Chapter 69 Divorce, Then Knowing to Pursue
Andrew said, "Emmie used to treat you with complete sincerity, holding nothing back. Now that she can throw everything away, it shows she's truly let go."
Let go?
Alex pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek.
He looked down at the box in his arms, filled with gifts he had casually given her back then.
A cheap snow globe, an ordinary necklace, even party favors he'd brought back from some business dinner.
These things he'd never given a second thought to, Emily had carefully kept for three years.
Seeing his silence, Andrew clasped his hands behind his back. "Clean up the trending topics and public opinion. Emmie's leaving the day after tomorrow. I don't want her bothered by this mess before she goes."
Alex pressed his lips together. "Andrew, I understand."
Andrew said coolly, "Better be."
Screech—
Suddenly, brakes squealed. A refined, upright figure stepped out of the car. Matthew had already spotted that black Bentley. He walked up calmly and nodded politely. "Andrew, Mr. Baker."
Andrew smiled warmly. "Matthew's here. Looking for Emmie?"
"Yes, my mother asked me to bring something for Emmie," Matthew said.
Nearby, Alex narrowed his eyes. Those words really rubbed him the wrong way.
But Matthew didn't look his way again.
He knew clearly that the moment he saw Alex waiting at the Johnson family's door, a sense of crisis had welled up inside him.
He understood Emily too well, knew how deeply she'd once loved. Even if she seemed to have let go on the surface, that kind of love couldn't be easily erased.
Alex pursuing her so aggressively now... was definitely not a good sign.
Just as he was thinking this, Alex suddenly spoke up. "Andrew, I'd like to discuss the details of the joint press conference with Emmie in person. Just a few minutes of her time."
Andrew's brow furrowed slightly, clearly reluctant, but considering the cooperation between the two families and the stock market turmoil, he finally relented. "Come in then."
Alex stepped through the door again.
Matthew followed calmly. "Mr. Baker is so busy, yet still finds time to personally handle press conference matters. How dedicated."
Alex glanced at him coldly. "Not as much as you, coming here every day."
The two men walked into the Johnson family living room one after the other.
The atmosphere was somewhat tense.
At that moment.
Emily sat on the living room sofa, sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows onto her. Her casual, loose overalls made her look gentle yet relaxed.
"Why are you both here?" Emily had just finished taking her folic acid when she suddenly heard footsteps.
Looking up to see two familiar figures, her eyes widened in surprise, and almost reflexively, she shoved the small pill bottle behind a cushion.
This scene fell right into Alex's view.
His brow pressed down sharply. "Are you sick? What medicine are you taking?"
Emily couldn't be bothered to explain. "How did Mr. Baker get in? I remember the servants already closed the door."
As she spoke, she leaned back into the sofa and casually picked up some cherries from the fruit plate, eating them slowly.
Her expression was relaxed—a carefree look Alex had never seen before.
During her three years at the Baker family, she'd always been reading the room, even her smiles tinged with obedience. She'd never been like this—unguarded, freely alive.
Alex's chest tightened again.
Matthew naturally sat beside Emily, smoothly passing her a box of raspberries. "Didn't Mr. Baker say he wanted to hold a press conference? How do you plan to handle it?"
Hearing this, Emily raised an eyebrow.
The press conference needed discussion?
Just then, a servant came forward. "Mr. Moore, your coffee."
Matthew nodded warmly. "Thank you."
"But..." The servant turned to Alex, looking troubled. "Mr. Baker, would you... like anything?"
Alex's gaze fell on the person across from him, the corner of his lips curving slightly. "She knows."
Emily sneered inwardly. He sure had some nerve.
Three years of marriage, and he'd never remembered her preferences. Now he expected her to remember his?
She slowly wiped her hands, thinking for a moment. "Mr. Baker likes wasabi with black coffee. Go prepare it."
The servant froze. Such a... unique taste?
Not daring to question it, she quickly headed to the kitchen.
Alex's face instantly darkened. Wasabi with black coffee?
What human being would like that?
Emily ignored his sour expression and spoke directly. "Didn't Mr. Baker want to discuss the press conference? Just say it."
Alex suppressed the churning emotions in his chest. "A joint banquet between our two families would be the perfect opportunity to publicly clarify all the rumors. We can also formally announce the progress of our cooperation and completely stabilize the stock price. I'll arrange everything for the banquet. You just need to attend for half an hour."
Emily refused outright. "Not going. One clarification statement is enough. No need for some banquet."
"Emily." Alex's voice dropped. "This affects Johnson Corporation's stock price. Are you going to just ignore it?"
She looked up coldly. "The Johnson family will handle our own affairs. No need for Mr. Baker to overstep."
The man's expression grew even colder.
The oppressive atmosphere made even the servants hesitant to approach.
Matthew spoke up at the right moment. "There's no rush for this. Mr. Baker naturally has ways to suppress public opinion. But I came today to bring you a farewell gift from my mother."
With that, an elegant, high-end gift box was opened, revealing a set of exquisitely designed, one-of-a-kind jewelry—a complete matching set with an extremely elegant style of gemstones woven with gold.
Emily's eyes lit up. "Please thank your mother for me. I love it."
Matthew said, "No need to be formal with me."
Watching their easy familiarity, Alex suddenly stood up. "About the banquet, I'll have my assistant send you the schedule. You must attend. This is for the Johnson family and for our future cooperation."
Emily shrugged indifferently. "If you want to hold it, go ahead. It's not my family's money anyway."
It had nothing to do with her really. She'd just treat it as a free meal.
Alex looked at her meaningfully, then turned and left.
Just then, the servant came over, puzzled. "Huh? Mr. Baker left already? He didn't even drink the coffee we prepared."
Emily couldn't help but laugh. "Just throw it out."
The servant pressed her lips together, thinking to herself that this Mr. Baker wasn't all that great.
How could he compare to how thoughtful Mr. Moore was toward their young miss?
No wonder she got divorced!
Matthew chatted with Andrew for a while before getting up to leave.
However, several boxes of imported fruit were delivered directly to the Johnson family's door.
Emily was stunned. "Did you buy these?"
Matthew said, "Probably from the person who just left."
