Chapter 154 The Shadow Asset

Chapter 154 The Shadow Asset
Sarah set her phone face down on the polished glass desk.

She looked at the paperwork in front of her, then let out a steady breath.

Luke was out in the city helping with the first direct deliveries to local retailers. She knew how busy the distribution hubs were today, and dropping thirty years of hidden truth over a phone call felt wrong.

She would wait until dinner. Tonight, inside their home, she would tell him everything.

\---

Behind a commercial supermarket on the south side of the city, Luke lowered a heavy wooden crate onto the concrete dock.

The delivery crew worked along the ramp, stacking cartons of skincare bottles into the storage bay.

Luke wiped his hands on a work rag. He refused to sit idle in an office while his wife carried the weight of a company launch on her shoulders.

A sharp vibration rattled inside his pants pocket.

Luke pulled out his phone. A new message flashed on the screen from the private foreign line.

The location of your father's pendant has been discovered.

Luke walked away from the loading bay, stopping in the quiet space behind the delivery truck.

He tapped the contact and brought the receiver to his ear.

The connection clicked open after a single ring.

"Aunt," Luke said.

"You took your time calling back," an older woman's voice answered through the speaker.

"Where is it?" Luke asked.

"The Capital," she replied.

"Where in the Capital?"

"My people are tracking the signal right now," she said. "The stone surfaced on a private scanner minutes ago. I'll send you the exact coordinates the second the lock is firm."

Luke looked down at his boots. "Good."

"Don't hang up yet, Luke," she said, her tone hardening. "We need to talk about your return."

Luke stayed silent, listening to the hum of the truck engine in the alley.

"I'm not getting younger," his aunt continued. "Running this global empire alone is wearing me down. You're the only blood I have left, and you need to take your place at the head of this family."

"I have responsibilities here," Luke said.

"You have companies across five continents waiting for your signature," she countered.

She paused, letting out a dry breath.

"Your father built the foundation of this dynasty with his bare hands before he walked away to join the army," she said. "He handed the entire business network to me because he wanted to fight on the front lines. He became a legend, and then his own comrade poisoned him out of jealousy."

"I killed that traitor five years ago," Luke said flatly. "His debt is paid."

"Then pay mine," she stated. "Take over what belongs to you."

"I have a wife, Aunt. And a daughter."

"Then bring them with you," she replied instantly. "I'll prepare the main estate today."

"Moving them into your circle reveals who I am," Luke said.

"And how long do you plan to play the broke ex-convict?" she asked.

Luke didn't answer.

"She's your wife, Luke," his aunt said, her voice softening slightly. "She stood by you when you had nothing. She took the hits from her family and raised your child in the dirt. Don't you think she deserves the truth?"

Luke leaned his shoulder against the brick wall of the alley. "It's complicated."

"It's only complicated because you're hiding behind a wall," she said. "You can't keep her in the dark forever. Tell her who you are."

"I'll think about it," Luke said.

"Don't think too long," she warned. "I'll send the location of the pendant soon."

The line went dead.

Luke lowered the device and slipped it back into his pocket. He stared at the pavement for a moment before turning back toward the loading ramp.

\---

Hundreds of miles away, inside the Cross family estate in the Capital, Isabella sat frozen at her vanity table.

Her hands shook as she stared down at her phone screen.

A bright red banner covered the entire display, flashing with a priority warning code that locked every app on the device.

RESTRICTED ASSET DETECTED. ITEM FLAGGED UNDER VANGUARD DEFENSE DIRECTIVE.

DEVICE LOCATION LOGGED. CEASE ALL QUERIES IMMEDIATELY.

Isabella tapped the glass frantically, trying to swipe the notification away, but the screen refused to respond.

Ten minutes ago, she had taken a close-up photo of the blood-red jade pendant resting against her collarbone. Out of sheer curiosity about its healing properties, she had uploaded the image to an open network database to analyze the stone's mineral origin.

The search engine hadn't returned a mineral report.

Instead, the system had crashed, replaced instantly by the military alert claiming the pendant belonged to an unknown entity.

"Vanguard?" Isabella whispered, her voice tight in the quiet bedroom.

She pulled her laptop open on the desk and typed the name into a private browser.

The search results loaded in a scattered mess of restricted links, blocked government forums, and deleted articles.

Every official page labeled the organization as an unverified rumor.

She clicked on a private security forum buried deep in the search results.

The text described the Vanguard as an elite shadow army operating beyond international borders. A military power with unlimited resources and absolute authority, feared by global governments.

Several articles called the group an urban legend invented by foreign contractors to explain unsolved battlefield massacres.

Isabella pushed the laptop away, her chest rising and falling in rapid breaths.

"This is crazy," she muttered to herself, rubbing her cold palms together. "It's a fake warning. It's just a system glitch."

She reached up and touched the smooth jade hanging from her neck.

Her father had worn this exact stone for thirty years. He had guarded it with his life, hiding it beneath his clothes until the day he died.

If the stone belonged to an international shadow army, why did her father have it in his vault?

A cold knot tightened in her stomach.

She picked up her phone, ready to dial her brother's direct office extension.

Gideon was at the corporate headquarters downtown, buried under piles of emergency paperwork after their father's death. He had spent the entire morning dealing with board members and angry investors.

Isabella looked at his contact photo on the screen.

Calling him now would only add more chaos to his day. He was already carrying the weight of their entire family on his back.

She locked the screen and placed the device on the desk.

She would wait until evening. When Gideon returned home from the office tonight, she would show him the alert and demand the truth about the stone.
