Chapter 11 (A Trip To Mother-In-Law)

Chapter 11 (A Trip To Mother-In-Law)
Callie felt invisible. That's how Grayson made her feel.

Who on earth works on the day of their wedding? Grayson Wolfe, that's who.

She understood that it was a fake marriage, but still, she expected Grayson to honour their agreement and simply show up for his own wedding.

It wasn't as if he would be doing her a favour if he showed up; he was the one who wanted the wedding in the first place, and as adults, they had already stated what each wanted to benefit from the contract marriage.

He had no right to treat her as if she were some love-struck idiot begging for his time, attention, and money.

She was here for business, and he knew it. She had some attitude fixing to do on him because she wasn't about to allow some jerk to treat her like a helpless housewife.

"Ma'am, this way, please," Joe met Callie the moment she was stepping out of Grayson's office, raising his hand toward the stairs by the corner of the living room.

Callie paused, calling her senses back to the present. The butler is here to take her to her room, like the boss had instructed.

"Okay," She said to the man and nodded at Melinda, who now stood by the side, waiting to see if she would be allowed to go with her friend this time.

Together, they climbed up the staircase, sharing glances as they how polished even the walls looked; money was silently screaming from every nook and cranny.

They felt out of place, intimidated. The house was mocking their status.

They paused in front of a white door after climbing two staircases.

"This is your room, Ma'am. There's a phone on top of the table, ring me any time and I'll be at your service," The butler bowed and walked away.

"Alright..." Callie murmured, staring at his retreating figure.

She faced the door, staring at it for a few seconds before placing her hand on the handle.

"Open it," Melinda whispered behind her.

Callie took a deep breath and slowly pushed the door open.

"Wow..." She muttered as she stepped into the spacious, luxurious room.

"Yeah... wow," Melinda followed behind her, gazing at the while place.

Callie couldn't believe her eyes; the room was twice the size of her and Roxy's apartment. Tall mirrors, large bed, smooth, tiled floor with a velvety white mat at the side of the bed, large arched windows.

It almost felt like she was some celebrity princess.

Biting her lower lip, she shook her head and went over to the large, arched window that overlooked the large golf field she had seen from Grayson's living room.

'Just how rich was this man?' She pondered.

"I mean, look at the brighter side, you have a steady job, steady income, and fucking majestic room! Look at this large bed," Melinda threw herself on top of the neatly made bed.

Callie sighed, going over and lowering herself onto the bed. "Yeah... unfortunately, I'm not getting myself attached to any of this. It's just a year and I'll be gone." She muttered.

"None of this belongs to me, none of it is real," Callie said, frowning.

Melinda sat up on the bed, "You know what I think?" She asked her friend.

Callie raised a brow at her, "What?"

"I think you're going to be happy in the end. I have that feeling," Melinda replied.

Callie chuckled, "Of course, I'll be happy. I get to cover my mother's surgery and become debt-free. What could make me happier than that?" She questioned, standing up.

Melinda smiled, "We'll see." She murmured.

"Help me get out of this," She said, standing in front of her tall mirror and trying to unhook the dress behind her.

"I've got it," Callie said and git to her feet, walking over to Callie to help her off her simple wedding gown.

Melinda sighed as she unzipped the dress, "I'm the wrong person for this job. It's supposed to be your husband undressing you, not your lame friend," she said.

Callie laughed, "That's a hard scene to imagine... Grayson... undressing me? That's awkward as hell." She replied, shaking her head.

Melinda smirked, "We'll see." She murmured.

"Shit," Callie gasped.

"What?" Melinda asked, worried.

"I never got to go back home for my clothes. I guess I'm going to call Roxy -"

"Chill, Mrs. Wolfe. I'm sure your husband might have handled everything," she held Callie's hand and led her toward the walk-in closet.

"I knew it! Look at all those fancy clothes hanging around. Let's pick one for you," Melinda was already scanning through the lavish clothes.

Callie stood by the door, staring at the floor-to-ceiling wardrobe, shoes, bags, dresses, pants, shirts, everything had its section.

