Chapter 40 Forty

Chapter 40 Forty
Mira stared at him like she couldn’t understand how one person could stand there so calm after something like that.

Her breath was shaking.

“How could you do that?” she asked again, her voice softer this time. She was shaking. Still trying to process what she’d just seen.

Salvatore didn’t answer immediately.

He just stood there looking at her calmly and completely unbothered with a blood stain on his face.

For a second, Mira hated herself, for a second  she’d forgotten. Forgotten who he was. What he was capable of.

“You’re alive,” he said in a low voice. “That’s all that matters.”

Mira let out a disbelieving laugh. A broken one.

“That’s not the point!” Her voice cracked as she pointed at the floor where the guy had been lying before.

“You killed someone!” The words echoed through the room.” In cold blood. How could you!”

“I fucking saved your life!” Salvatore shot back.

The sudden anger in his voice made her flinch.

“If I hadn’t shown up when I did, you’d be dead right now.”

Mira stared at him. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Couldn’t believe he was standing there trying to justify it. “You shot him…” Her voice wavered. “You shot him more than once.”

She swallowed hard.

“You could’ve stopped at one. You could’ve called the police. You could’ve done anything else.”

Salvatore’s expression darkened.

“Anything else?” His laugh was short and humorless.” The bastard had a knife to your throat, Mira.”

“And you killed him!”

“Yes.” He yelled his voice echoing loudly and making her body shiver.

Mira actually took a step back. The certainty in his voice scared her more than the gun had.

Salvatore saw it.

His jaw tightened. “You’re standing here judging me because I made sure you’re still breathing?”

His eyes locked onto hers. “Fine.”He took a step forward. “I killed him.”

Another step. “ And if I were to go back in time and walk into this  room again and saw him with his hands on you…” His voice dropped. “I’d do it again.”

The room went silent. Mira felt her stomach twist.

There was something deeply wrong with him.

The terrifying part?

He knew it. And he didn’t care.

“And, I’m not sorry,” Salvatore said coldly. “Not even a little.”

His gaze hardened.

“The only thing that bastard should be grateful for is that I ended it quickly.”

She pushed herself up from the floor, legs unsteady beneath her. “ I’m calling the police.”

Her hand went for her phone again. She didn’t even see him move then the next thing he snatched her phone from her hand.

Mira froze. Her eyes snapped to his.

Salvatore held the phone loosely, like it meant nothing. He leaned slightly to the side, holding her phone up between two fingers after taking it.

“You want to call the cops,” he said calmly.”Be my guest.”

Mira froze.

Then he added, voice lower now—colder, his eyes on her. “ But just so you know…” He stepped closer… so close that she could feel his breath. “ This makes you my fucking accomplice.”

Mira’s throat tightened. She couldn't believe her ears

“What?”

Salvatore’s gaze held hers. “You heard me, darling,” he said quietly, “I killed for you. So this is all on you. If I’m a murderer then it’s your fault!”

. Mira took a small step back without realizing it.

“That’s insane,” she whispered.” You’re insane.”

“Maybe.” He walked close to her and held her hand. His  grip tightened slightly on her “You made me a murderer. If you’re ready to admit that then ..” he let go of her hands and placed the phone in her hands

“Call the police!” He said with a smirk on his lips watching her  “Tell them everything.”

Mira looked down at the phone then back at him.
Then down again. Her thumb hovered over the screen.

But she didn’t move. She couldn’t because suddenly she didn’t know what she was supposed to say. What was she going to tell the police without blowing her cover?

That a man broke into the house and tried to kill her? That she was snooping around?  That Salvatore saved her? That he’d then shot the man?

That she had stood there and watched?

The thoughts tangled together inside her head.

Her breathing quickened. The phone remained in her hand.

Seconds passed. Then more.

The room became unbearably quiet.

Salvatore simply stood there watching… waiting. A full minute slipped by. Mira never made the call.

A sharp knock came breaking the uncomfortable silence. The door opened and  Victor stepped inside. His eyes moved between them before settling on Salvatore. The tension in the room was impossible to miss.

Salvatore looked away from Mira first. His face became unreadable again. Like none of this had affected him. “Get her to her room.”

Victor immediately nodded. “ Yes, boss.”

Mira looked up.

Salvatore was already walking away. He passed her without another word. Without another glance. The sound of his footsteps echoed through the room.

Then he was gone.
Leaving her standing there. Still shaking.
