Chapter 66

Alpha Jaxon.

I sat in my office, listening as my father chastised me for not telling him about the discovery of the warlock. He expected to be notified because he was filled with revenge for his mate. I sighed, burying my face in my hands, as the man went on and on about a father-son relationship. Venting about how I had become different since Scar came back after the kidnapping.

"Are you even listening to me?" I lifted my face after the man banged on the desk, demanding my attention.

"I don’t see why you’re screaming in my office; you already know,” I spoke dismissively, heaving a loud sigh.

“This used to be my office too; don’t sit there and think you can just treat me however you want," the man ground out, staring right into my eyes. If it were another person, my wolf would have taken it as a challenge. Only blood would explain what happened there because my beast would have snapped.

"With all due respect, father, I am in no mood for this. We are trying to see whether we can locate the warlock and avenge mom." I looked at the office phone when it began to ring.

“There’s nothing to locate here; Silas was involved. From what Astra told me, they are working together. So why not fucking lure Silas out and torture the motherfucker until he breaks?" I rubbed my temples as he spoke. As he opened his mouth to continue lamenting, I decided to pick up the phone and save myself from his lecture.

"Alpha Jaxon, Yellow Moon Pack,” I answered once I picked it up, feeling a bit relieved when my father shut up. I watched as he sipped his whiskey directly from the bottle, raising an eyebrow at me.

"Alpha, it’s me again. Did you tell her I called? I really need to speak to her; it’s urgent." I remembered the voice. It was the same woman who called the day after Scarlett spent the night at Astra’s place. I had wanted to come clean about the call, but something inside me stopped me.

"You need to stop calling my pack,” I calmly spoke, shaking my head when the woman wouldn’t shut up.

"Please tell her... Alpha Si-las is determined to take her back. I need to tell her to..." I didn’t wait for her to finish the statement; I hurled the phone across the office. Who the fuck did he think he was? It seemed murdering Cane and his pathetic rogues hadn’t taught him a lesson.

"Let him come,” my father sneered, looking at the broken pieces of the phone.

“Seems he doesn’t know when to let it go." I responded, clenching my hands into tight fists.

“That could be possibly the man who had my mate, your mother, and the former Luna of this pack murdered. The same motherfucker who wants to take your soul mate from you." As he drawled every word, my insides stirred with an emotion I couldn’t stop. My lips stretched into a smirk as I imagined sinking my canines into the stupid alpha’s throat.

"I’m going to enjoy killing him." I couldn’t even recognize my own voice as my chest vibrated. A silence took over as I worked to regulate my breathing.

"What is wrong?" Scarlett’s voice invaded my mind.

"It’s nothing,” I responded, closing my eyes to let my wolf feel the presence of his mate. Only she could make us relax quickly and easily.

"Babe, I felt a surge of rage; who angered you?" she pressed, making me heave another sigh.

"Where are you? We need to talk." I gave in, picking up my phone and car keys, much to my father’s questioning look. He wasn’t finished with me, but I needed to see my mate at that moment.

"At the house, in the bedroom." I didn’t question why she was still at the house given her duties as the Luna.

"Where the heck do you think you are going?" He stood from the chair, attempting to block my way towards the door.

"We are done here." I sidestepped him and left, leaving him muttering profanities.

"Oh, and lock the door. We have a few manner less pack members." I was gone before he could ask what I meant. I didn’t have the luxury of explaining to him what was happening. The fewer the people who knew the whole story, the better chance we had at capturing the mole. A few minutes later, I was pushing the door to our bedroom. Scarlett was seated on the carpeted floor, perusing the spell book, with a chain in her free hand.

“Babe, what are you up to?" She didn’t mention practicing magic when I left for the office in the morning.

“Trying to de cloak this chain,” she simply answered, reading aloud the written words on one of the pages.

"We talked about this baby; you cannot risk working on the ring." I sat beside her, having already taken off my combat boots at the front door.

"And that is why I asked Astra to cast a cloaking spell on the chain to see whether I can break it,” she replied, lifting the silver chain right in front of her eyes.

"Not important for now. What had you riled up?" She put the book and the chain aside and turned to look at me, giving me unwavering attention.

“Scarlett, would you believe your mother if she told you that Silas was still after you?" She furrowed her eyebrows, shifting her gaze toward the door.

"What do you mean? First of all, my mother is a farm worker at The Crane Power; there’s no way she would ever know Silas’s plans."

"A woman called, saying she is your mother and that she needed to speak urgently to you,” I explained, watching as confusion was painted all over her face.

"Babe, my mother doesn’t own a phone. She is beneath such privileges in that awful pack. Plus, why would she care what happens to me? She never did anything when I told her that Silas was abusing me. At that time, I thought it was because she was afraid of what Silas would do to her." Her voice broke slightly as she repeated the story she had narrated after we mated.

"But now that I am mated and would like to have pups of my own, I realize how selfish she was. She didn’t even say sorry, Jax; she always told me to endure because we had no choice." Her voice rose as she was forced to remember her mother’s response.

"I don’t want to speak to her; I want nothing to do with a woman who didn’t do much when I was in pain. What could she possibly do now that I am mated to an alpha?" I took her hands into mine and allowed my eyes to take in her angelic yet livid face.

"Whatever you wish, hun,” I whispered, squeezing her hands. Just then, she pulled her hands away from mine, picked up the chain, and whispered.

"I just figured out a way to de cloak the spell on this chain; watch me work the damn magic."
