Chapter 24 The Edge of the Shattered Gate
Chapter 24 The Edge of the Shattered Gate
The world did not quiet after Nyra’s awakening. If anything, it seemed to lean in listening, watching, waiting. The shadows along the cavern walls curled toward her like hounds sensing their returning master, while the embers drifting from her fingertips burned hotter, brighter, sharper. She felt stretched between two forces, as if her soul had one foot in fire and the other in a bottomless abyss.
Aric walked beside her, but his eyes kept flicking toward her hand the one that still glowed faintly, even after the blaze in the Hall subsided.
“You’re too calm,” he muttered.
“I’m not calm,” she replied softly. “I’m focused.”
“That’s worse,” he said. “You get dangerous when you’re focused.”
She didn’t deny it. Focus had saved her more than once. And now, it was the only thing keeping her from collapsing under the weight of everything she had felt when the crown of fire touched her mind. The Hollow King’s presence still lingered at the edges of her consciousness whispering, calling, coaxing.
You are awakening too slowly, little flame…
She clenched her fist, shattering the echo.
The cavern narrowed, twisting into a steep path carved into old stone. Liora moved ahead of them, staff in hand, eyes sharp as she searched for runes etched along the walls.
“The Shattered Gate isn’t far,” she said. “But when we reach it… everything changes.”
“You say that about every place we go,” Aric grumbled.
“Because every place we go is cursed,” Liora shot back.
Nyra couldn’t help a brief smile. Their bickering was a strange comfort something alive and human in a world that felt increasingly unreal.
But the smile faded as the air shifted around them.
The tunnel opened into a wide chamber half-natural, half-carved, illuminated by veins of glowing stone that pulsed like a heartbeat. At the far end, towering before them, stood the Shattered Gate: a colossal arch split down the middle, fragments hovering in the air as if caught in a perpetual explosion. Dark mist seeped from the cracks, coiling like smoke from an ancient wound.
Nyra’s breath hitched.
This place felt… familiar.
Aric stepped forward slowly. “If this is the entrance to the Rift… where the Hollow King speaks from…”
“It’s more than that,” Liora whispered, her voice tinged with awe and fear. “The Shattered Gate is a breach between realms. Fire and shadow collide here. It’s where power chooses its vessel.”
The mist shifted.
And the Gate seemed to look back at them.
Nyra felt a tremor ripple through her chest. The fire inside her responded first flaring with instinctive recognition. Then the shadow answered, sliding through her veins with an almost tender coldness.
Two forces.
One vessel.
Her.
“We shouldn’t be here long,” Aric said quietly. “This place isn’t… natural.”
“It’s calling her,” Liora murmured.
“I don’t care if it’s singing her lullabies,” Aric snapped. “We’re taking what we came for and leaving.”
Nyra exhaled slowly and stepped forward. “And what exactly did we come for?”
Liora swallowed. “To see if the power you awakened in the Hall reacts to the Gate. If the Hollow King’s bond can be severed… or strengthened.”
Aric stiffened. “Strengthened? No. Absolutely not.”
But Nyra was already stepping closer.
The Gate vibrated at her approach, the hovering shards trembling like a beast stirring in its sleep. The mist thickened, reaching toward her fingers.
Aric grabbed her wrist. “Nyra, wait”
She turned to him, and the fire in her eyes made his breath catch.
“I’m not doing this blindly,” she said. “But I need to know what I am now.”
His jaw tightened. “You’re still you.”
She wished she believed that.
She gently pulled her hand free and faced the Gate again.
The mist curled up her arm, cool as night. Images flashed through her mind shadows bowing, flames tearing through cities, a throne made of burning obsidian. A crown of ashes… a scream swallowed by darkness… a hand reaching toward her through the rift.
Jonas.
The vision snapped like a flame smothered by water. Nyra staggered back, gasping.
Aric caught her. “What did you see?”
She pressed a trembling hand to her temple. “My brother.”
Liora blanched. “Jonas is supposed to be”
“I know what he’s supposed to be,” Nyra said, voice shaking. “But I saw him. Through the Gate. Alive. Or… something close to it.”
Aric cursed under his breath. “So the Hollow King is using him.”
“Not using,” Liora said slowly. “Binding. Nyra’s brother may be part of whatever connects her to the Rift.”
Nyra’s stomach twisted. “I can’t leave him there.”
“You’re not going in,” Aric said firmly. “We’re not risking you like that.”
Nyra turned to him, and something in her expression made him step back. Not fear recognition.
She was changing.
The Gate pulsed again.
This time, a voice slipped through not a whisper, but a call.
Nyra.
The sound vibrated through her bones. The mist surged forward, rushing at her like a wave of shadowed flame.
Aric yanked her backward, but the force hit them both, sending them crashing to the stone floor. The chamber roared as the shards around the arch spiraled faster, winds whipping through the cavern.
Liora raised her staff, shouting an incantation to seal the Gate, but the Rift responded with violent resistance. Sparks flew. The ground shuddered.
“You need to get her away from it!” Liora cried.
“I’m trying!” Aric yelled, dragging Nyra toward the chamber wall as the mist clawed at her ankles like living chains.
Nyra struggled, torn between terror and recognition. “It’s not trying to hurt me”
“It IS!” Aric shouted. “Look at the ground!”
She did.
Where the mist touched the stone, it corroded instantly turning solid rock into drifting ash.
Her breath caught.
The Rift wasn’t calling her.
It was claiming her.
“No—no, no,” she whispered, voice breaking. “I’m not yours.”
The mist surged.
Aric pulled her into his arms, shielding her as the wind screamed around them. His voice was raw, desperate. “Nyra, listen to me fight it!”
She closed her eyes, reaching deep past the fear, past the chaos and found the ember inside her chest. The same ember that flared awake when Aric touched her, when she faced danger, when she embraced her power.
She grabbed hold of it.
Fire erupted from her spine, spiraling outward in a blinding burst. The flame met the mist mid-air shadow and fire colliding in a violent explosion of light. The cavern boomed, dust raining from the ceiling as the Gate recoiled.
The mist shrieked, splitting apart.
Nyra’s fire spread wider, forming a burning barrier between them and the Rift. The Gate flickered shards slowing their frantic rotation.
Then—
Silence.
Nyra collapsed to her knees, panting, the glow in her chest dimming. Aric knelt beside her, touching her cheek with trembling fingers.
“You’re here,” he breathed. “You’re still here.”
She leaned into him weakly. “I’m not sure for how long.”
Liora approached cautiously, eyes wide with fear and awe. “Nyra… you didn’t just resist the Rift. You pushed it back.”
Nyra swallowed. “But it’s getting stronger.”
Aric’s arms tightened
around her.
“Then we get stronger too,” he said fiercely. “Together.”
Nyra met his eyes.
For the first time since her awakening, she believed he might be right.
