Chapter 132
Scarlett’s POV
I curled up under the covers, holding my breath, listening to the conversation at the door.
"Each has their own beauty," Alexander said with a light chuckle.
"Smooth talker! How many young girls has that silver tongue of yours deceived? Those girls must be fools to think you, Alexander, are some great romantic!"
Isabel's voice carried a hint of mockery, with a touch of intimacy.
"Am I not?" Alexander countered, his voice casual and light.
"Bull! You only know how to flirt, never taking responsibility. How many women have been heartbroken over you, and you never even spared them a glance..."
Isabel's voice was full of irritation.
"Aren't I looking at you properly right now?"
His words made my heart flutter slightly.
This was always Alexander's way with women, playing hot and cold.
I quietly shifted my body, trying to peek out from under the covers.
Just as I was about to see what Isabel looked like, her voice suddenly became more seductive: "Kurt Lawson wants to see you tonight. Want to go together?"
"You'll have to wait for me," he said, and then closed the door.
I immediately sat up in bed, grabbed a towel, and rushed into the bathroom.
The sound of water rushed loudly as I turned on the shower. I hadn't properly bathed in five days, rushing around Silverpeak City searching for any trace of him. I was so exhausted I'd almost forgotten what I looked like.
The warm water cascaded over my skin. Looking at my arms, I confirmed they had indeed darkened considerably.
Silverpeak City's sun was much stronger than Silverlight City's. Five days of constant movement had given my skin an uneven wheat color.
As I was rinsing my hair, the bathroom door suddenly opened.
Alexander leaned against the doorframe, his blue eyes examining me from top to bottom.
"How many days have you been in Silverpeak?" he asked.
"Five days, I think," I answered softly, rinsing the soap from my body.
Alexander leaned against the door, his expression intriguing.
He wore a white shirt, collar casually open, revealing a small patch of his bandaged wound.
"Do you have to go out again?" I asked, though I had already guessed the answer from his conversation with Isabel.
"Luke will take you around later. Whatever you want to eat or buy is fine."
After these simple instructions, he turned to leave.
An inexplicable fear gripped my heart. Not caring whether I had rinsed off all the soap, I chased after him barefoot and embraced him from behind.
"Alexander, this is Silverpeak City!"
I held him tightly.
"Hmm?" he responded flatly. "So?"
"Did my coming to find you make you unhappy?" I asked cautiously.
Alexander laughed, turned around, and pinched my face. "Isn't it too late to ask that now?"
His grip wasn't gentle, making my cheeks ache.
But I didn't dare complain, I could only endure it.
"I... that night I saw you bleeding so much, I thought you would die... so I got scared and..." I stammered an explanation, afraid to say too much and arouse his suspicion.
"Scared of what? Scared I wasn't dead, so you came to Silverpeak to kill me yourself?"
His grip tightened, pinching so hard I couldn't speak.
"No, how could I bear for you to die! I couldn't bear it!" I said indistinctly.
"Alright, alright, you couldn't bear for me to die. I believe you. Can you let go now?"
His voice betrayed no emotion, but his face already showed impatience.
I had no choice but to release him, watching as he walked to the closet and took out a dark suit.
When he removed his shirt, I saw several unhealed wounds on his back.
He treated them briefly, changed into his clothes, and went downstairs.
I reluctantly walked to the window and saw a woman in a red dress wearing a sun hat, taking Alexander's arm as they got into the car.
After Alexander entered the car, the woman suddenly turned and looked up at the third-floor window. I quickly hid behind the curtain.
The hot wind blew through the thin curtains as my heart pounded.
For some reason, I was terrified of being discovered by her.
Only when I heard the sound of the car engine from below did I emerge from behind the curtain.
My gaze followed the black sedan as it grew more distant, until it completely disappeared from view. Only then did I return to the bathroom to finish washing up.
After my shower, I lay back on the large bed where Alexander and I had been intimate not long ago.
The sheets still faintly retained the scent of our bodies. I took a deep breath, but the more I smelled it, the more agitated I became.
My phone suddenly rang. It was Camila calling.
After connecting, she anxiously said, "Did something happen just now? I called you several times but you didn't answer."
"Nothing, I just found Alexander," I replied flatly, not happy at all, even feeling somewhat dejected.
"That's good. I thought something had happened to you. After all, this is Vernon's territory. If he caught you, the consequences would be unimaginable."
Camila said with relief, but then changed the subject: "By the way, does Alexander suspect you?"
Suspect...
How could he not?
I closed my eyes, recalling the wariness in Alexander's eyes and the force of his grip.
If Isabel hadn't suddenly appeared, he wouldn't have let me go today without extracting some information from me.
"Have you seen Mr. Thomas?" Instead of answering her question, I posed another.
Camila immediately fell silent on the other end of the line.
My fingertips gently traced through the air as I asked casually, "So, what mission did he assign you?"
