Chapter 59 Just a Piece of Furniture
The three of them stepped into the lounge reserved for business negotiations, muted lighting and thick carpeting muffling the noise from the main hall.
Alexander and Andrew wasted no time. They had already covered the groundwork in earlier meetings; tonight was about locking in the shape of their future cooperation.
Caroline sat quietly just behind Alexander's right side, her posture attentive and her gaze steady on the two men. She knew little about shipping or the complexities of maritime trade, but her role tonight was more than that of Alexander's wife. She was also his assistant, which meant she had to be alert, ready to catch anything that might matter later.
Whether these discussions would ever directly involve her was uncertain, but she refused to drift. She made small, unobtrusive contributions—folding Alexander's suit jacket neatly when he took it off, topping up the steaming tea in his cup or Andrew's when she noticed it was low—without ever breaking the rhythm of their exchange.
The atmosphere was calm, professional, and quietly efficient... until Celeste began to fidget.
"Mr. Ford," she said suddenly, seizing on a pause. "You mentioned the risks of winter operations on certain sea routes earlier. I've read similar analyses in industry reports."
Her voice carried a note of eagerness as she leaned forward. "I think that by using more advanced icebreaker fleets and implementing dynamic route-planning systems, delays could be reduced by at least fifteen percent. Alex, didn't you once consider bringing in that foreign tech company?"
Alexander's eyes flicked to her, his expression flat. He gave a single, brief nod but did not elaborate. It was clear he had no interest in pursuing the tangent she had introduced—not here, not now.
Andrew lifted his glass of whiskey, letting the amber liquid catch the light. His gaze lingered on Celeste, the corner of his mouth curling in an unreadable way.
"You do have a wide range of interests, and you pay attention to industry trends," he said, his tone polite but edged. Then, with a subtle shift, "However... the variables in real-world operations are far more complex than any report can capture. Mr. Hamilton, would you agree?"
It was a clean handoff, the conversation redirected back to Alexander, leaving Celeste's point hanging in the air.
Celeste's smile stiffened, but she rallied quickly. "You're right, Mr. Ford. I didn't consider all the factors. I just think any opportunity to improve efficiency and reduce risk is worth discussing."
Her gaze slid toward Caroline, who had remained silent, and her voice sharpened with a faint, deliberate sneer. "Unlike some people, who probably can't follow a single thing in a professional discussion like this... just sitting there like a piece of furniture."
The jab was unmistakable.
The air in the lounge tightened. Alexander's brow drew together, his gaze on Celeste now openly disapproving. Andrew's smile remained, but it had lost warmth.
Caroline felt her stomach knot. Being singled out like that was risky. In a setting like this, she couldn't risk speaking out of turn. One wrong move could sour Andrew's mood.
"Celeste," Andrew said suddenly, his voice smooth but carrying weight. "Your ideas are energetic, but business partnerships are like chess—you have to see the whole board before making a move. What you've suggested has some merit, but it doesn't align precisely with the quick-to-implement goals Mr. Hamilton and I are pursuing."
He paused, his gaze drifting—seemingly by chance—toward Caroline. Then he smiled, turning fully to her. "Mrs. Hamilton, you may not be familiar with the technical details of shipping, but from an outsider's perspective, do you have any instinctive thoughts on what we've been discussing? Sometimes fresh eyes can break through industry habits."
The question landed like a lifeline, breaking the tension cleanly. All eyes swung toward her.
Alexander looked at Andrew with a flicker of surprise, then shifted his focus to Caroline, his expression deepening.
Celeste's hands clenched in her lap. Andrew was asking the mute woman? The insult was implicit.
Caroline froze for a moment, then realized Andrew was giving her a way out. Gratitude softened her features, and she offered him a small smile. But what could she possibly say?
Everyone was waiting.
She glanced toward Alexander. He understood instantly, sliding his phone toward her.
She hesitated, then something clicked—her own professional background offered a spark of connection. Ideas began to form, and her fingers moved quickly over the screen. Across from her, Celeste's expression shifted from smug expectation to a flicker of unease.
Caroline couldn't actually know... could she?
Within moments, Caroline handed the phone to Andrew.
[Apologies—I don't know much about shipping. But from a cooperation standpoint, perhaps instead of aiming for complete integration, you could build a core-alliance structure?]
Andrew's eyes scanned the words. His expression sharpened, then lit with recognition.
"A joint operations center... with shared decision-making? Brilliant! Mrs. Hamilton, your outsider's instinct just cut straight to the heart of what has been holding us back."
He turned to Alexander, passing him the phone, his praise without reservation. "Mr. Hamilton, her idea is genuinely inspiring."
Alexander read the text, and for a moment something like shock crossed his face. He looked at Caroline with a gaze that was suddenly more complex.
He had never imagined that the woman he had long dismissed as foolish and malicious could, in this setting, deliver such a precise, game-changing insight.
"This is... a very elegant solution," he said slowly. "Mr. Ford, if you approve, could we move to finalize the partnership quickly?"
"Absolutely," Andrew replied, his laugh rich and satisfied. "Mr. Hamilton, it seems tonight's meeting has exceeded both our expectations. Tomorrow morning at nine, bring your core team and legal counsel to my office in Grandhaven. If we can settle the details fast, I'd like us to sign the contract tomorrow."
Tomorrow? The speed was almost dizzying.
Alexander rose, extending his hand with deliberate gravity. "Thank you for your trust, Mr. Ford. I'll be there at nine sharp."
Andrew inclined his head, his eyes sliding toward Caroline, his tone shifting between playful and serious. "Mrs. Hamilton, if this deal goes through, you'll deserve the first credit. Looks like I owe you more than my life now... I owe you a serious favor."
