Chapter 102 102

Chapter 102 102
Danica's POV

The plan was to escort Bianca and Anabel to the Pack house main entrance but we didn't even get to reach the main entrance when three palace guards crossed us.

My gaze narrowed at them but beneath the slight frown, my pulse thrummed against my skin.

For the past two days, I haven't seen Alexander up close. He was always several miles away with a bunch of men whenever I saw him. There was no word about an official investigation and that alone made me anxious.

Were they finally here to take me in for questioning?

“No one is allowed to go out of the Pack house” one of the guards said and Bianca folded her arms proudly, her intimidating glare in perfect position.

But they didn’t even blink.

“Why not?” she asked.

“Alpha summoned everyone to the execution ground” the same guy muttered and my heart skipped several beats.

“Why? Is someone getting killed?” Bianca asked again but this time all the response we got was a hand motioning us towards the execution ground.

“Rude!” Bianca grumbled, loud enough for them to hear.

By the time we got to the execution ground, almost everyone were gathered there already. The hall was so crowded that it almost felt as if we were the last set of people to get there.

Over five hundred people were in this huge hall and it didn’t even feel like a single soul was there. That was how silent it was. And I could tell why it was that silent.

Because somehow in the middle of late winter, the atmosphere felt chilly within a warm noon, and the reason was none other than the fact that the Alpha himself was releasing that cold energy. One wrong move and the whole five hundred plus witnesses standing in this hall, anticipating the investigation results will probably lose their heads alongside the real culprit.

There was a ninety percent chance that what I just imagined would happen, and when it does, I will be the first wolf to lose her head, since I’m the undeniable culprit in this case.

“A considerable number of you all standing here must have guessed why you were summoned into the execution hall so suddenly without prior rumors or notice. “And I’ll be happy to give you enough space to feel disappointed” Alexander said, each word dripping with a hint of sarcasm that couldn’t be ignored.

But what does that even mean? Enough space to feel disappointed?

Everyone already knows that the so-called talented doctor was the culprit. What does he mean by everyone getting disappointed?

The next minute, a lady was brought forward to the podium where she was forced to kneel, only for her to push her own forehead into the ground, and I could tell that she did it just so she wouldn’t meet Alexander’s gaze.

Then I started wondering, was this investigation about something else entirely? And not Miss Ruslan’s failed surgery case?

“Tell everyone what you did, Elsa” Alexander muttered, tone calm in a way that sent chills down my very own spine, even though I wasn’t the so-called Elsa.

The moment those words left Alexander’s lips, she began trembling, her entire body shaking like a drenched leaf caught in the storm.

“Don’t make me repear myself…” he added impatiently and unconsciously, my palms began to sweat big time.

I couldn’t help but think, ‘Is this how ruthless he would be when it’s my turn?’

“I replaced the clinic’s suture needles and lines with infected ones a few hours before the last surgery” she confessed, her voice barely audible but I heard her nonetheless.

The words hit me like a slap. It wasn’t as if I didn’t know that the equipment were probably tampered with, but I had hoped that the mix up wasn’t intentional.

Finding out that someone deliberately tampered with the equipment probably just out of spite for me, made me feel like the most horrible piece of shit.

“Surely, you didn’t do it just because you hated my godmother and you wanted her dead at all cost did you?” Alexander asked and she immediately shook her head. She did it so hard and I almost imagined her head falling off her neck.

“I would never do something so spiteful…”

“But you already did. And that’s why you tried to run” Alexander cut her off but she didn’t stop shaking her head, her tears falling non-stop.

“I only did what I was ordered to do, I didn’t mean to cause Madam Ruslan’s death…” she trailed off, stopping abruptly as she realized she’d blabbered a little over the line.

“On whose order did you tamper with the surgical equipment?” Alexander asked, looking almost bored by the sight in front of him. He looked so relaxed, as if he already knew that everything would go exactly how he wanted. And somehow, looking at him with that look in his eyes made me feel a bit calm.

Just then Alexander’s gaze shifted, from the girl he was questioning to where I was standing. His eyes met mine and my heart literally stopped for that millisecond, as if I’d been caught doing something illegal.

The second I thought of looking away, his assuring smile kept me arrested in those beautiful dark eyes, and even when he looked away, I couldn’t stop the heat that rushed to my face.

But unless I was being paranoid, I could swear I saw guilt in his eyes.

‘What could he possibly feel guilty about?’ I started thinking, but it only lasted until I heard the one name I wouldn’t have ever imagined in the next five years.

“Princess Anabel! She… she ordered me to replace the surgical needles and lines without letting the head doctor know. I… I swear I didn’t know it was a contaminated one” Elsa cried, the words pouring out more smoothly thanks to her desperation to keep her life. But even then, I doubted her.

Could she be too desperate that she just blurted out a name impulsively?

Of all the names at the entire Pack, why would she chose to mention the name of someone high up? Someone related to the ruthless and impulsive gamma just to protect herself from the Alpha’s wrath? Was it really worth it…?

Or was it just the truth?
