Chapter 52 Uninvited
When he came back last night, it was already very late, and no one in the old mansion was awake.
How would Susan know he was drunk?
"This hangover soup..." He instinctively looked toward the staircase.
Susan smiled kindly. "Emily specially asked me to make this last night. She said you had been drinking and would feel uncomfortable in the morning."
Suddenly, a trace of warmth crossed Alex's stern face.
He took the thermos, feeling the warmth through his fingertips, and even the tension around him eased a bit.
After getting in the car, the assistant noticed Alex's unusually gentle expression and said quietly. "Mr. Baker, if you can't let her go, just talk to her properly. Mrs. Baker still has feelings for you deep down. Last time I came over, she might have just been in a bad mood."
"Maybe..."
Alex shot him a cold glance. "Shut up."
The assistant was too scared to say more and quietly closed his mouth.
The car headed toward the company.
Alex wearily pressed his temples.
He knew she no longer had him in her heart.
Last night's test...
Alex's thin lips pressed together slightly, radiating coldness.
Want a divorce?
Not that easy.
Emily was the one who chased after him first!
At this moment, Emily didn't wake up until late morning.
She had a splitting headache. Already sleeping poorly due to pregnancy, and then disturbed by Alex like that, she hadn't slept well at all.
Thinking about last night's events, she couldn't help but feel angry.
The divorce agreement was signed, the process was underway, and only now he thinks of coming back?
Too late for the soup to even be warm!
She had been the one chasing after him for three years. She was tired of it.
What's more... the baby in Grace's belly was even further along than hers.
Continuing the marriage would just be a joke.
Emily pushed away her thoughts, changed clothes and went downstairs, her calm face showing nothing. However, just as she was about to go downstairs, her phone rang.
Emily glanced at the caller ID and smiled warmly. "Hello, Dad?"
"Emmie, there's a family dinner tonight, with some important business partners. Come with Alex."
"Let's make it lively." Andrew's kind voice came through.
Emily hesitated. "Okay, we'll come tonight."
Andrew was pleased. "Don't force Alex, see if he has time."
To this, Emily just casually agreed. The divorce was already in progress and couldn't be hidden for long.
Might as well take this opportunity to tell her parents the truth.
At a family dinner, her father could always talk with her in the study.
That way, they could be mentally prepared in advance.
After hanging up, Emily went downstairs, just in time for lunch. "Grandma, did you take your medicine this morning? I got up a bit late and forgot to remind you."
After speaking, she poured two glasses of lemon water and brought them over.
Margaret saw the dark circles under her eyes and felt even more sorry for her, holding her hand and saying. "Emmie, you need to take care of yourself. Why have you lost weight these past few days?"
"It's all that brat not knowing how to cherish you. It's his loss!"
"In the future, our Emmie will find a man a hundred times, a thousand times better than him, and make him regret it!"
Emily didn't know whether to laugh or cry. What grandmother talks about her own grandson like this?
She gently patted the old lady's hand. "Grandma, I just want to focus on work right now. I don't want to think about these things for the time being."
"Okay, okay, if you don't want to think about it, then don't." Margaret smiled, "Anyway, Grandma supports you. Whatever decision you make, Grandma is on your side."
Emily's eyes slightly reddened, and she leaned her head on her grandmother's shoulder. "Grandma, you're so good to me."
The old lady's voice also became choked up. "You're a good child..."
Suddenly, Emily remembered something and pressed her lips together.
The divorce procedures were progressing, and it probably wouldn't be long before they were completed.
To avoid more awkwardness with Alex, she was silent for a moment. "Grandma, I'm planning to move out. The process is almost done, and it's not appropriate for me to stay at the old mansion."
Who knew the old lady would immediately object, putting down her knife and fork. "Emmie, if you leave, who will keep this old bag of bones company?"
"Besides, you need to take better care of yourself now. If you move out, you'll have to find a new housekeeper, and you definitely won't be used to their cooking."
"Don't you love Susan's cooking? Grandma can't bear to part with you and wants to see you more. Just stay a few more days, okay?"
"Wait until the divorce is finalized, then you can leave."
The old lady's trump card was acting cute and pitiful.
But in the end, her heart softened, and she nodded. "Alright."
After all, she had just gotten pregnant, and the baby's condition wasn't stable.
She already ate little, and if the food didn't suit her taste, the baby would get even less nutrition.
Susan's cooking was indeed good, and besides, she couldn't bear to leave the old lady alone.
Margaret was immediately happy when she agreed.
After lunch, Emily returned to her room to continue working.
The Paris headquarters was pressing hard, and she had to finish quickly.
Working online was already a special situation, and if she couldn't submit on time, the supervisor there might have opinions.
Emily held a cup of hot milk, inspiration flowing.
Before she knew it, evening had arrived. When the phone alarm went off, Emily let out a tired breath. "Time flies so fast."
She got up and went to the closet, picking out an appropriate dress.
The dress was cleverly designed, with flowing gauze tassels at the waist perfectly concealing her slightly protruding belly.
Emily went downstairs and saw Susan. "I'm going home for a bit. I'll be back later."
Susan was a bit stunned. "What about Alex..."
Emily pressed her lips together. "He's probably at the company. I don't really know the specifics."
After speaking, she had the driver take her directly to the Johnson family home.
Susan was right - she hadn't called Alex.
After all, her father hadn't said Alex absolutely had to go.
Half an hour later.
As soon as Emily arrived at the door, she saw several luxury cars parked at the villa.
Looked like quite a few people were coming tonight.
Suddenly, she stopped in her tracks.
Emily looked in disbelief at the black Cayenne in the middle.
How did he get here too?
She definitely hadn't called him!
Did her father call him?
Oh no, Emily's heart sank.
If Alex still pretended they were a loving couple, how could she say what she needed to say?
A servant saw her standing at the door and hurried out. "Miss, your husband arrived long ago and is inside talking with the guests."
"When did he get here?" Emily frowned.
The servant thought for a moment. "Just before and after you, not much time apart."
Emily was so angry she gritted her teeth and walked straight in wearing her heels.
The door was pushed open, and the originally lively banquet hall quieted for a moment.
The woman walking toward them had a delicate face but a gentle, graceful air about her.
The off-white dress made her skin look even more flawless.
Alex, sitting in the center position, narrowed his eyes.
Andrew was chatting and laughing with several business partners. "Emmie's here, come sit."
"Everyone here is family today, no need to be formal."
Suddenly, Alex stood up and walked step by step toward the door.
