Chapter 127

Chapter 127
Kelly

I wasn’t stupid. I wasn’t about to walk into Davis’s trap alone. But I also knew one thing, if we didn’t find my father fast,  Davis would make sure I never saw him alive again.

Thinking about it alone, brings me to my knees. Adrian’s grip on the steering wheel was tight as we drove through the dimly lit streets. His jaw was locked, his eyes hard, watchful.

“We need a lead,” I said, barely recognizing my own voice. “Something. Someone. He didn’t just vanish.”

Adrian’s fingers drummed against the wheel.  Then, finally—

“I know a guy.”

I exhaled sharply.  That was all I needed.

……..

The warehouse on the outskirts of town smelled like rust and gasoline. Dim lighting shined overhead, casting long, eerie shadows.

And the man tied to the chair in front of us? He was shaking.

“C’mon, Paul,” Adrian muttered, crouching down to his level. “You were Davis’s right-hand man for years. You’re telling me you don’t know where he is?”

I watched as Adrian became a gangster while interrogating Paul, it was obvious he used to belong to he mafia gang.

Paul’s eyes darted back and forth, sweat dripping down his temple.

“I—I haven’t talked to him since he got locked up, man. I swear.”

I wasn’t buying it. I stepped forward, my boots clicking against the concrete floor.  Paul flinched. Good.

I leaned in, my voice low, cold even.

“We don’t have time for your lies.”

“I—I’m not lying!”

Adrian sighed, standing up and rolling his shoulders.

“Guess we’re doing this the hard way.”

Paul swallowed hard.

“L–listen, listen, okay?! I heard something, just rumors.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Go on.”

Paul shifted in his chair, nervous.

“He….he’s been talking to people. Old associates. He’s got someplace hidden, but no one knows where.”

Adrian glanced at me. His information weren’t enough.

I stepped closer, my voice like ice.

“Then tell me…..who did he call? Who did he trust?”

Paul hesitated, but Adrian didn’t.

He grabbed the back of Paul’s chair, yanking it forward.

“Start talking, or I swear to God, you’ll wish you never heard Davis’s name.”

Paul’s breath hitched.

“Okay! There’s a warehouse. South side. Near the docks. Some old building he used for business before he got arrested.”

Adrian looked at me.

“That’s something.”

I nodded, It was all we had. And it was enough.

……..

We were already halfway across the city when my phone rang.  I stared at the screen.

Unknown Number.

Adrian glanced at me. “Davis?”

I didn’t answer, I picked up.

“…Kelly.”

My stomach twisted.  Not Davis, it was Kate.

I almost hung up.  Almost.

“What do you want?” I snapped.

Kate sighed.

“Look, I don’t have time for your attitude. I know where Davis is.”

I clenched my jaw. “And I’m supposed to trust you?”

A pause.

“No,” Kate admitted. “But you’re running out of options, aren’t you?”

I hated how much she was right.

My fingers tightened around the phone. “Where?”

“I’ll send you the address.”

The call ended.  A second later, a message popped up.

Adrian glanced at it, then back at me.

“Do we trust her?”

I swallowed hard. Every instinct screamed no, but…. what if she was telling the truth?

Adrian sighed. “This feels like a trap.”

I nodded. “I know.”

But we had no choice.

~

The second we arrived, I knew.

Something was wrong. The warehouse was too quiet. Too empty, like a stage waiting for its actors.

Adrian tensed beside me. “I don’t like this.”

Neither did I. We stepped inside. The air was filled with dust and decay. My footsteps echoed as I moved deeper in, heart pounding.

Then—a clatter.  A shadow shifted. Adrian grabbed my wrist, pulling me back just as…..

BOOM.

The doors slammed shut behind us.  Locked.

A voice echoed through the space.

“You really thought I’d make this easy?” Davis said, his tone mocking.

I froze. My heart hammering in my chest.

“I told you to leave your guard dog, Kelly…,” he continued. “Why don’t you ever listen to me”

I clenched my fists. Adrian’s posture shifted, ready to fight.

Davis laughed, and the lights flickered. Then—gunfire.

Adrian yanked me down behind a crate as bullets ripped through the air. It was a setup, Davis never wanted to negotiate.

He wanted revenge, and he wanted me dead.

“Stay low,” Adrian whispered.

My heart pounded. Gunshots echoed in the warehouse, bullets splintering wood. We had to move.

Adrian grabbed my hand, pulling me toward a metal staircase leading to an upper exit. There was footsteps behind us.

We burst through a door at the top, straight into the night. The parking lot was empty.  For a second, I thought we made it.  Then….headlights.

An engine roaring to life.  A car came barreling toward us.

“RUN!” Adrian shouted.

We barely made it to his car before the tires screeched behind us, the unknown vehicle giving hunt. Adrian slammed on the gas. I looked back, dark windows, masked driver.

My pulse raced.

“Hold on,” Adrian growled.

The city blurred past us as we speed through the streets. The other car stayed on us.

Then…..BANG.

The windshield shattered, I screamed. Adrian swerved violently, glass flying.  Another gunshot, we were being hunted.

Adrain drove towards a street leading to a cave that had two straight roads, that was how they missed us.
