Chapter 188
Chapter 188
Valencia’s POV
I floated in darkness. Not the darkness of closing your eyes. Not the darkness of a room without light. This was different. Deeper. Like existing in the space between worlds.
I couldn't feel my body. Couldn't feel pain. Couldn't feel anything except this strange emptiness that surrounded me.
Was I dead?
The thought didn't scare me as much as I expected. There was a strange calm to this place.
Memories came in fragments. Kai's ice blue eyes. The silver dagger gleaming in the moonlight. The burning agony as the blade cut through my finger. The worse pain as it pierced my abdomen. Blood spreading across the stone floor. So much blood.
Logan's face. His gray eyes full of terror as he tried to reach me through the mate bond.
The darkness began to change. Not lighter. But it gained texture somehow. Like the emptiness was filling with something. Some vast, ancient presence.
Then I heard it. A voice.
The voice spoke directly into my consciousness. "Valencia."
I tried to respond but didn't know how. I had no mouth. No body. Just awareness floating in the void.
"You can speak here," the voice said. "This is a place of consciousness. Your mind is enough."
I focused. Tried to form words with my thoughts.
"Where am I?" My voice echoed strangely in this space. "Am I dead?"
"You are between life and death," the voice answered. "Your body lies dying in the world outside. But I pulled your consciousness here. There are truths you must know before you pass beyond."
"Who are you?"
"I am the one who has lived inside you since birth. The one you call the dragon. I am Alduin."
My entire awareness trembled. "Why?" I asked. "Why are you talking to me now? You never spoke before. You only roared. Only fought against me."
"Because you were always trying to control me," Alduin said. His voice held no anger. Just statement of fact. "You saw me as a beast to be tamed. A monster to be caged. No living being accepts imprisonment willingly."
The words hit me hard. Was that true? Had I been the problem all along?
"I tried to work with you," I said. "I tried to understand you."
"No. You tried to dominate me. To force me to submit to your will. That is not partnership. That is slavery."
I wanted to argue. But memories flooded back. Every time I'd tried to shift. Every time I'd thought of the dragon as something separate from myself. Something dangerous that needed to be controlled.
"I was scared," I whispered.
"I know. But fear cannot be the foundation of our bond."
"Then why are we talking now? If I'm dying anyway, what's the point?"
Alduin's presence grew stronger. "Because you need to understand what truly happened. What led to this moment."
"Kai betrayed me. He was never my brother. He was Soren's spy all along."
"Yes. But do you know why?"
I didn't understand the question. "Because Soren raised him. Trained him. Made him into a killer."
"That is part of the truth. But not all of it."
The darkness around me shifted. Images began to form.
I saw King's Fang. The night Logan was shot with over a hundred arrows. His body falling. Blood everywhere.
I saw myself kneeling beside him. Feeling his life fading through the mate bond. Feeling my entire world crumbling.
"Do you remember what you did in that moment?" Alduin asked.
The memory became clearer. I heard my own voice screaming inside my head.
Please. Someone. Anyone. I'll give anything. I'll sacrifice anything. Just save him. Please don't let him die.
I had begged. Pleaded with any force that might be listening. Promised anything for Logan's life.
"I prayed," I said quietly. "I was desperate. I didn't know what else to do."
"You did more than pray. You made a vow. An oath. You promised to give up your most precious thing in exchange for Logan's life."
My awareness froze.
"No," I said. "That was just words. I was panicking. I didn't mean it literally."
"In this world, words have power. Especially words spoken in moments of absolute truth. Your desperation was real. Your willingness to sacrifice was real. And your vow was heard."
The images shifted again. I saw the cursed fog on the journey to Ravencrest Island. The illusions it created. Logan and Kai fighting. Blood and death.
"That wasn't random," I whispered. "The fog showed me the future."
"The fog showed you the consequence of your oath. A warning of what your sacrifice would cost."
My entire being felt like it was shattering. The pieces finally coming together into a horrible truth.
"Kai," I said. "My oath. It was about Kai."
"Yes. Your most precious thing was not your own life. Not your power. It was your brother. The family you thought you'd lost. The connection you desperately wanted to restore."
Tears would have been streaming down my face if I had a face. The grief was overwhelming.
"I killed him," I said. "My oath killed my brother."
"Your oath set events in motion. Kai's path was already dark. Soren had already twisted him. But your vow ensured that the confrontation would happen. That blood would be spilled. That the sacrifice would be complete."
Alduin's voice grew heavier.
"The Heart of Rubia requires blood to truly awaken. Not just any blood. The blood of what you value most. The blood of sacrifice. When Kai cut off your finger, when his blade was stained with your blood and his intent to kill you was absolute, the ritual was completed."
I felt sick. If I had a stomach, I would have vomited.
"The ring," I said. "It didn't work before because it needed this. It needed Kai to betray me. To hurt me. To take it."
"The ring needed to know you understood the cost of power. That you were willing to pay the ultimate price. Now it knows. Now it will answer you."
"I don't want it!" I screamed into the void. "I don't want power that costs my brother's life! Take it back! Undo this!"
"I cannot. What is done is done. The oath was spoken. The price was paid."
"Then I'll refuse the power. I'll throw away the ring. I'll die right here and now."
"That will not bring Kai back. It will only make his death meaningless."
The truth of those words cut through my rage.
Kai was dead. Logan had killed him. And it was all because of the desperate oath I'd made in King's Fang.
"Do you hate me?" Alduin asked quietly.
I wanted to say yes. Wanted to blame the dragon. Blame fate. Blame the gods.
But that would be a lie.
"I hate what happened," I said finally. "I hate that my choice led to this. But I can't hate you for honoring my oath. I made the vow. I said I would sacrifice anything. And when I said 'anything,' I meant it."
Silence filled the space between us.
"In that moment, when Logan was dying, would you have chosen differently?" Alduin asked. "If you knew the cost, would you have let Logan die to save Kai?"
