Chapter 12 Hugh's Birthday Invitation
A bus drove by, blocking the two from view.
Elsa breathed a sigh of relief and hurried to join Maggie on the bus.
There were only a few passengers on the last bus. Elsa chose a window seat and sat down. The wind blew through the gap in the window, ruffling her hair and making her feel much more relaxed.
Maggie sat before her, glanced out the window at the Ferrari, and looked down to play with her cell phone.
The bus started and headed in the direction of the school.
The bus had just traveled a few hundred meters when an engine roared from behind. The black Ferrari then went alongside the bus and drove alongside it.
The loud sound of the Ferrari caused a commotion among the passengers on the bus.
Elsa looked out the window and saw to the right of the bus, the top of the Ferrari open, and Nicholas looking at her.
His gaze took on a cold and angry edge as he glared viciously at her before accelerating hard, the car roaring off into the darkness and disappearing.
Elsa felt some fear. The look in his eyes just now was horrible.
Elsa was having a hard time sleeping tonight, and she got chills all over her body just thinking about the angry look in Nicholas' eyes.
She tossed and turned in bed until the wee hours, so much so that she felt dizzy when she woke up the next day.
Elsa is enrolled in the Literature Department and taking Philosophy and French. She hopes to become a literary scholar or philosopher in the future.
Probably because of her love for literature and having read many books in the field of literature and philosophy, she has a gentle and ladylike air about her.
She could have been swimming in a sea of literature, but she's had to live in Nicholas' shadow for the past few years.
Until now, she thought she'd managed to get away with it.
She was in the habit of waking up early, and even though she was having a bad day, she woke up early and went to the playground to listen to audio material on French literature while taking a walk.
French literature is always so romantic.
The morning air was lovely, and she took a deep breath to ease the dizziness caused by lack of sleep.
She had just walked a few dozen meters when a bright voice called out to her from behind.
She turned around to see a sunny, handsome boy running towards her.
It's Hugh Stiles.
"Hi, good morning."
Hugh looked like he was here for a morning jog. He wore a white tracksuit, his short brown hair was neat, and he wasn't wearing his trademark gold-framed glasses.
His smile was infectious.
Hugh is different from Nicholas. If Nicholas is the cold midnight, Hugh is the warm morning.
"Hi, good morning."
Her smile stiffened a little. She looked around warily as she smiled, wondering if she was terrified of someone's presence or if she was afraid that the girls who liked Hugh would see her and Hugh together.
She knew that Hugh and Nicholas had grown up close together and that the two families had maintained a partnership for over 50 years.
They grew up together, went to the same college, competed in robotics competitions, have the potential to be entrepreneurial partners in the future, and are almost as good at what they do.
Few people know about her hidden relationship with Nicholas, Hugh being one of them.
Elsa often came to the playground in the mornings; she had never seen Hugh before, and she did not think Hugh was in the habit of running in the morning. So why had Hugh come to see her specifically?
Hugh didn't leave after greeting her but walked beside her.
I haven't seen you for a couple of days. How have you been? What have you been up to?
"Fortunately, it's business as usual. Besides classes, I have a part-time job at the café. You know the Polaris?" Elsa took off her headphones and acted as if nothing had happened.
"'Polaris,’ I know, nice café; I've been there a few times."
Hugh has a very easygoing appearance and is very talkative. All those who have come into contact with him know that he is very easy to get along with. Only very few people knew that he was very thoughtful.
Hugh came from the Stiles family, which was in charge of several well-known law firms, and many famous lawyers had appeared among his elders. Growing up in such a family under the influence of the environment, he naturally became very resourceful.
Fortunately, Hugh had never intended any harm towards Elsa.
Elsa wasn't hostile to him, " Are you here for your morning jog because it’s rare to see you in the playground? I remember you not being much of a workout person."
Hugh squinted at the sun, stretched, and said lazily, "Certainly not here to exercise. I'd much rather stay in bed and sleep on a nice morning like this."
He looked at Elsa and said, I specifically came to see you. I heard you visit the playground for a walk almost every day, so I decided to try my luck.
"Looking for me?" Elsa knew Hugh wasn't here to run, but she was still surprised that he didn't hide it and said he was here to see her.
Her face grew pale, "why did you want to see me?"
Elsa had just finished speaking when it occurred to her that Nicholas should have sent him. Was it about what happened last night?
Hugh shoved his hands into his pants pockets and lazily gazed at the clouds in the sky. "Looking for you so early, of course, it's important. I was here to invite you to a party."
"A party where you will not be disappointed!"
