Moonlit Promises

James and I stepped out into the moonlit courtyard. The cool night air embraced us. The castle grounds were alive with the sounds of celebration. The clinking of goblets, laughter, and the soft hum of music drifted from the ballroom where guests were already beginning to gather for the wedding feast.

Torches lined the pathway, their flames dancing in the gentle breeze, casting flickering shadows across the cobblestones. In the distance, the silhouette of the castle loomed, its towers piercing the night sky like dark sentinels. The soft glow of lanterns illuminated the gardens beyond, where clusters of guests mingled, their faces bright with joy and anticipation.

My hand remained firmly clasped in James's as we walked side by side. Though the ceremony had brought us closer, the reality of what lay ahead loomed like a storm on the horizon. I glanced up at him, catching the glint of moonlight in his deep blue eyes. For a moment, I allowed myself to be lost in the comfort of his presence. That comfort was fleeting. The weight of our responsibilities, of our vows not just to each other but to the kingdom, pressed down on me like a heavy cloak.

"I can hear them already," James said softly, his voice breaking the silence as we walked.

He nodded toward the ballroom, where the faint sound of music and lively conversation filtered out into the night.

"The nobles, the lords."

"All here to celebrate, but half of them are likely already plotting."

I squeezed his hand, my gaze steady.

"Let them plot.”

“We’ll deal with them when the time comes."

We reached the edge of the courtyard, where a large fountain stood at its center. The water glimmering silver under the moonlight. The sound of the cascading water filled the quiet, providing a brief respite from the noise of the celebration beyond. James paused, his brow furrowing slightly.

"I just wonder if they truly see us for what we are.”

“Do they see a couple bound by love, or two leaders bound by duty?”

“Sometimes, I fear the latter weighs heavier in their minds."

I turned to face him, my expression softening.

"They might see duty, but we know the truth.”

“We’re more than just symbols, James.”

“We’re people, too.”

“People who love each other.”

“That love is what gives us the strength to face what’s coming."

He smiled at me, a small, genuine smile that reached his eyes.

"You always know what to say."

Before I could respond, the sound of approaching footsteps drew our attention. A figure emerged from the shadows of the castle. A royal guard, his armor gleaming in the moonlight. He stopped a few paces away and bowed deeply.

"Your Highness," he said, his voice low and respectful.

"The feast is about to begin.”

“The guests await your entrance."

I exchanged a glance with James. For a brief moment, we stood together in silence, savoring the last few moments of peace before returning to the obligations awaiting us.

"Thank you," James replied to the guard, nodding.

The guard bowed again and retreated toward the entrance of the ballroom. With a deep breath, I stepped closer to James, my hand resting on his arm as we prepared to make our entrance.

"Are you ready for this?"

James chuckled softly, though there was an edge of tension to it.

"As ready as I’ll ever be."

Together, we walked back toward the grand hall. The large doors opened before us with a creak, and a burst of light, laughter, and music spilled out into the night. Inside, the ballroom was a spectacle of splendor. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, casting a soft glow over the sea of elegantly dressed guests. Tables were laden with extravagant feasts, platters of roasted meats, fruits, and delicacies that glistened under the candlelight.

As soon as we crossed the threshold, the room fell into a respectful silence. All eyes turned toward the newlyweds. The nobles rose from their seats, bowing their heads in deference to us. Whispers fluttered through the crowd, and I could feel the weight of a hundred gazes upon me, each one measuring me, judging me. James squeezed my hand slightly. A herald stepped forward, his voice booming over the crowd.

"Presenting Her Highness Princess Isabella and Sir James!"

The applause that followed was thunderous, echoing off the stone walls of the ballroom. James led me toward the head table, where we would sit as the honored guests, presiding over the evening’s celebrations. We passed through the crowd. I caught snippets of conversation—flattering compliments, political murmurs, and the ever-present undertones of curiosity and suspicion.

When we reached the dais, I settled into my chair, my gaze sweeping the room. The air was thick with tension, though it was masked by the revelry of the moment. Somewhere in the crowd were allies, but there were also enemies, hidden behind polite smiles and veiled words.

The feast began, and servants moved swiftly through the room, pouring wine and offering plates piled high with delicacies. I sipped my wine, barely tasting it. My mind already turning toward the challenges that awaited us after tonight. I could feel the undercurrent of unease beneath the surface of the celebration. This marriage had united us, but it had also painted a target on our backs. James leaned in close, his breath warm against my ear.

"Try to enjoy this night, even just a little."

"I’ll try."

A loud cheer erupted from the crowd as the first dance of the evening was announced. The musicians began to play a lively tune, and the guests rose from their seats, eager to join in the festivities. James rose from his chair and extended his hand to me, a playful smile on his lips.

"Shall we?"

For a moment, I hesitated. I took his hand, allowing him to pull me to my feet.

"Let’s dance," I said, pushing the worry to the back of my mind.

For tonight, we would dance and celebrate our union.
