Chapter 76 The Old Lady Backs Them Up

Chapter 76 The Old Lady Backs Them Up

No, that familiar figure was nowhere in sight.

"Go find her!" Alex's cold voice rang out.

The assistant suddenly froze all over. "Miss Johnson!"

His loud voice cut right through the crowd.

But the terminal was huge, packed with people.

The shout got swallowed up. The slim figure who'd already gone inside didn't turn back.

The assistant glanced over nervously. "Mr. Baker, want to check leftover tickets? Looks like one business class seat left..."

Alex said nothing, but his eyes turned dark and scary. His hand at his side clenched and unclenched.

Seeing that, the assistant shut up and just waited nearby.

Right then, a cold scoff came from behind.

"Mr. Baker, you're really bored, chasing her all the way to the airport? Tsk tsk, if you knew it'd end like this, why bother back then?"

Alex's brow furrowed, his anger sharpening. He turned slowly—Rachel was right there.

The woman in high heels eyed him coolly. "What, Mr. Baker here to see someone off too?"

Ha, too late!

Good thing Emmie went in early, or bumping into this guy would've wasted time.

Alex's face went ice-cold. "You knew she was leaving today?"

Press conference ended yesterday, and she's catching a flight this morning? Plus Rachel showing up here—she had to know ahead of time.

Rachel sneered nonstop, no holding back. "What's it to you? Mr. Baker thinks he's so devoted? When Emmie gave you her all before, you acted all high and mighty, treating that fake-sweet Grace like gold. Now you regret it? Emmie just walked out, and here you are chasing. Tsk. Sucks to get dumped, right?"

The assistant nearby got a headache listening.

Lady, please stop!

He waved signals at Rachel from behind.

Rachel ignored him completely. This was all what Alex owed their Emmie!

She smirked and stepped closer. "Taking advantage of Emmie while pining for Grace. Mr. Baker, you not tired?"

Alex narrowed his eyes. "Watch your mouth, Ms. Smith."

"I speak straight." Rachel scoffed. "Emmie said it's over for good. Stop bothering her."

With that, she pulled out a box. "Take this back."

Alex caught it on reflex, a bad feeling hitting him.

Snap.

The box opened.

Alex's eyes darkened. It was Emily's wedding ring.

Now she was giving even this back.

His fingers clenched tight, his breath feeling rough.

Rachel said, "Mr. Baker, let her go. She deserves better."

Then she walked off.

She'd handed it over—no reason to stick around.

Alex stood in the busy airport hall, gripping the ring, cold and alone all over.

Suddenly.

A plane takeoff announcement broke the air.

He looked out the window. A passenger jet was climbing slowly.

The assistant asked carefully nearby. "Mr. Baker, so what now?"

Buzz—

Before he finished, Alex's phone rang.

The screen flashed "Grace" over and over.

Alex glanced and hung up.

But two seconds later, it rang again.

Alex had no patience left—he blocked her.

The assistant saw it all and swallowed hard. "Mr. Baker, head back to the company now?"

Alex stayed quiet a long time, then said hoarsely, "Yeah."

...

One hour later.

Top floor of Baker Corporation.

Alex pushed open the office door and heard an exasperated voice. "Oh, back already? These old bones thought you'd wander outside all day."

He froze in the doorway, surprise in his eyes. "Grandma? What are you doing here?"

Margaret sat on the sofa in a stylish suit, her silver hair curled up.

She was full of energy—not like an old lady at all.

The old lady snorted. "If I don't come, how do I see how messed up you are now? Look at you—didn't bring Emmie back, huh?"

Alex's lips pressed into a thin line.

He sat silently at his desk and rubbed his brow. "Grandma, just drop it."

Her cane banged the floor hard. "How'd I end up with such a blockhead grandson? Huh? Emmie's so great, and you don't cherish her—always buzzing around that Grace. Donkey kick your brain or what?"

Alex's throat tightened. "If she wants to go, I can't stop her."

"Can't stop her?!" The old lady shot to her feet, furious. "Emmie's sweet and loyal to you! And you treat a snake like treasure! No wonder she left. If I were her, I'd line up 800 rich guys to make you mad!"

Alex glanced at the assistant shaking at the door.

He'd tell the maids later to take away Grandma's gadgets!

What junk does she watch online all day?

The assistant wanted to cry but stood there pretending not to hear.

In the office.

Alex kept his eyes down, silent, taking the scolding.

The old lady unloaded nonstop, getting angrier.

If not for this useless kid, Emmie wouldn't have taken her great-grandkid abroad?

At her age, she just wanted to hold a great-grandbaby!

All ruined by Alex.

Suddenly.

The assistant at the door caught a glimpse, eyes wide in shock. "Miss Miller? Why are you here now? You can't go in..."

But Grace ignored him, eyes red as she reached the door in a plain white dress—her shaky voice even more pitiful. "Alex, why didn't you pick up? And... block me..."

The old lady inside heard it and her temper flared. "Why're you everywhere? Get out!"

The cane slammed the floor with a dull bang.

Grace's face stiffened. She looked over.

Didn't expect this old bat here!

Hate flashed in her eyes, gone in a blink. She played meek. "Grandma, I need to talk to Alex. I wouldn't come to the company otherwise..."

Margaret hid none of her annoyance. "What do you got to say to him? Just money or a spot in the family. Miss Miller, you're young—no need for me to spell it out. As long as I'm breathing, you won't step foot in the Baker family!"

Grace choked up, nails digging into her palm, forcing it down. "Grandma, you misunderstand me so much. It's not like that!"
