Chapter 16 Throw Away the Flowers and Jewelry He Gave
I still think Emily is that cheap - she can be bought off with a bouquet of flowers and some jewelry.
"I don't need them. Take them back." Emily's face turned cold. After speaking, she moved to close the door.
However, someone blocked it. The man looked troubled, "Miss Johnson, we were specifically instructed to deliver these. We can't really explain if..."
"That's your problem, not mine."
Emily's tone was firm as she shut the door directly.
She didn't accept the flowers or the jewelry, didn't even give them a second glance.
Those so-called expensive gifts meant nothing to her.
The two men at the door looked at each other, completely at a loss.
"What... how do we report this?"
After hesitating for a moment, one of them had no choice but to report truthfully.
At that time, Alex was still downstairs. After hearing the report, he fell into an eerie silence.
The assistant was cautious, barely daring to breathe, and asked nervously, "Boss, then these things..."
Alex's thin lips pressed together, then he suddenly let out a cold laugh, "Since she doesn't care for them, take them back to the Baker family villa. Grace happens to need a jewelry set."
With that, he hung up.
If she doesn't want them, someone else will!
Cigarette butts had piled up at Alex's feet. He then drove off directly.
He must be crazy - he actually waited for Emily downstairs at this shabby apartment building for so long!
Meanwhile, upstairs.
Emily slowly lowered the curtain she had lifted, the ripples in her eyes settling back to calm. "He should have left long ago anyway."
She never asked Alex to wait here.
Judging from the sound of the car engine just now, he was probably angry.
But whatever - it had nothing to do with her anyway.
Emily continued working on her design sketches, waiting for her food delivery, as if nothing had just happened.
An hour later.
Rachel came back, furiously throwing her bag on the sofa. "I'm so mad! What's that woman showing off for? Two-faced! They're just flowers and jewelry - acting like she's never seen anything like it in her life!"
Emily looked up at her words, couldn't help but find it amusing. "Who got you this worked up?"
Rachel pulled up a picture and enlarged it. "Grace! Who else? Look at her smug face!"
She was so frustrated her heart felt tight.
Emily looked and her gaze froze.
This was...
She looked at Rachel's social media feed, her pupils contracting.
There was a bright, glaring photo.
Grace was half-leaning on a sofa, wearing on her wrist the exact custom jewelry set that Alex had his assistant deliver.
The diamonds sparkled with a blinding light.
Her fingertips gently caressed the jewelry, her belly slightly rounded. The caption was even more direct and provocative: [Thanks for Alex's thoughtfulness, love it so much~ The feeling of being treasured, it's really wonderful.]
The pictures included not only close-ups of the jewelry, but also the roses Emily had refused.
They were placed on the coffee table beside Grace, making her look even more delicate.
"Look at that face of hers!" Rachel got angrier as she spoke, jabbing her finger at the screen. "So smug - she really thinks she's the legitimate wife!"
Emily's face showed little expression, but her stomach churned violently, nausea surging up her throat!
She suddenly covered her mouth and rushed to the bathroom.
Once inside, she held onto the toilet, dry heaving continuously, her stomach cramping.
In just moments, her face turned deathly pale.
Rachel was startled. "Emmie, are you okay? Don't get upset, don't get upset - these people aren't worth it, and you have the baby to think about!"
After a long while, Emily finally leaned against the wall to catch her breath. "I'm fine."
But the disgust in her heart was worse than her physical discomfort!
Grace's showing off was like a needle, making her chest tighten.
It wasn't about the jewelry - it was disgust at Alex's casual dismissiveness.
"It's my fault, I shouldn't have shown you this." Rachel was full of regret. "That woman is just a clown - let's ignore her!"
Emily nodded.
She knew Rachel was right, but Grace's triumphant look still made her feel awful.
Rachel looked at her with concern, then suddenly had an idea. "Staying cooped up inside is depressing - let me take you out to clear your head!"
"What?"
Before Emily could ask more, Rachel pulled her out the door.
An hour later.
A tranquil club nestled halfway up the mountain, surrounded by hills and water, truly peaceful and secluded.
The two found a table by the window and ordered some light herbal cuisine and desserts.
Rachel smiled, "Try this chia seed pudding - it's rich in omega-3, good for both pregnant women and babies. Stop thinking about those annoying things. Once you get to Paris, out of sight, out of mind."
"Okay!" Emily scooped up a spoonful of chia seed pudding.
The sweet taste melted on her tongue, and the knot in her heart loosened a bit.
Just as the two were chatting and laughing, a familiar figure appeared in the club lobby.
Alex was accompanying several business partners inside, wearing a sharp black suit, his expression cold.
He had been listening to the person beside him talking, his gaze sweeping casually, but when he saw that figure, he suddenly froze.
Why is she here?
Alex's eyes fell on Emily - beige long dress, hair down on the side, a hint of leisure in her features.
Exquisite afternoon tea was laid out on the table, looking relaxed and pleasant.
A nameless fire instantly surged in Alex's chest.
She actually has the mood to enjoy herself here?
Ha, truly heartless.
Could it be that divorce was actually a relief for her, even something worth celebrating?
Alex's handsome face darkened, the pressure around him dropping to a frightening level.
Emily, you're really something.
Three years of marriage, cut off just like that, and she can still be this carefree and happy.
Meanwhile, Andrew came over with the business partners.
Andrew had been worried about business obstacles, but unexpectedly ran into Alex here. He immediately smiled and approached, "Alex, didn't expect to see you here."
Alex paused, replied coolly, "Yes."
"Mr. Baker, you and Mr. Johnson are?" The business partner noticed their familiarity, his tone full of flattery.
Alex withdrew his cold gaze from Emily. "Father-in-law."
The business partner gasped, his expression immediately changing, fawning, "So you're Mr. Baker's father-in-law, good, good, good! Andrew, why didn't you say so earlier! Come to my company tomorrow, we'll sign on the spot!"
Being able to connect with Alex was something countless people would kill for.
If he did Alex this favor today, Alex would surely return it later.
The value would definitely be even higher!
"Great!" Andrew knew it was because of Alex that he could close the deal, but following his line of sight, he saw his own daughter.
Thinking they had come together, he was even happier.
Looks like Emmie didn't lie to him - the two of them get along well.
Andrew's smile deepened. "Emmie."
Suddenly hearing someone call her, Emily turned around abruptly.
She immediately saw her father smiling and waving at her.
Emily's face brightened with a smile. "Dad, what are you doing here?"
After speaking, she said something to Rachel and walked over.
However, as she got closer, she saw Alex was there too. The smile on Emily's face stiffened.
Andrew was beaming, what could be better than seeing his daughter and son-in-law getting along?
He immediately waved his hand grandly, "Since we've run into each other, Alex, do you have time to have dinner together later?"
Emily knew Alex would definitely refuse, and didn't want her father to be humbled in front of him. She pressed her lips together, about to say something, when Alex spoke first, "Sure."
Though his tone was polite, it carried a sense of distance.
Then without giving Emily another glance, he turned and walked toward the private room with the business partners.
Leaving Andrew happy in place.
The young couple getting along well, and the company project moving forward smoothly.
How wonderful!
But Emily furrowed her delicate brows, her eyes full of confusion.
This wasn't like Alex at all!
