Chapter 41 Grandma Slaps Grace
After a few seconds, Grace finally spoke up in a wronged tone. "Grandma, Alex and I have a really good relationship. I'm in so much pain right now, I had no choice but to..."
"Good relationship?" Margaret let out a cold laugh. "Then tell me what kind of relationship requires you to call my grandson over for a stomachache? Alex is married. Don't you know to keep your distance? Shameless, deliberately trying to upset our Emmie?"
On the other end of the phone, Grace's nails were practically digging into her palms.
She defended herself through gritted teeth. "That's not it, Grandma. I don't know why you have such a deep prejudice against me. Did Miss Johnson say something to you?"
Margaret didn't mince words. "Emmie is the only young Mrs. Baker—you have no right to interfere. If you're hurt, go to the hospital. Don't you have parents to take care of you? Stop bothering my grandson! And if you dare pester Alex again, I'll expose every scheme of yours. Let's see what you're really after."
Grace stammered from the scolding. "Grandma, you've misunderstood. Alex and I are just..."
Margaret didn't listen to her protests at all and immediately turned to glare at Alex. "What are you waiting for? Hang up!"
Alex's mouth twitched.
If he didn't hang up, the old lady would smash his car.
He simply tapped the screen, and the call ended directly.
The car fell into dead silence.
Alex pressed his thin lips together, wanting to say something for Grace, but was swept by Margaret's threatening gaze and ultimately swallowed his words.
Grandma's health wasn't good right now. He'd talk about it later.
Emily saw her chest heaving with anger and quickly comforted her. "Grandma, it's okay. Miss Miller's health really is weak. It's appropriate for Alex to go check on her."
Margaret's tone softened as she patted the back of her hand. "We won't bother with this shameless woman. If a certain someone dares to get involved with her, I'll be the first to deal with him!"
After speaking, she glared at Alex through the rearview mirror.
Emily pulled out a faint smile and said nothing more.
She genuinely didn't care.
Grace's tricks were nothing more than a clown's performance in her eyes.
However... Emily paused slightly, her gaze inadvertently sweeping across Alex's profile.
His angular face was cold and stern, his sharp jawline revealing a hint of displeasure.
Clearly his mood had hit rock bottom.
Emily sneered inwardly, too lazy to pay attention.Suddenly, Emily's phone rang.
She looked down and saw it was a call from Paris headquarters. They would never make such an urgent call unless something was up.
Emily's expression turned serious. "Grandma, I need to take this call."
Margaret didn't mind at all, smiling and blinking. "Emmie, go ahead and take it. I guarantee no one will disturb you."
Emily smiled and answered, greeting in fluent French.
Alex looked at her, his eyes showing surprise.
He hadn't expected her French pronunciation to be so pure.
On the other end, the design director's voice was urgent. "Designer Johnson, the client has temporarily added three design requirements. We need you to communicate and confirm online now."
"We've already set up the meeting group. The video conference will start in twenty minutes."
The sound of keyboard typing could be heard on the other end.
Emily glanced out the window. They weren't far from the small apartment she'd bought before marriage. She immediately agreed. "No problem. I'll be online in fifteen minutes. Send the documents with the new requirements to my email first."
After hanging up, she hesitated for a moment, then turned to explain to Margaret. "Grandma, I have an urgent work matter that needs handling. I might not be able to go back with you."
Linda snorted coldly. "What work is so urgent? I think you're just making excuses because you don't want to live properly."
"Say less." Margaret scolded sharply, then said gently to Emily. "Emmie, go handle your work quickly, don't delay it. I'll have Susan call the driver to pick us up. Alex will take you home."
Emily glanced at Alex. Seeing he didn't refuse, she nodded. "Thank you, Grandma."
Ten minutes later.
Alex took her back to her apartment.
This was what Emily had bought before marriage. Alex had no idea about it and naturally had never been there.
In the elevator, Emily kept checking the time anxiously. "I have a meeting soon. Don't talk, but you can also just go back to the company."
Alex raised an eyebrow slightly. "No rush."
Emily glanced over speechlessly. What's wrong with him.
The elevator chimed as it arrived. She didn't have time for small talk. She entered the password and walked into the living room.
In front of the bright floor-to-ceiling windows was a workstation. She immediately turned on the desktop computer.
Emily opened her email to receive the files and prepared to log into the meeting software.
Alex stood at the door, unhurriedly entering, his dark eyes sweeping around.
The decor was very simple, bright and clean everywhere, with a beige knitted blanket draped over the sofa.
The bookshelf was filled with design books and thick award certificates.
By the floor-to-ceiling window, there were several thriving potted plants.
Compared to the coldness of the Baker family home, this place, though not large, felt more like a real home.
Alex sat on the sofa, his long legs slightly bent.
Emily felt his burning gaze and uncomfortably tucked her hair behind her ear, but didn't have the mind to pay much attention.
The video conference began.
Emily sat up straight. "Regarding the client's new inlay requirements, I suggest using cold enamel technique. It can ensure texture while fitting the overall design style..."
Her cool voice was methodical, and the suggestions she gave were extremely crucial.
She exuded the unique charm of a professional woman, completely different from her usual appearance at the Baker family home.
Alex's eyes deepened as he watched her quietly, his dark eyes unconsciously sweeping across the computer screen.
Paris?
He remembered that the design company Emily had previously worked with... had its headquarters domestically.
How could she be interfacing with Paris?
Half an hour later, Emily leaned back in her chair. "Phew... finally done."
A low voice came from behind. "You're working with a company in Paris?"
In an instant, Emily's hand froze as she was drinking water.
Oh no!
How could she have forgotten Alex was here too?
Emily furrowed her delicate brows. She'd been too focused on work and had forgotten about him.
She absolutely couldn't let Alex know she was going to Paris...
She forced herself to stay calm and gave a perfunctory answer. "There's an overseas project that requires coordination with the team there."
Alex said. "Is that so? What overseas project? The Baker family also has investments in the design field. I can help you look into..."Before he could continue questioning, Emily's phone suddenly vibrated.
She glanced at the screen and immediately got up to pack.
Alex looked up at her. "Where are you going?"
Emily grabbed her coat and started changing shoes, while pushing him toward the door. "My alma mater has a last-minute event, and there's an afterparty. I need to get there quickly."
But before she could push him out, Alex braced one hand against the doorframe with a half-smile. "What's the rush? I'm also an alumnus. Of course I'm on the invitation list too."
Emily paused, looking at him in surprise. "You're going too?"
