Chapter 19 Knowingly Breaking the Rules

Chapter 19 Knowingly Breaking the Rules

Emily was at a loss for words. This man was really shameless.

Though unwilling, she was just too tired and couldn't be bothered to deal with him.

Emily lifted a corner of the blanket and lay down far away from him.

There was enough space between them to fit another person. The air was filled with nothing but distance.

Just then, Alex's phone vibrated.

The name "Grace" on the screen was so glaring.

Alex got up and walked to the balcony to answer the call.

Whatever was said on the other end made Alex anxious."I'll come right away, don't move."

After hanging up, he changed clothes, grabbed his jacket and left.

Before leaving, he glanced at Emily on the bed, but ultimately didn't stay.

The door closed.

Emily opened her eyes, showing no emotion whatsoever.

She was used to it by now, wasn't she?

Besides, Alex's departure was actually a relief for her.

At least she could get a good night's sleep.

The next morning.

When Emily got up, she glanced at the other side of the bed - it was cold.

No one had slept there.

Alex had spent the whole night at Grace's place, which was expected.

She didn't dwell on it, got up to wash up, and even made some light soup for her grandmother to help her recover.

Seeing it was getting late, Emily hurried to the hospital.

The morning sunlight streamed through the hospital room window, adding some color to Margaret's pale face.

Emily smiled as soon as she walked in."Grandma, we can eat after the blood draw."

After all, Margaret was getting old and needed various tests done daily.

The old lady smiled kindly and waved at her."Come here, Emmie, sit by Grandma. With you here, I'm not afraid of those needles."

Emily didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Despite her privileged upbringing and noble status, the old lady had a child's temperament - playful and afraid of needles.

Even the Baker family's doctor couldn't do anything about it.

Ten minutes later.

Emily blew on the soup to cool it."Grandma, have something to eat. I'll feed you."

Margaret took a sip, smiling."Emmie's cooking is the best, so much better than store-bought..."

As they were talking, the hospital room door was gently pushed open.

Grace walked in carrying an elegant fruit basket."Grandma, I came to see you. How are you feeling?"

This time she wasn't being flashy, instead wearing a simple pink dress that made her look gentle and pleasant.

She walked to the bedside with just the right amount of concern on her face.

Margaret's expression immediately turned cold, and she snorted."Thanks to you, I'm not dead yet."

Grace's smile froze, her heart burning with anger, then she looked back awkwardly and pitifully."Alex, I..."

Alex came in carrying two boxes of expensive supplements."Grandma just got better, her emotions are unstable, don't take it personally."

Grace showed a smile, "Yeah! It's okay, I understand."

How understanding.

Suddenly, Emily frowned. This smell was...

Her expression changed slightly, her eyes falling on the fruit basket Grace was carrying.

The basket was filled with expensive fruits, exquisite and brightly colored.

But there were two mangoes in it!

The strong mango scent couldn't be hidden.

The moment Emily saw the mangoes, she instinctively took a step back.

She had been severely allergic to mangoes since childhood - mild reactions caused red, swollen, itchy skin, severe ones caused breathing difficulties.

As a child, she once ate a small piece of mango by mistake and spent half a month in the hospital.

Later, she had mentioned it to Alex, but was accused of being delicate and making a big fuss over nothing.

She didn't care about the past.

But now she was pregnant and absolutely couldn't have an allergic reaction!

Grace bringing mangoes made her intentions crystal clear.

At this moment, Grace smiled gently."Miss Johnson is here too, that's great. Alex and I specially selected imported fruits for this custom basket, thinking it would give Grandma some vitamins."

As she spoke, she tried to hand it to Emily.

Emily's eyes turned cold as she stepped aside."Grandma can't eat high-sugar foods right now, thank you."

She had no intention of taking it, leaving Grace's hand frozen in mid-air. "Really? But I remember Alex saying that Miss Johnson likes mangoes. Why don't you try some for Grandma?"

As she spoke, she moved the mango closer, the strong fruity scent almost reaching Emily's nose.

Emily couldn't take it anymore and pushed her arm away, "I said I won't eat it!"

Grace was caught off guard, the fruit basket fell to the ground, and her hand turned red.

Alex frowned."Grace was being kind giving you fruit, and this is your attitude?"

In his view, Emily was clearly being difficult on purpose.

Because he didn't come home last night, she was angry?

Emily had had enough."Well, I'm being kind too - would you eat garlic powder if I gave it to you!"

Alex."You're doing this on purpose?"

He couldn't stand the smell of garlic and never ate it.

Margaret couldn't watch anymore."Both of you shut up! Emmie is allergic to mangoes, Alex, how can you not remember that? As for Miss Miller's fruit basket, this old woman doesn't deserve it. Take it back and eat it for your pregnancy."

Grace's smile almost cracked.

If it weren't for trying to score points with Alex, she wouldn't have come!

Alex frowned.

Emily was allergic to mangoes?

He had indeed forgotten.

At this moment, Grace lowered her head guiltily."I'm so sorry, Miss Johnson. It's all my fault for being careless."

Emily couldn't even be bothered to look at her and continued helping Margaret with her soup.

Her own husband couldn't remember what she was allergic to, let alone the mistress.

Emily felt her heart being squeezed by invisible hands, making it hard to breathe.

The atmosphere in the room became awkward.

After the old lady finished eating, Emily tucked the blanket around her."Grandma, I'm going out for a bit. Rest well."

With that, she walked out of the room and took out her phone to call Andrew.

In the hallway, Emily's voice carried urgency."Dad, is something wrong with the family company?"

Alex's words from yesterday kept echoing in her mind.

She was worried.

On the other end, Andrew was silent for a moment before saying casually."Nothing major, just a small problem that's already been solved. Don't worry."

"Is it really solved?" Emily didn't believe him. "Did Alex help? Dad, tell me the truth, or I won't feel at ease."

Andrew's tone was deliberately light."Yes, Alex has helped a lot. Emmie, stop worrying and take care of yourself."

No matter how much Emily pressed, Andrew refused to reveal details, just kept telling her to relax.

After hanging up, Emily's frown deepened.

The more he acted this way, the more uneasy she felt.

The family company must have encountered serious trouble. Otherwise, Dad wouldn't have asked Alex for help unless absolutely necessary!

Thinking of this, Emily sent Alex an iMessage.

Right now, if she wanted to know the truth, she could only ask Alex!
