Responsibility Weight
Caden's POV
My mind weighed heavily, drawing me further into a maze of confusion as I sat in my chambers, staring blankly at the stone wall across from me. When the council met soon I would be reminded once more of my duty and commitment to Ivy.
No matter how much I wanted to it felt like an unending burden that I would never be able to lift. I let out a sigh as I combed through my unkempt hair. For days I had not slept. The never-ending demands of leadership and upholding my family's legacy were draining.
I could only keep moving forward and hope that everything would work itself out because it felt like the walls were closing in every day. But it refused. Not if I were forced to comply with the council's requests.
Ivy was not the kind of person I needed in my life, so I wouldn't want to mate with her. I felt sick to my stomach at the thought of her and everything she stood for. Instead of being the person I had picked for myself, she was the one my father had picked for me.
Emerald had already won my heart.
She was the only person I could see myself with and the only one I cared about. Furthermore, despite my best efforts, I was unable to alter the situation. Abruptly I got up and paced the room. Anxious energy was still flowing through me despite the familiar rhythm of my steps.
Despite my desire to rebel against the council, I was compelled to comply with their demands, and I detested the sense of being trapped. I was exhausted from the weight of it all. I gazed at the ancient map on the wall that depicted the lands that my family had previously controlled.
I felt the soiled paper under my fingertips as I ran my hand over the edges. The Alpha had been my father. He had ruled with power, and even though I frequently disapproved of his strategies, I couldn't deny that he was capable of making difficult choices.
I wished he was here. Despite my reluctance to acknowledge it, I was sick of bearing the weight by myself. It was now all on me, even though my father had been our pack's real leader.
I recalled how he had brought me up, encouraging me to be the next Alpha and teaching me the importance of strength, determination, and unwavering resolve. But right now I just felt uncertain. Although I had always opposed my father's authority, I could now appreciate the strain he had to endure.
I needed a break. I had to get out. How though? Though my mind was racing no answers emerged. I detested that the council's wish had become my burden and the responsibility was oppressive. Emerald was very dear to me.
Nobody, not even my relatives could make me stop loving her. Yet here I was torn between my heart and my duty. At that moment I was distracted from my thoughts by a gentle knock on the door. For a moment, I stood motionless, not knowing who it might be.
My chambers were never visited unless there was an emergency. I felt my heart pounding. Had they finally arrived to remind me of my responsibilities or was it the council? With caution and a keen sense of intuition, I walked toward the door.
I turned the handle slowly opening it just enough to get a quick look outside. However, I couldn't find anyone when I looked. I furrowed my brow as I felt bewildered.
I walked into the corridor, looking both ways, but the silence was uncanny. There were no footsteps. No sounds. There was nobody in the hallway. Still unsure of who might have knocked I slowly closed the door.
Was it a message of some kind or was it a practical joke? I heard a disturbing noise as I turned back toward the room my mind still racing with questions. The alarm bells a high-pitched sound. It was loud and startling, reverberating through the hallways, its urgency piercing the quiet like a knife.
My heart beat faster. What was going on? No alarm was ever set off unless there was a serious situation. an attack by a rogue. A danger. There was a problem, and I wasn't ready for it. An adrenaline rush went through me as my instincts took over. My steps were quick and determined as I hurried to the door without stopping to think.
I was overcome with a sense of dread that made it difficult for me to breathe. What was the cause of the alarm and what did it indicate? It sounded like the bell was getting louder and more desperate.
As I hurried down the hallway my thoughts were racing with all the possible outcomes. I felt like I had no control over the universe itself which seemed to be pulling me in all directions at once. I stopped motionless as I got to the top of the stairway leading to the main hall.
One more sound. Steps. Quick and methodical reverberating behind me down the corridor. My pulse accelerated as I turned swiftly. Just moments before I was positive that I had been by myself in the hallway.
I looked but there was still no one in the hallway. There was nobody in the area. In my throat, I caught my breath. Despite my instincts telling me to get up and move, I couldn't get rid of the uneasy feeling.
It felt strange like the quiet before the storm. The alarm bell rang once more louder than before and I felt a sudden wave of panic.
With my thoughts no longer on the empty hallway, I turned back to the stairs, my heart pounding. What was happening? Was there a threat?
All my nerves cried out for me to flee and see what was going on, but as I was about to head for the main hall door, a sudden icy chill went through me. I thought someone was watching me. I couldn't get rid of the unnerving sensation.
Even though the alarm was still blaring in the distance the pounding in my chest now overpowered it. Time seemed to have slowed down and the world around me felt oddly still. Something was on the way. Something that I sensed but couldn't see.
I knew that this was only the beginning but I had no idea what to anticipate. I was also unprepared for what followed.
