Chapter 69 Powerless

Chapter 69 Powerless
Klishei knelt, the chill of the cobblestones seeping through her clothes, yet she felt nothing but the icy cold radiating from Yeseus.
No. Not death. Not this.
A guttural cry tore from her, a sound ripped from the deepest part of her soul, raw and primal. It was not a sound of sorrow, but of fierce, unyielding refusal. Her fingers, trembling, reached for his, brushing against the cold, dead flesh. The blight pulsed, a malevolent shadow consuming him.
No.
Something ignited deep within her, a spark that had smoldered, then flickered, then roared to life. It was a furnace, a sun, a molten core of pure, incandescent energy. It surged through her veins, hot and vibrant, a defiant roar against the encroaching darkness. Her hands pressed against his chest, one palm against the celestial blade, the other splayed over the blight.
A golden light erupted from her. The celestial blade, embedded in Yeseus’s chest, began to hum, a high-pitched whine of protest.
The blight recoiled, hissing, shrinking back from the onslaught of pure, vibrant life. Tendrils of shadow writhed, retreating from the golden light that pulsed from Klishei’s hands.
She closed her eyes, focusing, channeling every ounce of this newfound, terrifying power. It was instinct, pure and untamed, a primal urge to protect, to restore, to defy the very concept of an end. She felt the wound in his chest, a gaping void, and poured her essence into it, willing it to close, willing his heart to beat. The scent of ozone filled her nostrils, mingling with a faint, metallic tang.
A deep, shuddering gasp escaped Yeseus. His chest, once still, rose with a ragged breath. His eyelids fluttered, a sliver of vibrant blue appearing beneath them. The golden light around Klishei flared one last time, then receded, leaving her trembling, utterly drained, yet exhilarated. The celestial blade, now a dull, harmless hunk of metal, crumbled to dust, scattering across his chest. The blight was gone, completely eradicated, leaving behind only the faint, silvery lines of recent scars. His skin was warm, alive.
Jaden, who had stood impassive moments before, took an involuntary step back, his honey eyes wide with something akin to reverence, then alarm. The cosmic knights, their weapons still lowered, shifted uneasily, their collective gaze fixed on Klishei.
Klishei looked at Yeseus, truly looked at him, his chest rising and falling, his lips parted. He was breathing. He was alive. A sob, this time of profound relief, shook her. She cradled his head, pressing her cheek against his temple, feeling the faint thrum of his pulse beneath her fingers.
“Yeseus?” she whispered, her voice raw.
He stirred, his eyes opening fully. The vibrant blue, though still clouded with pain and confusion, met hers. He coughed, a weak, rattling sound. His hand, whole and strong once more, rose slowly, touching her cheek.
“Klishei,” he rasped, his voice rough, but undeniably his. “What… what happened?”
She pressed a kiss to his forehead, then pulled back, her gaze sweeping over his mending form. The memory of Jaden’s blade, the blight’s insidious advance, the terrifying finality of his collapse, still burned in her mind. This power, this Phoenix fire, it had saved him. But it had also consumed her, leaving her hollowed, yet resolute.
She rose, slowly, her legs unsteady beneath her. Her eyes, no longer wide with terror, now burned with a fierce, unwavering resolve. She turned to Jaden, her gaze locking with his, stripping away his carefully constructed mask of indifference.
“You tried to kill him,” she stated, her voice devoid of emotion, a cold, hard fact.
Jaden recovered his composure, though a flicker of unease still danced in his eyes. “He interfered. He defied the King’s will. He was a distraction.”
“He is my protector,” Klishei countered, her voice rising, a low thrum of power vibrating beneath her words. “My Alpha. My choice.” She gestured to Yeseus, who was slowly pushing himself up, his eyes now fixed on Jaden with a renewed, dangerous intensity. “You saw what I can do. You saw what I will do. You will not harm him again.”
Jaden’s lips thinned. “The King’s command is absolute, Phoenix Bride. The Alpha’s continued existence, intertwined with yours, creates an imbalance. It will not be tolerated.”
“Then take me,” Klishei said, the words cutting through the tense air, sharp and clear. Yeseus, halfway to standing, froze, his head snapping towards her, his blue eyes wide with disbelief.
“Klishei, no!” he growled, his voice still weak, but filled with a desperate warning.
She ignored him, her gaze fixed on Jaden. “Take me to your King. I will go willingly. I will fulfill my ‘destiny,’ as you call it. I will restore your balance. But in return, you will leave him alone. You will leave this world alone. No more attacks. No more threats. No more interference.”
Jaden stared at her, his honey eyes inscrutable. The cosmic knights exchanged glances, a subtle ripple of surprise passing through their ranks.
“A bold proposition, little Phoenix,” Jaden finally said, a slow smile spreading across his face, devoid of its usual mocking edge. This smile held a predatory satisfaction. “But one I believe the King will find… acceptable.”
“No!” Yeseus roared, pushing past the last vestiges of weakness. He lunged towards Klishei, his hand outstretched, desperate to reach her, to pull her back.
Klishei didn’t flinch. She met his gaze, a silent apology, a fierce determination shining in her eyes. “It’s the only way, Yeseus.”
Jaden moved with impossible speed, a blur of silver and starlight. He materialized beside Klishei, his hand gently but firmly gripping her arm.
“A deal then, Phoenix Bride,” Jaden said, his voice resonating with an ancient power. “You come with me. The Alpha and this world remain untouched. For now.”
He didn’t wait for her verbal confirmation. A shimmering vortex of starlight and swirling nebulae erupted around them, consuming them both.
“Klishei!” Yeseus screamed, his voice thick with a primal agony. He threw himself forward, his hand reaching into the swirling light, desperate to grasp her, to pull her back from the precipice.
His fingers brushed against something insubstantial, something cold and fleeting, then the vortex imploded, leaving behind only the lingering scent of ozone and the heavy, crushing silence of her absence. He stood alone in the courtyard, his hand still outstretched, trembling. The cosmic knights, their mission accomplished, vanished as silently as they had appeared.
The twin moons, high above, cast long, mournful shadows across the empty space where she had stood. Yeseus dropped to his knees, the cold cobblestones biting into his flesh, but he felt nothing. Only a vast, echoing emptiness where his heart had been. He had saved her life, only for her to sacrifice herself. And he, the last Alpha, the immortal hunter, was utterly, horribly powerless to stop it. He had failed.
