Chapter 59 Fifty-Nine

Chapter 59 Fifty-Nine
Amber
Death unexpectedly arrives at our doors in life. It might be the loss of a loved one, something, or someone incredibly dear to us. It leaves us in unbearable sorrow and sadness.
That same sorrow was running through my veins like a flood, threatening to overflow and drown me in its everlasting waters. I didn’t think such pain was possible, yet here I was, delving head-on into it like there was no tomorrow.
I lost my mate. I lost my happiness, and thus, I don’t want to live. I couldn’t.
“Amber?” a soft voice called from above me—a voice too gentle to be Dageian’s, but I was too deep in my grief to think too hard about it. I simply waited. I waited for the strike to come, yet it didn’t.
Instead, a gentle hand gripped my shoulder, and I slowly lifted my eyes to see who it was. First, the image was blurry. Then his face became clear as day, and I saw that it wasn’t Dageian at all.
“Max?” I pulled my eyebrows together and shifted my gaze to Mason, who was starting a fire with the broken wood.
It was then that I remembered that I had asked them for help earlier. I just never thought they’d actually come. I was so happy and grateful to see them, so I grabbed Max to my chest and squeezed the daylight out of him.
I was relieved when he hugged me back, but as I opened my eyes, I saw Drew lying on the ground a few feet away, with Dageian directly behind him, with his neck twisted in a very unusual way.
It then occurred that the snapping sound wasn’t Drew at all, but it was the twins breaking Dageian’s neck. That wouldn’t keep him dead, but it surely could buy us enough time to get the hell out of this place.
I scrambled on my knees over to Drew. He lost a lot of blood, and the hole in his back was already healing, but it was going far too slowly. I feared that he would lose too much blood before he could completely heal himself. That wouldn’t be good.
I held him in my arms as I sat on the ground, my tears now flowing again as I watched his eyes bob. I cried into his hair, holding him close to me, and his frail hands still managed to wrap themselves around my waist.
I won’t lose him. Not again.
The thought that I lost Drew was the worst two minutes of my life. My heart had been broken into a zillion pieces before Max had me open my eyes.
The utter relief I felt when I saw him still alive was unexplainable. And I’d literally be damned if I had to go through that pain another time.
I held my wrist to his mouth immediately as the thought occurred to me. His eyes fluttered open to gaze up at me, and I wiped the tears from my eyes before positioning my hand to his mouth again.
“You have to feed, Drew. Or you’ll die.”
“Amber, I won’t—”
“It’s not the time to fight with me, Drew,” I snapped. I didn’t even know where the sudden anger came from. Perhaps it stemmed from Drew’s stubbornness, knowing he’d die if he didn’t. “Please, I can’t lose you again,” I added much calmer, never once breaking my eyes from his.
I could tell that he didn’t want to, and I knew why. He promised himself and me that he’d never feed from me. But he also promised that he’d never leave me, and if he didn’t feed, he’d surely die. I will not have that.
“Drew, please.” My voice broke completely as I stared at him. He could see the turmoil in my eyes until, eventually, he held my hand with his weak, trembling fingers.
I observed as his dark orbs changed into blood-red pools until I felt his fangs grazing my skin. I closed my eyes as I waited, and when he sank them in just a bit, I winced at the sharp pain it caused.
The sound had him retreating his teeth from my wrist, but I snapped my eyes open to look down at him as I shook my head.
“No, it’s okay. Don’t stop.” I tried my best to look and sound reassuring, and though it was reluctant, he sank his teeth deeper before he began drinking.
I have never had a hybrid drink my blood, so I had no idea how it felt. I felt like my blood was being replaced with fire. I could literally feel the blood leaving my body, yet in return, it felt as if it was being replaced with something—something hot and foreign.
“It’s the venom.” I opened my eyes to see that Max and Mason were now crouched beside me as Drew fed from me. He looked like he was in pain, and it made me love him even more. He hated that he had to hurt me, but he also knew it was necessary.
“It feels like that the first time as if your veins are burning,” Max added, and the look on his face showed that he remembered the first time a hybrid drank his blood.
Soon I felt Drew retreating his teeth, though it was quite evident that he needed more. But when I tried to reconnect my hand to his mouth, he refused.
