Chapter 272 You Should Just Go Die
The smile on Alexander's lips vanished instantly.
He suddenly raised his hand and slapped Edith hard across her face—the half that hadn't been operated on yet.
Edith's head snapped to the side. She froze for a second, then covered her face and let out a piercing scream.
"Ah, Alexander, you're not even human! You'll get what's coming to you."
Alexander's eyes turned red, his voice thick with suppressed rage. "How dare you even compare yourself to her?"
He moved closer, biting out each word. "You're not even worthy to stand next to her."
Edith suddenly burst into laughter, laughing out of control. "Alexander, stop fooling yourself. Even if you torture me to death, Caroline won't come back to life."
He paused, fixing his gaze on Edith. "Edith, you don't even deserve to die."
All the color drained from Edith's face.
She understood.
This wasn't a threat to kill her. It was a promise to make her suffer while she was still alive.
"Kill me," Edith screamed hoarsely. "Alexander, kill me."
Alexander only sneered. He turned and walked to the window, his back to her.
"Let your wounds heal. That face of yours must recover to a level I'm satisfied with."
"Dream on," Edith shrieked back. "You think threatening me like this will make me submit? Alexander, you're too naive."
Alexander let out a low laugh, completely devoid of warmth.
"I'm naive. But Edith, you're even more naive than me."
He turned around, his gaze falling directly on her. "You clearly saw through Linus's scheme, yet you still chose to side with him. From that day on, you put yourself against everyone."
Alexander's voice was calm to the point of cruelty. "You and I are both sinking with our eyes wide open. Neither of us should pretend to be more noble."
The madness on Edith's face seemed to freeze, her expression stuck in place.
Alexander said no more, simply raising his hand toward the door.
The doctor and bodyguards immediately entered, standing before him.
"Sir, your orders."
"If she won't cooperate, teach her how to cooperate," Alexander said flatly. "She wants to ruin that face? Find a way to make sure she can't move at all."
He added, his tone still level. "But remember, no matter what, don't cause her permanent disability."
The doctor and bodyguards exchanged glances, both understanding where the boundary lay.
Before long, the bodyguards brought in several thin leather straps, replacing the original restraints. The straps bound Edith firmly to the bed, even securing her slender neck.
The edges of these straps were rough and hard. If she struggled, the straps would scrape her skin open and make her bleed. The material was mixed with tiny fibers that would dig into the flesh.
It wouldn't kill her, but it was enough to break her down.
More importantly, no matter how much Edith struggled, she couldn't use these restraints to strangle herself. The pain would force her to stop again and again, dragging her back onto the same track each time.
Edith screamed in collapse, roaring at Alexander, "You'll go to hell."
Alexander turned to look at her, his expression flat. "I never expected to go to heaven. If you want to struggle, go ahead. Whatever you do to yourself, that's your own choice."
Edith's eyes were bloodshot, staring at him intently, still trying to lift herself up.
The moment she applied any force, tearing pain shot through her wrists, ankles, and neck. Blood seeped out along the edges of the straps.
Edith gasped and finally could only lie back down helplessly.
Alexander turned to leave.
Edith stared at his back, shouting hoarsely, "Stop lying to yourself, Alexander. You want her back more than anyone. But too bad—even if there really was a way to bring the dead back in this world, you'd never get your Caroline back."
Alexander's steps paused. He tilted his head slightly but didn't look back at her.
He only left one sentence. "She's so out of line. Teach her a lesson."
"Yes, sir."
Alexander walked away.
Soon, Edith's screams echoed out from the hospital room.
Alexander covered his ears and walked faster, trying to drown out the noise.
He drove alone, circling aimlessly through the streets of Grandhaven.
He was the head of the Hamilton family, a man whose word alone could change the city’s future.. But as the neon lights and the wealth of the city flashed past past his car window , Alexander realized he had nowhere to go.
He could only mechanically press the gas pedal and adjust his direction, as if waiting for some signal to tell him which road to take.
He didn't know how long he'd been driving until he found himself in front of Caroline’s old clinic.
After Caroline's death, Lina had been managing the place. Even when Caroline was alive, Alexander had rarely visited.. The clearest memory he had was when he brought Celeste to see Caroline for a "consultation."
That visit wasn't for help—it was to humiliate her.
Alexander got out of the car and walked to the clinic looking completely drained.
He looked up at the sign. There was a small line of text under the clinic’s name.
He squinted to read it. It said, 'If the storm outside is too harsh, treat this place as a temporary shelter.'
Alexander's throat tightened, his eyes suddenly stinging. He lowered his head.
Caroline had given so many people a place to catch their breath.
But where was her own sense of security?
Alexander stood there quietly for a long time.
The sky gradually darkened. Lina saw off the last visitor before noticing the person standing at the bottom of the steps.
She paused, then let out a soft snort.
"What are you doing here? Reminiscing about your dead wife?"
Alexander snapped out of it and looked up. Lina was standing there with her arms crossed, looking at him with pure disgust.
"Long time no see, Mr. Hamilton. I didn't expect you'd turn yourself into such a mess."
Lina was actually quite surprised when she first saw him.
She'd heard some rumors about Alexander recently. Some said his mental state was out of control, that for a while he'd even worn women's clothing, dressing himself up as a woman and appearing in publicPeople had openly mocked him at a party.
Later, he killed someone at that party. Someone who had once humiliated Caroline.
As for who died, Lina didn't care. Nor did she believe Alexander was avenging Caroline.
If Alexander truly felt guilty, he'd just kill himself.
