Chapter 29 029
Alexander's POV
I had been so mad at no one in particular when the tiny wolf had interrupted my golden moment with Danica. Hell, I had to bite my tongue to stop myself from cursing beneath my breath.
My jaw was clenched hard and my eyes still had Rage lurking beneath the corners. There was no way the little girl would have answered my questions with that stern poker gaze that flickered between amber and blue.
However, I really wanted to know. I was mad, yeah. But possibly not at the little wolf. Anyone would be stupid to be mad at the adorable yet smart one.
She might have fueled Rage's restlessness but she does have good discerning eyes.
Definitely, my mate was the prettiest woman I've ever seen as well. She did not lie about that.
It was quite easy to find the little one's home. And when we did, we had almost missed her mother as she also set out in search of her daughter. But I smelled her in time to trace her back.
She wouldn't stop thanking us. She was crying even as she did, without realizing it. And I couldn't blame her. It would be really tragic to lose someone like her little daughter to the wild ones or strange rogues.
But she was more grateful that someone like me helped. The ruthless Alpha no one dared to cross. Not even in their measly thoughts that no one could hear for fear that his spirit might as well just strike them to their deaths.
I mean, the rumors did spread at some point, that my spirit was just as ruthless as my whole being to begin with. It was absurd, Yes. But as long as it stopped a number of people from showing the barbaric side of them, then I was okay. I didn't stop them. Didn't have to.
"Thank you, Miss. From the moment I saw you treat the Gamma's sister at the mating night party, I knew you had a good heart." She thanked Danica, her eyes holding a concern and care that Danica deserved.
"I mean, not everyone saw how the lady talked down at you for being below her yet everyone doubted how kind you were to help her out of her misery. I thought about it and I came to terms with the fact that I'd be more glad to watch her die a painful slow death, I don't care what kind of woman that would make me turn out to be" The woman emphasized and my gaze darkened, flickering to Danica for a confirmation of what the woman just said.
She wouldn't answer at first. She felt uncomfortable, knowing I would flip again. Good.
So it was true. Annabelle had the audacity to bad-mouth my mate and Danica right here... Gawd, I had no idea to what extent she would keep on surprising me. Because at this point, one would think she was getting paid for all that kindness.
"It's okay. She already realized her mistakes and apologized sincerely" Danica muttered to assure the woman and indirectly, the fuming one behind her as well— Me.
"As she should" I muttered even before the woman could respond.
That apology wouldn't stop me from hearing from her though, but at least she won't go through the humiliation of apologizing to Danica in public.
The tension hung tightly in the air as Danica's back stiffened at my response and the woman's gaze flickered between us, almost knowingly.
If she knows, she knows.
The more people knew, the harder it would become if by any chance she was hiding from me and the better chance I would have in convincing her to be mine.
Danica's next words broke the tension.
She'd caught a wound on the woman's leg even before I did.
Whether it was the smell of blood or she had just inspected the woman thoroughly enough to notice. Eitherways, it was admirable.
"You could come to the Pack's clinic to get that wound treated, you know?" She pointed and the woman instinctively tried to hide it, while apologizing for inconveniencing us with the sight.
I mean, who the hell apologizes for something like that?
No one else but Freya's mother— that was the little wolf's name.
"I can't possibly come there. I can't afford the fee without having to starve my daughter. It will heal with time, I'm sure." She muttered and I saw Danica bite her lips softly, feeling conflicted.
I could tell she really wanted to help her out but she was possibly contemplating because she had no say at the clinic just yet.
"I'm still on trial though, I could do that for you and you wouldn't be billed as much... Or you could find me after tomorrow's trial by evening. I'd be pleased to help" she suggested but the hesitance in the woman was palpable.
"Or you could go to the clinic for direct treatment without spending a dime." I chipped in and they both turned to face me.
"What?!"
"Really?!"
The woman and Danica exclaimed respectively and I shrugged lightly, while letting them know I was serious. Danica already took it seriously even if I wasn't anyway.
"He is a man of his word, Florida. I assure you. If he tells you to come then I suggest you do it without hesitation" Danica pressed and the woman nodded, while smiling lightly.
That... I figured, was the woman's name.
"Thank you so much, Alpha." She muttered with a deep bow.
"Thank you so much, Big wolfe" Freya's tiny voice muttered as well, her little teeth flashing that cute full-blown smile at me and I ruffled her hair.
The moment I did that, she let out a growl. An actual growl, making the two women laugh knowingly.
"He has no idea girls hate that, does he?" Florida whispered to Danica amidst her laugh.
"I doubt he does" She responded, laughing as well.
Well, I could listen to that laugh for as long as time would permit so I decided to let them think they were gossiping without me knowing.
"I have to look pretty all the time, Big wolfe! That was so not demure. Don't do that to Auntie Dan" she said, whispering the last part for only my ears and I couldn't stop my laughter at that.
God, this little wolf was fun and smarter than any kid should be.
I nodded in affirmation before standing to leave with Danica.
"See you tomorrow, Rida, Freya" Danica muttered, her voice thick with emotion.
"Thank you, Danica, Alpha" Florida responded and off we went. Back to the palace.
"Thank you, Alexander... For offering her a free treatment. I felt caught up and useless for a while back there, you know" Danica mentioned, her soft voice fading into the night.
"She's one of the reasons why I'm an Alpha. If there's no people, then there wouldn't be a need for a leader. It's my right to care for them at all turns" I told her and she blinked up at me, trying to hide the pink hue in her cheeks.
"You know, I still don't understand why you're called Ruthless. You've never seemed like one since I met you..." She trailed off, wandering into her own thoughts.
How naive that thought was. But Good. Let her think I'm the nice easygoing Alpha because I'm one to those who learns not to cross a line.
"Who knows? One of these days, you might just see why I'm called that." I said lastly before coming to a stop exactly where I stood when she found me. Beneath her window.
I pulled her flush against me before jumping right to her window. With one hand holding onto the window sill, my other hand effortlessly led her through the space of the opened window. I knew her friend was there. Fast asleep, so I let the curtains separate both of us from her room.
I jump
ed back down after that, but not before stealing a kiss on her inviting plump lips.
"Goodnight, Dani.”