“I’m strong enough,” he mumbled as he sat up. I used my shirt to wipe away the blood from his back, and I was more than relieved to see that the hole was gone. He did, however, still look weak.
“You still need to be stronger,” I insisted. “Drew, please.”
“Amber, I am so sorry I put you through that pain. But when I saw Dageian over you, I lost it. I acted rashly and— "
“And you saved me,” I cut him off by saying. “So please, let me save you.”
“You already did, baby girl.” He held my hand and effortlessly tore a piece of his shirt to wrap it around my wrist. “Thank you.” He pressed a bloody kiss to my cheek, but I didn’t care one bit. It was the best thing I had felt in the past 24 hours.
I hugged him, this time as tight as I could. Almost losing him twice in twenty-four hours was far too much to me. And it was all because of Dageian.
But it was after I thought about him, I realized that he wasn’t anywhere in the room and that there was a massive fire in the middle of his now ruined dining room.
It then occurred to me that the twins were burning him.
“Will that kill him?” I asked as I pulled away from Drew for a bit.
He sighed as he shook his head. “Sadly no. His ashes will just form back into himself. But that was great thinking, guys. He’ll take longer to revive that way.”
The twins moved to hug Drew, as I assumed they missed him, but I didn’t make a move to let go of him. I couldn’t. At least not yet. Thankfully, they didn’t seem to mind.
“What if we take his ashes and throw them into the sea? He’d be sent all over. Would that make him stay dead?”
“Nope,” Mason replied. “Believe it or not, someone has already tried that.”
“They’ve tried everything in the book,” Max added. “Nobody knows how to kill him.”
“We do,” I said with a deep sigh, remembering that he had taken my dagger.
“Whoa, what have we been missing?” Max asked with a hint of excitement.
“Nothing,” Drew threw back sternly. “You two are not getting involved. It’s far too dangerous.”
“I think the phrase you are looking for is ‘thank you,’” Mason taunted, at which Drew laughed a little. It soothed my heart to hear him laugh, and I instinctively hummed in satisfaction as I leant against his chest. His arms tightened around me, but he was still focused on the boys.
“I appreciate you two, really I do. A second later and I’d be—”
“Please don’t say it,” I interjected. The wound was still too fresh.
“Well, you know. Thank you. But you’ve seen Dageian. He won’t hesitate to kill.”
“I’m sorry, guys, but Drew is right,” I said as I lifted my head. “I only asked you two for help today because I was desperate and alone. But I can’t lose any of you too. I will always have to live with Lorenzo being gone. But you two? I won’t be able to bear it.”
“We won’t lose you either,” Max sighed. “Look, if we can help in any way, we will. He is obviously a danger, and the fact that you two were here tonight shows that you need all the help you can get. So please let us help.”
Drew and I shared a look, but I knew that we were thinking the same thing. Our link wasn’t restored as yet, but I could read it in his eyes. They were right. We did need all the help we could get. Especially now, seeing that Dageian has the dagger, it will probably take two more days to make a new one.
“Fine,” I huffed in defeat. “But you two only help from the inside, okay? Not in the field.”
“Deal.” Their beams brightened the room just like always. I really did miss them. They reminded me of myself once upon a time before rogue hunting. Without thinking, I pulled both of them in a hug, even though I was still in Drew’s arms, but I needed this.
“Thank you.” They wouldn’t even begin to imagine how sincere my words were. If it wasn’t for them… I don’t even want to think about it. I felt forever indebted to them.
“Hey, we’ll always be there to help you guys. We would’ve come sooner, but we got the message late.”
“Well, I really am thankful for you two. You didn’t just save Drew’s life. You saved mine too.”
I felt as Drew pulled back when I said this, as if wondering what I meant. However, I quickly dodged the question that I knew was coming.
“I think we should get going,” I said as we all stood up. “I have a crazy feeling that Dageian will rise from his ashes right now.” I shivered involuntarily as I glanced at his burning corpse. If only that would kill him. Our problems would be gone forever.
I just knew that he’d wake up with a newfound hatred for us. We managed to take him down and ruin his game—even if it was just for a minute. Thus, we still have him as an issue. The good thing was that we lived another day for another fight.
