Chapter 38 Th3 Price of the Unbroken

Chapter 38 Th3 Price of the Unbroken
The storm rolled over the mountains like a living beast, its growl echoing through the ravine as Mira sprinted after Daelan and Ezra. The wind clawed at her cloak, whipping it sideways, and each breath felt sharp enough to slice her lungs open. The earth trembled beneath them whether from the thunder or the Sanctum’s machines closing in, she couldn’t tell.

What she did know was this:
If they didn’t reach the Riftspire in time, everything Jonas died for everything they had survived for would burn.

“Faster!” Ezra shouted ahead, voice nearly drowned by the storm’s roar. Lightning fractured the sky, illuminating the jagged cliff path. The Riftspire rose in the distance, a spiraling tower of broken stone and pulsing blue veins of ancient magic. It throbbed like a heartbeat, responding to Mira’s presence.

Daelan slowed just long enough to glance back at her. “You holding up?”

“Keep going,” she gasped. “I’m right behind you.”

That wasn’t entirely true. Her legs felt like they might fold beneath her at any second. The aftermath of the ritual in Chapter 37 still tore at her muscles, her magic raw and unsteady beneath her skin. She felt like a blade that had been sharpened too far one more strike and she might shatter.

But she kept running.

Because the Sanctum wasn’t the only threat.

The shadows that followed her were growing louder.

A hiss curled through the wind. Mira spun just in time to see three Lurkers those twisted remnants of Sanctum experiments crawling over the rocks behind them. Their bodies rippled with blackened veins, eyes glowing a sickly white.

Ezra cursed. “They’re faster in this weather!”

“Of course they are,” Daelan muttered.

The first Lurker leaped.

Daelan was already turning. His blade met the creature mid-air, slicing through its throat in a burst of dark vapor. The body crumpled, but the other two surged forward.

Mira thrust her hand out, summoning the flickering remnants of her power. Blue fire shot from her palm, but it sputtered unevenly strong one second, weak the next. The blast hit one Lurker, sending it tumbling backward.

The third reached her.

It slammed her onto the rocks, its claws digging into her shoulders. Mira screamed and drove her knee upward, catching it in the ribs. It screeched, jaws snapping at her face. She twisted, tried to summon more power

Nothing came.

“Mira!” Daelan lunged across the rocks, driving his blade into the creature’s spine. It went still instantly, collapsing over her like dead weight.

Daelan shoved it aside and grabbed her arm, pulling her up. His voice was tight with worry. “You’re burning yourself out. Slow down.”

“I can’t.” She wiped blood from her cheek. “If we stop, we die.”

Ezra pointed toward the Riftspire. “We’re close. Once inside, the Sanctum can’t track us. The wards will hold.”

Lightning boomed overhead as they pushed forward. The ground leveled slightly, opening into a small plateau at the base of the Riftspire. The entrance stood like a jagged mouth in the stone, glowing faintly blue.

But standing before it blocking it were six Sanctum Sentinels in full armor.

And behind them, cloaked in white, was a figure Mira had hoped never to see again:

High Inquisitor Seraxis.

Her heartbeat stuttered.

The storm seemed to coil around him, wind bending unnaturally as if obeying him alone. Seraxis lifted his head slowly, the mask covering his face carved with cold, merciless precision.

“Blood-heir Mira,” he said, voice amplified by magic. “Finally, you stop running.”

Ezra whispered, “This is bad.”

Daelan moved instinctively in front of Mira. “You’re not touching her.”

Seraxis tilted his head. “Your devotion is touching, Daelan. Misplaced but touching.”

Mira stepped forward before Daelan could stop her. “Why are you here? This place is forbidden even to the Sanctum.”

“It was,” Seraxis replied calmly. “Until you activated the ancient wards. Your power called to us.” His gaze sharpened behind the mask. “You carry the bloodline the Sanctum concealed. A lineage older than the Crown. Older than this world’s memory.”

Mira’s breath caught. “Jonas discovered the truth. That’s why you hunted him.”

“And why I must now end you,” Seraxis said.

The Sentinels drew their weapons.

Ezra murmured, “We can’t fight them all.”

“We don’t have to,” Daelan said. “We just need to get inside.”

But the entrance was blocked.

Seraxis raised his hand. “Surrender, Mira, and I will grant the others mercy.”

“No you won’t,” she said. “You don’t know what mercy means.”

His mask dipped. “Pity.”

He moved faster than thought wind bending, magic curling around his fingers. Mira braced, expecting death.

But Ezra slammed his staff into the ground, unleashing a shield of pure force. Seraxis’s attack crashed into it with a thunderous crack, sending shards of blue light flying.

Ezra staggered. “Move! Go!”

Daelan was already pulling Mira toward the right side of the plateau, searching for an opening. Sentinels advanced, blades crackling.

Mira gathered what remained of her power every stubborn spark left inside her and flung it at the ground.

The earth split.

A roar tore through the plateau as lightning surged from the crack she created, exploding upward and forcing the Sentinels to retreat momentarily.

Daelan’s eyes widened. “That was!”

“Painful,” she gasped. “Very painful.”

Ezra shouted, “NOW!”

They sprinted for the entrance.

Seraxis recovered quickly too quickly. He blurred forward, appearing in front of Mira like a ghost. She skidded to a stop, nearly colliding with him.

His voice lowered. “You cannot run from destiny.”

Mira raised her chin. “Watch me.”

Daelan’s blade flashed, slashing at Seraxis but the High Inquisitor vanished and reappeared behind him, striking Daelan across the back with a burst of white heat.

Daelan hit the ground hard.

“DAELAN!” Mira screamed.

Rage ignited inside her blue, violent, consuming. She threw herself between Seraxis and Daelan, summoning her power with a force she didn’t know she had left.

Magic erupted outward, a shockwave that cracked the stone beneath her feet and sent Seraxis sliding backward several meters.

He paused, stunned.

Ezra yelled, “The entrance GO!”

Mira grabbed Daelan’s arm, hauling him up despite his groan of pain. Together, they ran. Ezra covered them, launching blast after blast to keep the Sentinels back.

Seraxis extended his hand magic gathering But the Riftspire recognized Mira.

The entrance flared with brilliant blue light and pulled them inside.

The stone doors slammed shut behind them.

Silence fell.

Daelan slumped against the wall, breathing hard. Ezra collapsed beside him. Mira stood trembling in the center of the chamber, adrenaline fading, exhaustion consuming her.

But inside her chest, one truth burned brighter than all else:

Seraxis had confirmed it.

Her bloodline wasn’t a lie.
It was a weapon.

And every power in this world wanted to control it.
