Chapter 28 Alex: Rolling Off Matthew's Car
Alex suddenly let out a cold laugh, his tongue pressing against his teeth, his eyes dark and gloomy.
It seemed this woman hadn't taken his warning to heart at all.
In the car, Emily pressed her lips together in silence, still feeling the lingering warmth of his fingertips on her waist.
As annoying as the man himself.
She really couldn't understand why Alex would put on this loving act in front of others when they were already getting divorced.
Could it be the domineering possessiveness inherent in men?
"Still thinking about your father's matter? Or worried Alex might read too much into it?" Matthew noticed her frown deepening and asked with concern in a gentle voice.
"Ah! No." Emily snapped back to reality, pressed her brow, and denied it.
She didn't care what Alex thought.
Matthew chuckled, his warm voice coming again. "Emmie, Mark Anderson is an extremely cunning man with underhanded methods. This time he's deliberately making things difficult for the Johnson family - I'm afraid it won't be resolved with simple talks. It'll likely end up in court, probably a prolonged battle. You need to be mentally prepared."
"But don't worry, no matter what, he has to give me some face."
When it came to schemes and cunning, he wasn't necessarily inferior to Alex or Mark.
Hearing this, Emily's fingertips tightened slightly.
If it really went to court, it would be all harm and no benefit for them.
"I understand, thank you, Matthew. No matter what, I have to try." Emily's voice was weary but still strong.
Matthew glanced at her pale face, felt a pang of heartache, and after hesitating, couldn't help but ask. "Emmie, what's really going on between you and Alex? From how he acted just now, he doesn't seem to want a divorce."
The question was like a stone thrown into a lake, creating ripples.
Emily's body stiffened imperceptibly. She slowly lowered her eyes and answered honestly. "We've already discussed it, just haven't gone through the procedures yet."
"I see!" Matthew tactfully didn't ask further, unconsciously gripping the steering wheel tighter, his mind stirring.
Meanwhile.
On the other side.
The atmosphere in the car was so oppressive it was suffocating.
Alex leaned back against his seat with an air of nobility, a lit cigarette between his fingers, his face frighteningly dark.
A dangerous aura ready to explode at any moment.
"Mr. Baker." The assistant swallowed nervously and said carefully. "Mark Anderson does have some evidence against the Johnson family. Should we approach him? I heard Mr. Moore is also mediating."
Alex slowly lifted his eyes, his gaze obscure and unreadable.
He scoffed lightly. "Ha, no need! Go to the Walton family."
This matter needed someone to mediate.
And that person could only be Luke Walton, who had deep ties with both the Baker family and the Johnson family.
As long as Luke was willing to step in, this matter would mostly be resolved easily.
Much more convenient than going to that Mark Anderson.
And yet that brainless Emily would rather ask others for help than humble herself before him.
At this thought, the anger Alex had barely suppressed showed signs of reigniting.
-
Here, Matthew's car had just left the city when his phone rang.
He glanced at the caller ID, his expression changing slightly. "Hello."
Seeing him like this, Emily in the passenger seat felt her heart tighten.
She didn't know who was on the other end, but could vaguely hear a sinister, hoarse voice.
Before she could hear anything clearly, the call was disconnected.
Matthew's brow gradually furrowed, his gentle jade-like face showing a hint of surprise.
Emily asked softly. "Matthew, did something happen?"
Matthew pulled the car over to the roadside with a grave expression, "Mark Anderson suddenly changed his mind and rejected the dinner. And... he's also withdrawn all commercial pressure on the Johnson family."
Emily froze, her face full of disbelief.
How could this be?
She had just been worried about a prolonged battle, and now things had turned around?
This good news came too suddenly, leaving her at a loss.
"Really?" she asked, her tone carrying a hint of urgent confirmation.
Matthew put aside his contemplation and nodded.
Mark was definitely not the type to pass up such a money-making opportunity.
Who could possibly have intervened?
Or... had something happened to the Anderson family?
He couldn't figure it out, his brow furrowed so tightly it could crush a fly.
"Matthew, thank you. It's probably because of you that Mark decided to let the Johnson family go."
Emily couldn't think of any other reason.
Matthew was about to explain when Emily's phone rang, interrupting what he was going to say.
No name saved.
But looking at that string of numbers she could recite backwards, Emily's smile slowly faded, and she ultimately chose to answer.
"What is it." Her voice was cold.
Alex didn't mind, his tone commanding. "I'm giving you ten minutes. Get out of Matthew's car."
"Alex, what are you going crazy about? Why should I listen to you?"
"Because we're not divorced yet!" Alex's tone was as domineering and unreasonable as always. "Get out and come find me at the company. You're coming with me to a banquet."
A banquet?
Emily immediately recalled the last Baker family gathering, Grace's triumphant appearance, and felt her stomach churn.
"What, you want me to be a backdrop for you and Grace again? Sorry, I'm not interested in fighting over men with others, and even less interested in playing along with your act."
"Emily!" Alex said, "What's going through your head? Tonight is a business banquet at Luke's!"
Luke Walton?
Emily's heart skipped a beat.
She naturally knew the weight this business titan carried.
But thinking about attending the banquet with Alex as husband and wife made her feel uncomfortable all over.
Emily wearily pressed her brow. "Fine."
She hung up.
Turning to Matthew, she said apologetically. "I'm sorry, Matthew. Thank you for today. I have something else to take care of. Could you drop me off at the intersection ahead?"
Matthew could see her difficulty. His lashes lowered, concealing the turbulent undercurrents in his eyes. When he looked up again, he smiled gently. "It's okay. I'll continue following up on Andrew's case. I'll let you know immediately if there are any developments."
"Thank you, Matthew." Emily felt a warm current flow through her heart, then pushed open the car door and got out.
This place wasn't far from Baker Corporation.
Two hours later.
Emily sat in Alex's car, already changed into the dress he had someone bring, along with jewelry.
In the car cabin, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Emily turned her head to look out the window, too lazy to talk to him.
Alex was messaging Grace, also not making a sound.
In front of the Walton family estate.
Red brick exterior walls, white columns, exquisite wrought iron gates - everything exuded understated luxury and the dignity of old aristocracy.
"Get out." Alex said.
"Mm." Emily smoothed her skirt, but just as she steadied herself, a large hand skillfully wrapped around her slender waist.
Emily's body stiffened, instinctively wanting to dodge.
This dress she was wearing today had an exposed waist design!