She would have wondered why Grayson bothered so much with all this, but she knew he had to make everything look authentic, to convince his mother.

She saw Melinda checking out severely beautiful dresses, but she wasn't about to wear them. She quietly moved to the pants section and took a black, loose, high-waisted jeans, then she grabbed a white shirt, quickly fixing it while Melinda still rummaged through the dresses.

"I'm done," Melinda announced, holding up a pink, sexy gown.

However, her face fell the moment she saw Callie standing at the entrance, all dressed and ready to leave.

"I mean, don't get me wrong. You look simply and classy, but, I thought... maybe you would want to dress to impress your husband and your mother-in-law," Melinda suggested.

Callus smiled, "Thanks for your thoughtfulness, but I think I'm good. Come on, let's go, Mr. Perfect must be waiting already."She said and left the room, Melinda trailing behind her.

As she opened the door, she gasped in shock as she saw Joe quietly standing in front of the door.

"I'm sorry if my presence startled you, Ma'am. But your husband is waiting downstairs," Joe informed politely.

Callie nodded, catching her breath, "Thank you, Joe. I'm heading down now." She said.

The butler bowed and left, his footsteps as stealthy as his looks.

"What a weird man," Melinda said behind Callie.

"Don't say that," Callie sighed and held Melinda's hand, leading her downstairs.

Outside, Callie's eyes immediately fell on the man standing by the side of the black, sleek car looking all handsome.

Broad shoulders, striking blue eyes, tanned skin, chiselled jaws, muscles sensually peeking through a white shirt... it was no other than her jerk of a husband.

"Ohh, he's hot," Melinda whispered beside Callie as they walked toward Grayson.

Callie nudged Melinda's stomach, "Be quiet, he's just a douche." She whispered.

"Who did you bring to my house?" Grayson questioned as he saw Callie walking over with some other girl, a frown creasing his brows.

Callie set her face into a hard frown, holding Melinda's hand, "She's Melinda, my best friend -"

"You told her?" He asked, "That's a breach of contract, Callie," he stated, not sparing a glance at Melinda for once.

Callie was about to respond but Melinda beat her to it.

"Alright, Mr. Rich and handsome, listen up," Melinda stepped forward, folding her arms as she stared at Grayson's face.

"Yes, she told me everything. She told me how you pleaded so desperately with her to marry you for a year. She told me how you promised many offers, financially and otherwise. So, yes, I do know about this fake marriage," Melinda said, smirking.

"So, if you want to get the best out of your contract, I suggest you treat her with respect, never hurt her, and fix your upsetting attitude, or else..." She pointed her finger at his face, "I'm telling the media something that would fetch them a fortune for a lifetime. Are we clear, Mr. Grayson?" Melinda asked sternly, her face frowning.

Grayson gritted his teeth, glancing at Callie's proud face behind Melinda. He knew better than to argue with them, he had more to lose than they did.

He still didn't know the reason why Callie agreed to marry a stranger for some amount of money, but he sure knew why he had agreed to marry a nobody like herself; he wasn't about to let her fellow nobody destroy his plans because she thinks she's the sunshine's protector.

"I understand," He said and walked past her, placing his hand on Callie's lower back, "If you'd excuse us, I need to take my wife to see my mother. Okani will take you home." He said and gently led Callie toward the car.

"Bye, love. Call me," Melinda waved at Callie as Grayson opened the car door for her to enter.

"You don't have to," She muttered as she entered the car, closing the door by herself.

Grayson clenched his jaws and got through the other side to sit by her side.

An awkward silence reigned inside the car as the driver steered the car out of Grayson's compound.

Callie was mute even though she had a lot of things to say. She turned her eyes to the window, maybe she would speak to him when they were truly alone. Melinda had said most of her thoughts, but she still needed to let her rich husband know that she wasn't some pushover.

Grayson suddenly cleared his throat, "So, you're blackmailing me?" He asked in an intimidating tone.
