s jaw. The wolf’s head snapped to the side, but its massive shoulder slammed into Julian’s chest, throwing him backward against the log wall.

Aleera didn't stay in the corner. She grabbed a thick, burning log straight from the dying hearth and drove the burning end directly into the side of the werewolf’s face. The beast howled in agony, swatting blindly at the flames.

Vesper crossed the room with terrifying speed. He grabbed the thick fur at the back of the beast's neck and drove his knee with bone-shattering force into the base of its spine. The crack echoed like a gunshot. The wolf collapsed, dead.

"The window is breached!" Estava shouted over the sudden silence.

I didn't hesitate. I stepped over the shattered glass, my eyes locked on the howling pack waiting just beyond the treeline. I raised my good hand. I didn't reach for the fire; I reached for the ice. Thick, glowing amethyst resin poured from my fingertips, catching the edges of the jagged frame and weaving itself into a solid, translucent barrier.

I pushed until the entire gap was sealed shut by a wall of hardened magical amber. The physical strain was immense. As the barrier locked into place, my knees buckled. And in that moment of physical exhaustion, my mental iron wall cracked.

MINE.

The voice detonated inside my brain like a nuclear bomb. I screamed, collapsing onto the floorboards. The pain was blinding as a darkconsciousness flooded into the fragile cup of my mind.

"Sylvania!" Vesper dropped to his knees, grabbing my face.

I couldn't see him. My vision was drowned in violet light. My spine snapped rigid, arching off the floor.

“Let me in!” She roared, tearing through my memories, crushing my sense of self. I felt my hands ball into fists that weren't mine. I felt my lips twist into a cruel sneer.

"She's taking her!" Estava shrieked. "The merge is happening!"

Vesper’s thumbs pressed hard into my cheeks. I could feel his Alpha energy burning against my skin, desperately trying to anchor me, but he was a man holding onto a rope in a hurricane. I was slipping away. The violet light was consuming everything. Sylvania was fading into the dark.

I opened my mouth to speak, my vocal cords hijacked by the Goddess. I was about to drop the wards. I was about to order Vesper's death.

But the words that ripped from my throat weren't a triumphant command. They were a jagged, horrifying scream of sheer agony.

Through the forced psychic link, the violet fire in my mind parted for a fraction of a second. I didn't see Hera on a dark throne. I saw Hera on her knees, ethereal wrists bound by jagged, black magical chains.

And I saw the man holding the leash.

The shock of the vision gave me a microsecond of control. I gasped, my purple-glowing eyes snapping toward the amber-sealed window.

Through the magical glass, bathed in the violet moonlight, a man in an immaculate, dark wool overcoat was walking slowly onto the porch. His silver hair gleamed. In his left hand, he held a jagged, black metallic object that pulsed with the exact same dark frequency that was currently tearing my brain apart.

It was then I realized that it wasn't Hera orchestrating this apocalypse. She was a weapon being aimed at my head.

"Sylvania, fight her!" Vesper roared.

"She's not... she's not doing this..." I choked out, blood dripping from my nose. I grabbed the crumbling pieces of my iron wall, and collapsed against Vesper’s chest, gasping for air, the violet glow instantly fading from my eyes.

The polite tap, tap, tap of a walking cane on the porch boards echoed through the silence of the cabin.

"Impressive," a cultured, smooth voice called out from the other side of the door. It sounded exactly like my father, only older, colder, and infinitely more dangerous. "Thomas always said you were weak, Sylvania. But to fight off a forced possession during an Onyx eclipse? You are a much better vessel than I anticipated."

Vesper froze, his grip on my waist tightening. "That voice..."

"Hello, Vesper. Hello, Estava," the man on the porch said pleasantly. "It’s cold out here. Won't you invite your Uncle Lucian inside? It's time for the Seratti bloodline to claim the Obsidian Throne."
