CHAPTER 194

CHAPTER 194
"The Reckoning"

The silence in the grand chamber was so thick it could be sliced with a knife. Moonlight spilled through the floor-length windows, bathing the marble floors in silver. Ava stood at the heart of it, her fingers curled into trembling fists at her sides. The air around her pulsed with something raw, something on the edge of breaking.

Across from her, Liam Mateo stood like a man made of stone. But only Ava knew better, only she saw the storm behind those granite eyes.

"You lied to me," she said, her voice low and trembling. "All this time… you knew about Sophia’s second project. You knew she was creating another identity for herself. A backup."

Liam said nothing. He had no defense that could withstand the betrayal in Ava's voice. The documents she had found deep within his encrypted files spoke for themselves. Sophia Drake hadn’t just wanted power. She had planned for immortality. A second identity. A new name. One Ava had heard whispered in the underground network of corporate ghosts: Seraphina Voss.

“You said you were protecting me,” Ava whispered, the tears hot in her eyes. “But you were protecting her, too.”

Liam’s jaw clenched. “It wasn’t like that.”

“Then how was it?” she demanded, stepping closer. “Tell me. Because from where I’m standing, you’ve been playing both sides.”

His voice was a growl, low and pained. “I was trying to end her, Ava. I needed time. I needed her to believe I was still loyal, or she would’ve vanished before we could stop her.”

Ava’s breath hitched. She wanted to believe him. God, she wanted to. But how could she? After everything?

Behind her, the heavy oak doors creaked open, and Natalia strode in, flanked by two of Ava’s private guards. Her raven-black hair was swept into a severe bun, her expression unreadable.

“You summoned me,” she said coolly, glancing between Ava and Liam.

“I did.” Ava straightened. “It’s time.”

“For what?”

“For the reckoning.”

Natalia arched her brow. “You found her, didn’t you?”

Ava nodded. “She’s in Zurich, under the name Seraphina Voss. She’s not just hiding, she's building again. Funding new biogenetic weapons. She has control of the last satellite Liam said he destroyed.”

Liam flinched but said nothing.

Natalia took a breath. “Then we need to move fast.”

Ava stepped forward. “We’ll need everything, every operative, every drone, every ally still loyal. I want her erased. Not just from power, but from history.”

“You’ll need more than manpower for that,” Natalia said softly. “You’ll need to become her.”

Ava’s stomach turned. “What?”

“She built her empire on fear and precision. If we want to dismantle it from the inside, someone has to be her. Infiltrate. Sabotage. Ruin her from within. That someone can’t be me. It has to be you.”

For a moment, Ava saw the shadows of the past flicker in front of her. The girl she once was naïve, blinded by love, destroyed by betrayal. That girl was gone. In her place stood a woman forged by fire, vengeance, and loss.

“I’ll do it,” she said.

Liam’s voice broke through the tension. “No. You don’t know what she’ll do to you if she catches on. She’ll torture you. Break you.”

Ava turned to him, her voice quiet but sharp. “Then I’ll be unbreakable.”

He stepped toward her, his hands outstretched like he could shield her from the world. “Let me go instead.”

But Ava stepped back. “You already played your role, Liam. You had your chance. This is mine.”

The finality in her voice froze him in place. He wanted to scream, to beg, to kneel if he had to but the look in her eyes warned him: this wasn’t his war anymore. It was hers.

That night, Ava stood on the balcony of the private penthouse, watching the lights of the city blink like a thousand secrets. The wind whipped through her hair, and her hands trembled as she unwrapped the black velvet box Natalia had handed her.

Inside was a single ring, a device coded with encrypted biometric triggers. Once activated, it would mask her identity, scramble any digital trace of her, and let her become Seraphina Voss.

Ava slid it onto her finger. It felt cold. Final.

Behind her, a soft voice said, “You can still walk away.”

She turned. It was Julia, her assistant-turned-spy, whose loyalty had never once wavered.

“And let her rise again?” Ava asked. “Let her destroy more lives, erase more families, turn children into weapons?”

Julia shook her head. “No. But if you go down this path, there’s no coming back.”

Ava gave her a ghost of a smile. “There’s nothing left for me to come back to.”

She walked past her, her steps purposeful, each one closing the door on who she had been.

Zurich.

The city was crisp and quiet under the haze of snow, its clean streets a mask for the shadows crawling underneath. Ava, now Seraphina, walked into the lobby of one of Sophia’s shell corporations, dressed in black, her hair dyed to a platinum sheen, her makeup sharp and unfamiliar.

No one looked twice. The ring on her finger pulsed with silent signals. Doors opened. Files decrypted. Systems welcomed her as their new queen.

She climbed to the 42nd floor.

Inside, behind reinforced glass and digital firewalls, stood a woman Ava had not seen in almost a year. Not since the explosion that should have killed her. Not since the day Sophia Drake died.

But here she was, alive and reborn.

Sophia turned slowly in her chair, her eyes narrowing as they settled on Ava.

“You’re early,” she said, voice like silk laced with knives.

Ava smiled. “I like to be thorough.”

Sophia tilted her head. “I don’t remember authorizing a Seraphina clone.”

Ava stepped forward, calm and collected. “Because you didn’t. I’m the contingency you never saw coming.”

For a second, their eyes locked.

Power met power.

Shadow met shadow.

Then Sophia’s face shifted. Realization dawning. And horror.

“You,” she whispered. “You shouldn’t be alive.”

Ava smiled, cold and precise. “Surprise.”

She raised her hand and the lights in the room flickered as Ava’s hidden device activated every dormant Trojan inside Sophia’s network.

In a split second, the screens behind her turned to static. Vaults opened. Files transferred. Codes erased.

Sophia lunged but Ava was faster.

“I told you,” she hissed, grabbing Sophia by the throat. “This time, I came to win.”

Back in Manhattan, Liam sat at the edge of his bed, phone in hand. The last message from Ava was a single word: “Begin.”

He looked up. The storm had started.

And the woman he loved was now the sharpest weapon the world had ever known.

In Zurich, alarms blared. As Ava dragged a bound and furious Sophia into the core of the building, something flickered on the screen.

A file.

One she hadn’t opened.

PROJECT EREBUS: Contingency Protocol ACTIVE

And beneath it, a message in Sophia’s handwriting.

“Even if I fall, I rise again. You cannot kill what was born from vengeance.”

The building shook.

Ava’s eyes widened.

And behind her, a voice she hadn’t heard in years whispered:

“Hello, Ava. Did you miss me?”

Lucien Drake was alive. And he had just stepped back into the game.
