Chapter 8 Going to the Hospital for a Checkup
Emily was about to say something, but there was no chance at all.
"Ugh—"
She gripped the sink, throwing up violently. Tears spilled from her eyes, and her fingertips dug hard into her palm.
Alex couldn't find out she was pregnant. Absolutely not!
But right now...
"Ugh—"
Her stomach churned again.
The reaction was too strong. She couldn't suppress it at all.
What should she do, what should she do...
Emily's eyes were full of panic.
Alex stood there, his brows furrowed deeply.
He was about to step forward to pat her back, but Emily had already straightened up.
Looking up, she met the man's furrowed brows.
Even if he knew she was pregnant, he wouldn't want this baby, would he?
Emily held back her heartache, casually wiped the corner of her mouth, and said calmly, "We always used protection. How could I be pregnant?"
"I'm throwing up because I'm disgusted by you two, that's all."
Though she said this, her hand behind her back clutched at her clothes.
She didn't know if Alex would believe her...
Alex stared hard into her eyes, his sharp black eyes catching every subtle expression on her face.
Emily bit down hard, forcing herself to meet the man's intensely oppressive gaze, not daring to even breathe heavily.
She couldn't hold on much longer. She was about to push past him and return to her room.
But Alex stepped forward, his tall figure closing in, his eyes cold. "Emily, you think I'll believe that?"
"I have no reason to lie to you." Emily immediately stepped back, her back against the sink, looking at him mockingly. "Grace is still waiting for you downstairs. If something happens to her, won't you feel bad?"
Alex's eyes suddenly turned cold, and he grabbed her wrist again. "Emily, there's no love between us anyway. You'd better not be pregnant!"
His words were like a thorn, stabbing hard into Emily's heart, almost disrupting her breathing.
No love?
How cold and heartless.
Her three years of devotion, in his eyes, were nothing but a clown's performance.
Probably worth less than the household servants.
Now his heart and eyes were full of Grace and the child in her belly.
Emily took several deep breaths. "Of course, I don't want to have your child either!"
Every word was firm and resolute.
In those clear eyes, there was no longer a trace of warmth!
Alex's eyes darkened, and he pulled her downstairs. "Whether you're pregnant or not, the hospital can find out."
"No!" Emily resisted. "I'm not going to the hospital! I know my own body. I'm not pregnant!"
"Alex, you bastard!"
She absolutely couldn't go to the hospital!
Once there, the pregnancy would be completely exposed.
Then, whether it was Alex or anyone else, they would never let her and the baby go!
But no matter how she hit or cursed him, Alex remained completely unaffected.
Instead, seeing her intense reaction, his suspicion grew stronger.
"If you're not pregnant, why are you so against going to the hospital? Whether you are or not, one test will tell!"
Emily knew that once Alex decided something, no one could change it.
Suddenly, inspiration struck. She used all her strength to shake him off and tried to keep herself calm. "Fine, then I'll put your mind at rest completely."
"But I don't need you to come with me. Let Anna go with me."
Alex frowned, clearly not agreeing.
But just then, Grace was helped over by a servant, her tone worried. "Alex, Miss Johnson, are you both okay?"
"What happened earlier was all my fault. I shouldn't have troubled Miss Johnson."
As she finished speaking, her suspicious gaze fell on Emily.
Emily laughed coldly, her eyes devoid of any warmth. "Good that you know."
With that, she turned and walked out, not wanting to stay there another second.
As for Anna, she quickly followed.
She'd heard all the commotion inside. If the missus was pregnant, that would be wonderful!
Alex stood there, his eyes complex.
Then he took out his phone and immediately sent a message to the hospital.
If Emily really was pregnant...
Grace watched his stern face seem to waver, and her heart immediately sank.
No, she couldn't!
She absolutely couldn't let Emily block her path to a wealthy family!
A tear fell on Alex's cuff. Her eyes red, her soft voice full of apology. "Alex, I'm sorry. Did I cause you trouble?"
"But Miss Johnson, she..."
Alex glanced at her, his tone flat. "It's fine. Don't have too much contact with her from now on. Avoid her when you can."
Grace's expression froze, keenly sensing something was wrong.
What did he mean by that?
Even now, he was still protecting Emily?!
And his tone completely lacked the gentleness and patience of before.
Grace looked up uneasily, carefully studying the man.
She could see clearly that when Alex looked at Emily just now, though furious, there was also a hint of tension and concern she'd never seen before.
Could it be... Alex wasn't completely without feelings for Emily?
As soon as this thought emerged, the weeds of jealousy in Grace's heart grew wildly!
No, she wouldn't allow it!
Grace showed a perfectly measured smile. "I know you're doing this for my good, not wanting me and the baby to have any more accidents."
"Alex, thank you."
With that, she leaned softly toward his embrace.
Alex stared at the black car leaving through the door, his sharp eyes narrowing slightly.
He calmly helped Grace aside. "Take good care of yourself. If anything happens, have someone call me."
With that, he turned and headed to the study.
Leaving Grace standing alone, her nails digging deep into her palm.
She could feel Alex's attention gradually shifting toward Emily.
Why?
Why should Emily have everything!
This should have been hers!
Just wait. She would never let Emily stay smug.
A while later, the car pulled into Central Hospital and Emily stepped out, her fingertips ice-cold.
Anna followed closely behind, concerned. "Ma'am, take it slow. Should I help you?"
"No need." Emily waved her hand, forcing down the panic in her heart, trying to make her steps look steady.
This hospital was very reputable, and crucially, the Baker family had shares in it.
Emily took a deep breath, staying calm.
The registration had been done on the way.
Since Alex had called ahead, a nurse was specifically assigned to lead her to the examination room.
"Miss Johnson, here's the urine sample cup. Please go to the restroom and bring back a sample." The nurse handed over a transparent plastic cup, her tone respectful.
Emily took the cup, but her fingertips trembled slightly.
A urine test was the most direct way to detect pregnancy.
Once the sample was sent in, her pregnancy would be immediately exposed.
She had to think of something...
