Chapter 150
Chapter 150
Lincoln
Blakes entire camp was in uproar. First because they had one of their own back and then later after Blake had told them that we needed to move.
There was a few questions but no one really put up a fight. Blake said they needed to move camps so they simply took him at his word and started to pack up.
I didn’t help. I couldn’t. I was more than capable but I couldn’t bring myself to move away from my seat by the fire.
“Are you ok, son?” Across from me my mother asked.
For several long seconds I just warmed my hands in the fire.
“Son?” She prompted.
My eyes flashed as I glared at her through the flicking blaze. “Don’t call me that.” I snapped.
“You are my son Lincoln. My body made and grew yours, I went through the agony of birth and raised-“
“And then you deserted me and left me to fend for myself in the house of a monster.” I reminded her with a snarl.
The smile slipped an inch and a coldness seeped into her eyes. “I am going to pretend you didn’t say that Lincoln,” she chided angrily. “Because you have been through an ordeal but-“
“But nothing mother.” Standing I towered over her. “You left me.”
Calmly she stared up at me. “And didn’t you just do the same thing?” Her voice was small but it hit me like a punch in the gut. I stumbled back to sitting.
“It wasn’t like that.” And it wasn’t. But I couldn’t tell her that. I couldn’t tell anyone.
“Wasn’t it? You could have fought for the omega and her daughter.”
“My daughter's name is Faith and she is the most beautiful angel I have ever seen.” That was completely true. “She is also your granddaughter.”
“I know but that doesn’t change the fact that you left them.” She pointed out.
I looked away. “I did what I had to to keep them safe.” I mumbled.
“But wouldn’t being with you be better for them? You are a strong alpha aren’t you son?” She didn’t let me say anything before she carried on. “But you knew you couldn’t win against him so you didn’t. You might pretend to yourself that you left them with him because it was safer for them but it was at least partly selfish because you didn’t want to lose that fight.” She held up a hand. “Which is fine. Self preservation is healthy but do not sit there and judge me on making the same choice. We both did what we needed to stay alive. We aren’t very different at all.”
Fuck her. Fuck her to hell and back. I was nothing like her.
“I’m not saying this to hurt you, son.” My mother said softly.
Again I said nothing. Instead I dropped my head and looked at the floor. Really I had nothing to say to her. She had abandoned me.
“I just can’t do this without you.”
Her words made my head snap up so quickly that my neck made a horrible cracking sound. “What?”
Had I really just heard her right? Or had I been imagining it.
“I said I can’t do this without you.” She repeated.
“Without me?”
“We don’t have many powerful alphas within our organisation. A few mediocre ones but none with yours or-“ her eyes darted across the cavernous room to where Blake was pushing back his Omegas hair.
He loved her , it was written on every look he gave her.
Blake had always been a better man than me, mostly because he didn’t crave power the way I seemed to. When it came to his people and his mate he was selfless and I was - what?
Selfish. That’s what I was.
But I wasn’t as selfish as her, the woman who had given birth to me. Not because she had left me as a child, I kind of understood that but -
“So that is why you decided to come back?” I sighed , and for a second she looked confused. “Because you needed my help?” I clarified softly. “You didn’t come back because you wanted to reconnect , you didn’t come back to help me get my mate and child back. You don’t care about them at all, do you? In fact you don’t care about fuck all except your own messed up agenda.”
“Hope, would want you to help us.” My mother’s eyes bored into mine and she didn’t blink.
It was strange because she was an omega but she wasn’t acting like it. She was defiant
Like Hope.
Did that mean she wasn’t from this time either. Was my mother more than Hope than I realised and if that was true then how many other omegas had been snatched out of their time and thrust into mine.
“No she wouldn’t-“
“You don’t know your so called mate as well as I do Lincoln. She was part of our movement.”
I already knew that. “I know but that doesn’t mean she wants you to break the world again.”
Anger flushed my mothers cheeks red. Pulling herself up to her full height, she glared at me with her hands on her hips.
“The world is already broken Lincoln. People like you broke it. Men.” She spat and her eyes flashed as she looked at me, and there was so much hate in her face that I felt it like a spear in my heart.
She really did hate me and not just me either. She tried to hide it but it was written on every line of her face. She hated every single person here.
In fact she despised every single thing about this time.
I knew we had our flaws. Fuck we had so many flaws but so did every time in history.
“We need to wipe the slate clean and this time women will do it and we will do it properly.”
Silence fell around the camp. You could have heard a pin drop.
She hated us all so much that she wanted to wipe out everyone. She didn’t care that she had asked these people to help her kill themselves.
She didn’t care about anything but herself. In a way she was just as crazy as Justin.
Maybe she was worse.
“You are talking about murdering the entire planet.” I whispered and in the back of the room a baby cried. My heart gave a pang. My baby was safe but for how much longer?
It felt like we had enemies on all sides and I didn’t know which way to turn.
“Some will survive. The strongest and when that happens they will be led by women.”
“You mean by you.” Blake said from behind my shoulder. I glanced at him. His arm was still around his mate who was cuddling their child.
She flicked her eyes up to him but didn’t answer.
“Mother,” I tried to reason with her. “There is goodness here. Good and loving people.”
“And there is also evil.” She snapped back. “And that evil needs to be cut off. If some good-“ her eyes travelled around the people who were now silently watching her. “If some good needs to be cut off as sacrifice then so be it.”
“No.” My voice was strained. “I won’t let you do this.”
Her laughter came as a surprise. “You won’t let me? Oh Lincoln, it's quaint that you think you have a choice.”
“I do have a choice. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life but I won’t sit back and let you kill everyone. These people deserve to live.”
“If you are not with me, Lincoln, then you are my enemy.” My mother’s eyes flashed angrily.
Behind me I felt Blake move ever so slightly.
He had my back.
Every single person in this room did. They might not be my pack but in a way they were.
I took a deep breath. “I think you should leave, mother.”
Confusion clouded her features. “And why would I do that?”
Giving her a shrug, I smiled at her. “Because we are now enemies. I suggest you run,” I glanced over my shoulder at Blake. “Because you just threatened to murder his family. Now run.”
