Chapter 32 The Mirror that Fights Back
Chapter 32 The Mirror that Fights Back
Nyra stepped into the chamber, her pulse hammering like a living drum against her ribs. Blue fire licked the walls in spiraling veins, twisting upward like vines hungry for breath. At the center of the room stood the figure that looked like Aric same dark hair, same carved jawline, same broad shoulders tense in alert readiness.
But the eyes were wrong.
Silver instead of black.
Cold instead of fierce.
The Hollow King’s mimic watched her with a calm that felt like a blade pressed to her throat. “You’re trembling,” it observed, voice an echo of Aric’s but hollowed out. “Fear is the first truth you must admit.”
Nyra tightened her grip on her blade. “Fear isn’t a truth. It’s a path. And I’ve walked it long enough to know how to cut through it.”
The mimic tilted its head. “Bold. Aric would be proud.”
The smile that followed it made Nyra’s stomach knot—too perfect, too practiced, like her memories were being puppeteered.
“I’m not here to impress him,” she said sharply. “Move.”
“Can’t.” The mimic spread its arms as if welcoming her. “I am the next trial.”
The flames around them surged, casting shadows that danced like restless ghosts. Nyra steadied her breathing. “So you’re another illusion sent to break me.”
“No.” The mimic stepped closer. “I’m an illusion sent to reveal you. Everything you hide. Everything you fear he will learn.”
Nyra’s throat tightened. “He already knows my past.”
“Does he?”
The mimic’s silver gaze sharpened. “Does he know you feel unworthy of him? That you fear he’ll see how broken you really are? Does he know that every time he looks at you with trust, you feel like a fraud wearing borrowed courage?”
Nyra swallowed, hard. “Stop using his face.”
“Why?” The mimic stepped closer. “This is the face of the man who holds you like you’re something worth saving. The man who cares so deeply for you, it terrifies you.”
“Stop.” Nyra backed up until her shoulders hit the burning wall. Pain licked her skin. “You don’t get to use him against me.”
“I don’t need to.” The mimic’s voice softened, too familiar. “You already do.”
Her blade wavered. Just slightly. But enough.
The mimic’s eyes gleamed. “There it is. The crack.”
A blade of silver light formed in its hand. “Let’s widen it.”
Nyra pushed off the wall and attacked first.
Steel met shimmering illusion-blade with a violent clash that sent echoes screaming through the chamber. The mimic moved like Aric fast, grounded, precise. Every strike was familiar, every step a twisted reflection of their training. Fighting him felt like fighting the memory of every moment she trusted him with her guard down.
The mimic slid behind her with impossible speed, grazing her shoulder with its blade. Pain flared hot. “You hesitated,” it murmured. “Why?”
Nyra whipped around, swinging hard. “Because you stole his face.”
“And because you’re afraid to hurt him,” the mimic countered, parrying effortlessly. “Even when he’s the one obstacle between you and survival.”
“I’m not afraid of hurting Aric.”
The mimic laughed softly. “You’re afraid of loving him.”
Her breath caught. The mimic lunged. Nyra deflected, but her blade slipped for a heartbeat. That was all it needed. A brutal kick struck her ribs, knocking her to the floor.
Nyra gasped sharply as pain shot up her side.
The mimic crouched beside her, blade pressing to her throat. “Love is your weakness. Your soft spot. Your flaw.”
Nyra met its eyes, refusing to flinch. “No.”
“No?” The mimic leaned closer. “You lost Elias because you were too afraid to choose. Now you’re afraid to choose again. And Aric will suffer for it.”
Her hand trembled but only for a second.
“Don’t say his name.”
Her voice came out low. Dangerous.
“Why not?” the mimic whispered. “It’s the truth you keep avoiding. You lost once. You’ll lose again. And when you do, you will blame yourself because that is who you are.”
Nyra’s pulse roared in her ears. Not from fear. From fury.
Slowly, deliberately, she lifted her free hand and grabbed the mimic’s wrist. The silver eyes widened as she pushed the blade aside with a strength born from something deeper than anger.
“Wrong,” she hissed. “That’s who I used to be.”
In a burst of violent motion, she surged upward, knocking the mimic backward. Her blade slashed across its chest, spilling cracks of blinding light instead of blood. The mimic staggered, hands clutching the shimmering wound.
Nyra didn’t give it time to recover. She attacked again faster, harder, every strike fueled by the truth she had been running from and was finally ready to face.
“You think love breaks me?” she shouted, blade sparking against the mimic’s. “It’s the only thing that’s kept me fighting! Elias didn’t die because I loved him. He died because I wasn’t strong enough. But I am now.”
Her blade swept across the mimic’s arm. Light exploded.
“And you”
She drove her blade through its chest, pinning it to the floor.
“are nothing but a shadow pretending to know me.”
The mimic froze.
Its silver eyes flickered.
Then softened.
For the first time, it sounded almost like Aric when it whispered, “So you do love him.”
Nyra’s breath faltered. “Yes.”
The chamber pulsed around them, reacting to the truth like it was a spell being cast.
“I do,” she whispered again, steadier this time. “And I won’t let the Hollow King twist that into a weakness.”
The mimic’s face fractured like a cracked mirror. Light spilled through the breaking lines.
In a voice fading into nothing, it murmured, “Then you have already passed.”
The illusion shattered bursting into shards of silver that dissolved into mist.
Nyra knelt there, shaking, breathing hard, chest aching with everything she had admitted aloud for the first time.
Then the chamber door opened.
A rush of cool air swept over her.
And Aric stumbled inside, bruised, breathless, eyes wide the moment he saw her. “Nyra!”
She stood.
Their eyes met.
He froze.
Something in her expression raw, unguarded, fierce with new truth made him stop like she had reached into his chest and taken hold of whatever kept him moving.
“Are you hurt?” he asked softly.
“No,” she whispered. “Not anymore.”
Aric stepped closer, hesitating only a moment. “Nyra, what happened in here?”
She took a slow breath.
Then she told him the truth.
“All of it.”
And for the first time since entering the labyrinth, she felt steady.
Whole Unbreakable.
