Chapter 25 — Katina

It's been almost a month since I gave birth to Rhys, my beautiful little pup who has captured my heart since the day I first laid my eyes on him. Motherhood is both challenging and rewarding. Watching Rhys grow day by day fills me with pride, but also terrifies me to my core because I know I’ll go to the ends of the world to keep him safe, and the last thing I want to do in my life is hurt someone.

As Rhys grows, so does my relationship with Marco. I can feel our bond getting stronger and stronger with each passing day, but I am not sure if I am ready to reveal the depths of my feelings just yet.

The last thing I want to do is give my heart out to him, only to have it crushed by his true mate’s inevitable arrival. Perhaps it’s a feeling he shares too, as we’ve yet to speak those three little words.

There is a foolish part of me that wishes he never finds her, but I know that is selfish, and I can’t be that with Marco, not after everything he has done for me. But I don't want to dwell on that. Right now, my focus is on the pack and the arrangements for the mating ceremony for two members of our pack (Aya and Jackson).

It's a monumental occasion and we're all chipping in to make it perfect. Marco and I have been busy helping to organize the whole event as the Alpha and Luna, from the food and drinks to the music and decorations.

The day of the festivities arrives and everyone is in high spirits. I can feel my heart swelling with pride as I survey the beautiful scene before me. The grassy meadow is adorned with colorful flowers picked from the nearby forest and intricately woven garlands.

Large woven mats have been laid out, and the pack members are adorned in their best costumes. Their colorful fabrics and elaborate accessories pop against the lush green of the meadow, and the gentle breeze plays with the tassels and feathers adorning their hair.

The mouthwatering scents of meat searing on the cooking pits fills the air, and a large bonfire sits in the center of the meadow, with jovial pack members gathered around it.

My mind drifts back to the early planning stages of this event, where we put all our creative energies to use to pull off a celebration that would be special and memorable for everyone.

I had spent hours helping to set up the marquee, which would soon host the main feast of the evening. It was a fine piece of craftsmanship, with beautiful intricate carvings and drapes with delicate fringing on the edges, adorned with a multitude of hanging lanterns, glowing bright with the amber hues of fire.

But it is not just the layout and decorations that made this event beautiful, it is the energy that everyone has put in, the camaraderie and the dedication to ensure that this ceremony goes well. The bond that each member of our pack share is palpable, and it is this spirit of togetherness which is also celebrated today.

As the sun starts to set, the air turns cooler, and the pack members gathered around the main ceremony area, a woven canopy adorned with vines, leaves and flowers. And there it was, sitting in the center of the canopy, the sacred fire.

Marco begins the ceremony with a powerful howl and all the pack members join in as a mark of respect. It’s one of the most magnificent sounds in nature, a choir of singular, musical voices singing in perfect unison.

The ceremony proceeds with beautiful rhythmic drumming, the beat resounding in my heart. The mated pair, two beautiful black-furred wolves, emerge from the forest, led by Marco. It’s as if time has slowed down, and a quietness overtakes the meadow.

The couple stands under the canopy, looking radiant and in love, as they shift back into their forms, before they wander off to put on some clothes. They exchange beautiful vows, words that come straight from the heart, and the bond between them emanates a warm and irresistible glow as they shift back into their wolf form once again.

Their eyes meet, they nuzzle and lick noses, and an explosive cheer of applause greets the first exchange of kisses. I feel my own heart flutter in my chest, and I can’t help but feel a little envious of their beautiful connection.

The pack's energy is intoxicating, and even the most reserved among us find ourselves being swept along on a tide of merrymaking.

I smile as I watch Rhys, my little pup, stare in awe at the celebrations, and I feel a warm sense of contentment as I realize that this is truly what brings our pack together. In our moments of joy and happiness, we become a part of something larger than ourselves–a community, a family, a pack.

But as the sun fully sets, the mood changes. The festivities come to halt as our wolf senses detect a foreign presence on our pack lands. The pack comes together in a fierce display of solidarity and strength. I grab Rhys and make my way to the center of the commotion.

"What's happening?" I ask Marco as soon as I reach him.

"We're under attack," he replies, with a fierceness in his eyes that sends chills down my spine. "But don't worry, we can handle this."

Suddenly, there's a loud growl and a pack of rogue wolves emerge from the shadows. They're huge, with matted fur, dirtied fur, and menacing eyes that glow in the dark. We all growl in chorus, ready for battle.

I feel my heart pounding in my chest as adrenaline rushes through my veins. This is not just a fight for territory, but for our very survival. We circle around the pack, our boundaries clearly defined, ready to defend our home and protect our loved ones. And as the fight begins, I am filled with a mix of fear, determination, and hope.

I find a safe spot and hide Rhys, before I join the battle, knowing that I have to put my weight in, even though it kills me to leave my pup out there while a fight is going on.

The battle is intense, with fangs bared and claws outstretched. Growls and snarls fill the air as we clash against our enemies. We fight with every ounce of strength we have, determined not to lose. Through the heat of battle, I hear Marco's voice beside me, barking orders and issuing warnings, but all I can focus on is the fight. Teeth clenching, fur flying, blood spilling, we continue to fight with every ounce of strength we have. And finally, after what seems like an eternity, the last rogue wolf goes down with a whimper.

As we stand there, panting and exhausted, Marco pulls me into an embrace and I breathe a sigh of relief. We survived this battle, but what lies ahead for our pack is still unknown. The war may have been won, but the battle to preserve our pack and way of life has just begun.
