Chapter 34 — Marco

Silence reigns in the council chambers, as I stand beside Katina, feeling the heavy weight of the accusing stares and thoughts directed at her, my mate.

My heart clenches as I glance at her, standing amidst the sea of skeptical eyes. Her delicate frame seems even smaller, burdened by the weight of betrayal and lies. I yearn to shield her from this harsh scrutiny, to protect her innocence, but the council also needs to know that what Lucia has said isn’t true at all. I grip the edges of the wooden podium, my knuckles turning white. As the Alpha, I hold immense power, but I won’t wield it recklessly. The bond between us is sacred, but this type of accusation demands an unbiased investigation, even if I know no investigation is required.

A mix of protectiveness and frustration surges within me. I know Katina is innocent, this I’m sure of. But her shocked condition hinders her ability to mount a defense. How can she convince the pack when she can barely form a coherent thought?

It's like she is stuck in her mind, her thoughts jumping from one sequence to the other, never forming a tangible thread before spinning into another web.

I feel torn between my duty as an Alpha and my duty to Katina as her mate. In the end, I choose her, because I realize that I’ll always choose her no matter the consequences.

I guid her out of the council chambers, my hand wrapping around her arm gently. As we step into the dimly lit corridor, I feel a tremor run through her body. Her muscles tighten under my touch, and I know it’s her anxiety gnawing at her.

Lucia’s words echo in my mind like a persistent drumbeat. The accusation she hurled at Katina labeling her an infidel still rings loud and clear. The weight of it hangs heavy in the air, effectively shattering the fragile alliance we had been hoping to forge between my pack and Ezra’s pack.

I glance at Katina, her beautiful face etched with a mix of shock, hurt, and anger. It’s all there, swimming beneath her calm façade. And in that moment, I understand why she had been hesitant about the alliance. I feel a pang of guilt for not realizing it sooner.

How foolish I was, assuming Katina’s lack of enthusiasm was driven by her disinterest. But now, it’s crystal clear that she had been trying to avoid an altercation with her ex pack in front of the council. She had been burdened by this knowledge, carrying it quietly within her, and I wish she had told me sooner.

I grip her hand tightly, intertwining our fingers, offering her as much support as I can. It’s time for her to know that she’s not alone in this fight. She raises her eyes to meet mine, and I see a flicker of vulnerability, quickly masked by her usual resilience.

We continue walking along the corridor, the shadows dancing on the walls like flickering phantoms. I can sense the weight of the truth bomb weighing on both of us, threatening to drown us in its undertow. But within that darkness, sparks of determination and loyalty ignite.

Katina inspires the deepest trust within me. Her unwavering loyalty, her fierce dedication to our pack, it is undeniable. The accusation thrust upon her is nothing more than a desperate attempt to sow doubt and discord among us.

The moment we reach a peaceful stream, I wrap my arms around her, trying to provide the comfort she so desperately needs.

I bring my other hand to her cheek, feeling the warmth of her skin against my palm. “Katina,” I whisper, my voice filled with conviction. “You know the truth, and so do I. We won’t let this accusation break us. Together, we’ll prove our unity and loyalty to our pack.”

She nods, and rests her head against my shoulder, sighing heavily. But after a few moments, she pushes away from me as if I burned her, her eyes filled with a mixture of frustration and pain. The rejection stings, and I feel a pang of hurt piercing my chest.

“What are we doing, Marco?” she exclaims, her voice laced with anguish. “I can’t do this anymore. I can’t keep pretending to be in a relationship that is nothing but fake.”

Her words strike me like a blow to the gut, leaving me momentarily breathless. This is not the time for heated arguments, but her pain has ignited a fire within me, and I meet her gaze, my voice laced with anger and wounded pride.

“A fake relationship? Is that what you think this is?” I snap, my voice tinged with hurt. “How dare you give up so easily, Katina? How dare you call what we have fake?”

She tries to interrupt, but I plow on, unable to contain my emotions any longer. “For me, it has been real since the moment I laid eyes on you. Every single day, since the mating dance, I have professed my love to you. And every single day, I have meant every word.”

Her eyes widen, shimmering with unshed tears. “I have been in love with you since then too,” she admits, her voice trembling. “But I’m scared, Marco. Scared of what Ezra might do, scared of getting hurt again.”

My anger ebbs away like a tide receding, replaced by a deep well of understanding. I reach out and gently take her hand, pulling her closer. “I understand your fear, Katina. But let me make one thing clear. You are my choice. I choose you, in spite of the risks, I will always choose you. And I will do everything in my power to protect you, and Rhys, because you two mean more than the world to me.”

Her tear-filled eyes search mine for truth, for reassurance. Slowly, she nods, her grip tightening on my hand. With newfound determination, I lean in and press my lips against hers, igniting a firestorm of both passion and tenderness.

Our kiss is a combustible mix of love and longing, a silent testament to the depth of our feelings. In that moment, all doubts and fears fade away, replaced by the searing connection we’ve shared since the beginning.

Her confession and acceptance of her love for me cements another level of our mating bond, solidifying our commitment to one another.

We break apart, our foreheads resting against each other’s, our breaths mingling. As we sit by the tranquil stream, the air around us crackles with an electric energy.

“Katina, I won’t promise you a life without difficulties,” I say, my voice filled with resolve. “But I will promise you that I’ll be by your side through it all. We will face whatever comes together, fighting for our love.”

A glimmer of hope dances in her eyes as she gazes at me, her vulnerability and strength shining through. “I trust you, Marco,” she whispers, her voice filled with newfound certainty. “I choose you too.”

I pull Katina into my arms, seeking solace in the embrace, as we sit together by the rippling stream, the gentle sound of water providing a much-needed reprieve from the chaos that surrounds us. As we stare at the tranquil scene, a calmness washes over us. It’s a moment of respite amidst the storm. The scent of wildflowers fills the air, mingling with the fresh earthy aroma of the forest. Our fingers intertwine, offering comfort and reassurance.

In the midst of silence, Katina interrupts our reverie. Her voice trembles with a mix of anxiety and determination, breaking the peaceful ambiance. “Marco, what are we going to do about Ezra and his pack?”

I sigh, my brows furrowing with worry, because the truth is, I have no idea what to do next.
