Chapter 89 Meeting Again

Chapter 89 Meeting Again

Michael didn't even know what to say. This was such a rare perk!

"Should I wait for you at the office then?"

But the man had already walked away.

At this moment.

In the master bedroom's bathroom, steam filled the air.

Emily had just finished showering and walked out wrapped in a silk nightgown.

She timed it perfectly and removed her shower cap.

Her hair was smooth and silky, with occasional water droplets sliding down her slender neck.

The room looked exactly as it had two years ago, even the scent of the aromatherapy hadn't changed.

The familiarity made her heart ache.

Emily pressed her lips together and looked away, walking straight to the desk. She dried her hair while looking at the computer.

According to the collaboration with Morrison Corp, there were still several design details that needed to be modified based on shareholder requirements.

But her fingers had barely touched the stylus when—

Click!

A soft sound of the door lock turning came from outside.

Emily's whole body stiffened, her heart leaping to her throat!

The old lady was already asleep, and Susan wouldn't come up at this hour either.

Could it be... Alex?

But didn't Grandma say he wouldn't be back for the next few days?

She instantly tensed up, her bright eyes quickly scanning the surroundings. She grabbed a heavy crystal ornament from the desk and clutched it tightly in her hand.

Only a desk lamp was on in the room, so the lighting wasn't very bright.

Emily tiptoed to hide behind the door, her heartbeat quickening...

The footsteps outside were steady and calm.

The door opened.

A tall, upright figure stepped into the room.

Emily's heart pounded wildly. Just before the person could reach for the light switch, she swung the ornament at them: "Pervert! Breaking in to steal in the middle of the night!"

She used all her strength. But her wrist was caught firmly in mid-air. The man's grip was strong, yet he held back at the last moment, not hurting her.

Almost instantly, a familiar crisp scent mixed with a faint tobacco smell hit her face.

They were barely inches apart...

Emily froze, her movement stopping abruptly. It was him!

In the darkness, they could clearly feel each other's body heat and heartbeat.

The air became strangely frozen.

Alex was also stunned, a trace of surprise flashing in his eyes.

He thought this room was still empty and had just habitually come back to stay.

He never expected someone would be hiding inside...

The skin his fingertips touched was delicate and warm. He recognized her almost instantly.

But both remained silent.

The atmosphere was tense and awkward.

After a long while.

Alex let go of her hand. "It's me."

Emily quickly withdrew her hand and stepped back to create distance: "Mr. Baker should at least check the time before entering a room to sleep."

She suppressed all her panic and confusion, leaving only detachment.

Alex stood in place, his expression calm and emotionless, so cold it was as if he was facing... a stranger.

His indifferent gaze swept over her: "This is my room."

One sentence left Emily speechless.

Yes, this was his bedroom all along.

She was the one intruding.

She bit her lip and reached to press the switch on the wall.

Warm yellow light filled the entire room.

Emily took a deep breath: "I didn't choose to stay here. Grandma didn't want me to leave, so I just slept here for one night."

She wore a silk nightgown with a slightly loose collar, revealing a section of her slender collarbone. Her cool eyes and brows no longer had the softness of two years ago, but instead showed more of the capability she'd gained in the workplace.

Alex's gaze swept over her without lingering or showing any extra emotion: "Mm."

Emily's heart relaxed slightly.

Good thing Eleanor was sleeping with the old lady...

Seeing Alex about to walk further inside, she froze and immediately spoke up: "Mr. Baker, I've already used this room. Please go stay in another room."

Alex paused, looking over with a half-smile: "I'm going to the walk-in closet to get a tie. Are you so eager to kick me out because you're afraid of misunderstandings, or afraid someone won't be able to control themselves?"

Emily's lips twitched. What did this man mean?

Was she that kind of person?!

A blush quickly spread across her cheeks, and Emily's palms grew tense.

Just as she was about to say something, she saw the man's body suddenly stiffen.

Alex felt a sharp, sudden pain in his stomach that made his brows furrow tightly.

His hand instinctively pressed against his stomach.

Emily saw it clearly, her expression changing.

His stomach problem... was acting up again.

Five years ago, he was constantly busy with work and social obligations, and with irregular eating habits, he developed a serious stomach condition.

When it flared up, the pain would make him break out in cold sweat. She hadn't expected that after all these years, it still hadn't improved.

She frowned and immediately picked up her phone: "I'll call the family doctor."

"No need." Alex refused in a low voice. "I'll go back myself."

He forced himself to keep walking out, but his face was visibly pale.

Emily watched him like this and sighed helplessly: "Come on, why are you being stubborn? If you're in severe pain here, you'll wake up Grandma and make her worry about you."

And... if Eleanor woke up and got scared, that wouldn't be good either.

She bit her lip and quickly stepped forward: "Just wait."

Without waiting for his response, she hurried downstairs to find stomach medicine.

If she remembered correctly, the medicine box should be in the first-floor drawer.

Her silk dress swept lightly across the stairs, her steps light but steady.

Alex stood in place, watching her slender figure, his eyes deep.

For a moment, he was... in a trance.

It was just like during their marriage years.

Every time his stomach problem flared up, she would do the same thing—go downstairs without a word to find medicine, her delicate, pretty face full of concern.

She would also make many nutritious meals that were good for the stomach.

Things had changed, but her habits hadn't changed at all.

Going down the stairs, she still led with her right foot first. When looking for medicine, she still habitually rummaged through the items on top first.

In the living room.

Emily was completely unaware of his thoughts.

She just wanted to find the medicine quickly so she could go back to sleep.

Steady footsteps came from behind as Alex slowly walked down.

He leaned against the sofa, his face still showing no signs of improvement.

The air was very quiet.

So quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Suddenly, the man's low voice rang out: "Why did you come back to the country?"

Emily's movement of searching for medicine paused, her fingertips tightening slightly. She didn't turn around: "Work."

"Not because of Matthew?"

That light remark was like a needle piercing Emily's heart.

When she turned to look at him, her eyes were full of mockery. "Mr. Baker really thinks highly of me as always."

In his mind, she was always like this.

If she left him, it must be because of another man.

Three years of marriage, and he never trusted her once.

Now that they were divorced, he still speculated about her with the most sordid thoughts.

Emily only felt her heart turn ice cold.

She said nothing more and placed the stomach medicine and water heavily on the coffee table in front of him: "You should take better care of your health, so Grandma won't have to worry about you."

With that, she turned and headed upstairs.

Alex's face darkened.
