Chapter 139
Chapter 139
Kate
I should have known something was wrong the moment I stepped inside. Kelly was sitting at the head of the table, her expression unreadable. Susan was beside her, arms crossed, looking way too smug for my liking.
And then there was the envelope. The DNA results, as she should. The air was filled with tension, but I didn’t care. This was it, the moment I’d been waiting for.
I smirked, sauntering forward.
"Well? Are you finally ready to accept reality?"
Kelly didn’t react. She simply pushed the envelope across the table.
"Kate… we got the results."
My heart pounded. Finally.
I grabbed the paper with shaking fingers, my eyes scanning the words eagerly. Then I stopped, my breath hitched. Everything blurred, I read it again. Then a third time, the words didn’t change.
"No genetic match."
I blinked. No…that wasn’t right. That couldn’t be right. My vision swam as I stumbled back, the paper shaking in my grip.
"Where did you get this nonsense?." I asked, my tone sharp.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"No, this… there has to be a mistake somewhere!"
I looked up at Kelly, but she wasn’t gloating. She wasn’t even smiling. She just watched me, Cold and emotionless. And that reaction sent chills down my spine.
And then Susan spoke.
"You’re not her sister, Kate."
Her voice was calm, but her words struck me like a blade.
"You never were."
I stared at her. Susan, Kelly’s pathetic little friend. What the hell was she doing in the middle of this?
"Who the hell do you think you are?" I snapped, my voice shaking. "This isn’t your family! Nor your problem!"
But Susan didn’t react the way I thought she would. Instead, she stared right back at me, like she knew something I didn’t. Like she pitied me, and was worse than anything else.
Kelly finally spoke.
"Kate… the results are accurate."
Her voice was too steady. Like she was certain of what she was saying.
"We’re not related” she paused “I—uh…I can’t seem to make sense of it either. But we literally went for the test together so…."
I felt the words more than I heard them. They crashed into me, ripping me apart from the inside out.
"No." I shook my head violently. "You’re lying. You had this altered. You—"
"Kate." Kelly’s voice hardened. "Just stop, It’s over."
My heart dropped. Over? Did she just say over?
“No!" My scream echoed through the room.
I didn’t think, I just moved. My hands grabbed the edge of the table, and before I even knew what I was doing, I flipped it.
The sound of shattering glass and crashing wood filled the air, but I barely heard it over the anger rushing in my ears. Kelly and Susan jumped back, but I wasn’t looking at them anymore.
My vision was red. This wasn’t happening. This can’t be happening to me. I had spent years fighting for my place.
For my inheritance, for my rightful claim, for what I deserved. And now they were telling me I had nothing?
I wasn’t just losing the will, I was losing everything. The status. The name. The legacy. The very thing that made me who I was. I clenched my fists so tightly my nails dug into my skin.
"I don’t accept this." My voice was deadly quiet. "I refuse to accept this."
Kelly exhaled, shaking her head. "Kate… this isn’t something you can change."
She didn’t get it. She would never get it. If I wasn’t part of this family, then who am I?
I took a shaky breath, forcing my mind to clear. This wasn’t over. If I wasn’t Kelly’s biological sister…then who was?
Susan stood there watching as I boil with frustration. And that look on her face tripled my anger. My gaze snapped to her, and something in my gut twisted.
Why was she so calm about this?
“You’re happy you finally separated me from my sister, aren’t you?" I whispered, my eyes burning into Susan.
She frowned. "What are you talking about?"
"You tell me, Susan." My voice dripped with venom. "Why do you care so much about this? Why are you so invested?"
Susan shifted uncomfortably, Kelly glanced at her.
Ah, so Kelly didn’t know either. I stepped closer to Susan, lowering my voice.
"I don’t know what game you’re playing," I murmured, "but I promise you….you’re going to regret ever getting in my way."
I walked out of that room shaking with anger and humiliation. But more than anything else—with purpose.
If truly, I wasn’t Kelly’s sister… If I wasn’t entitled to the inheritance…Then I had nothing left to lose.
Which meant, I could do anything. And I would. I would tear down everything. I would make sure Kelly’s life crumbled beneath her feet. I would destroy Susan for ever standing in my way.
And when I was done, they would both regret ever crossing me. I pulled out my phone, dialing the one person I never thought I’d call. The one person who hated Kelly as much as I did.
The line clicked, a familiar voice answered.
"Well, well… I was wondering when you’d come crawling."
I smirked, even as my heart pounded.
"I have a proposal for you."
"I’m listening."
