CHAPTER 37
CHAPTER 37
ALPHA ALAN’S POV
My car pulled in almost the same time the ambulance got to the venue. Emily ran outside—her shirt, bum short and thigh was smeared with blood.
“Where is she?” I yelled. The paramedics followed behind, hurling their medkit.
At this point, what mattered to me most was her safety. I wouldn't forgive myself if I was the reason someone took their life. I was mad, but not when her life was at stake. Emily led the way into the apartment.
“Mother of life!” I exclaimed at the sight of Aurora laying lifeless in a pool of her own blood and a kitchen knife, laying next to her with her wrist slit open. “Aurora!” I yelped, running towards her but the paramedics were faster.
“Stand aside, sir,” they shoved me aside, lifting her off the blood.
The female lead of the team quickly unzipped her bag, pulling out some dressing kits to contain the blood loss. The other pressed two fingers beside her neck, checking for her pulse.
“Come on. Come on!” I balled my hand into a fist, muttering under my breath with unease.
“I got a pulse!” The blonde paramedic exclaimed. A wave of chill washed over me.
They quickly wrapped the cut, connecting the infusion line and a breathing aid on her before slowly lifting her into a stretcher.
“Make way! Out of the way!” They cautioned, carrying her off the scene into the ambulance. While Emily joined them, I drove in my car, tailing them behind.
Emily and I waited impatiently at the reception while she was rolled into the accident and emergency ward.
“What really happened?” I queried Emily who sat on a bench, involuntarily stomping her foot while biting her nails. Her face was stricken with fear and worry.
“I don't know,” she responded with teary eyes. “She called me and wanted to come over but I was a bit busy. She decided to stay at a lodge and….and I asked for a live location which she shared then, I got there to find her unconscious,” she sobbed.
“It's all my fault. I'd have let her stay over at my place. I could have kept an eye on her. She wouldn't have done this to herself,” she kept crying in self-guilt.
“Come here,” I pulled Emily closer, wrapping my arms around her. “Shhh! It's okay. It's not your fault,” I stroked her hair, calming her down. “It wasn't your fault.”
I couldn't help but blame myself for this. What if she had died? What would I have told everyone? To what gain? Kingship? Royalty? My heart bled with guilt. I could have handled the situation much better.
While I consoled Emily, the door to the ward creaked open. Emily and I broke off our hug, dashing towards the doctor.
“Is she okay?” My senses flared. Curiosity, etched in my tone.
“Uhmmm…we would need a blood transfusion immediately. She's lost a lot of blood. Who amongst you is an O-negative?”
“I am!” Emily quickly responded.
“Alright, come along for the screening.” Emily nodded, pacing behind the doctor until they both disappeared into a corner.
About an hour later, the doctor called for me.
“Alpha, I need to have a word with you,” he said. “This way,” he pointed to the direction of his office.
I rose from my seat following him behind. My stomach twisted from the strong antiseptic smell struggling to mask the metallic scent of blood from different emergency cases. We walked past the crazy area into a more serene space when I caught a glimpse of Emily sitting close beside Aurora's bed, resting her head on it.
The sack of blood, slowly drained into the infusion set, emptying into her vein. My gaze lingered for a few seconds before pacing up to meet the doctor.
“Take a seat,” he said, offering me a chair the moment we got into his office.
“How is she doing?” I quickly asked, cutting off the formalities.
“Thank goodness, she's fine and responsive. The cut was a deep one but we were able to suture it. All things being equal, she should be up in about a few hours,” he assured.
“Thank you Doctor,” I leaned back into my chair, breathing a sigh of relief.
“But, I've got a few questions for you, sir.”
“Go ahead,” my brows furrowed.
“Does she have any history of any psychotic episodes?” He queried, ready to jot down my response.
“No, doctor. At least, none that I know of. Why do you ask?”
“Nothing actually. I wanted to understand her mental history and why she would possibly be suicidal. Is she going through some traumatic situation?” His brows knitted together.
“Uhmmm,” I was caught between telling him the truth and covering up. I chose the latter. “No Doctor, she was just fine. I'm shocked to hear and see this,” I reaffirmed.
He stared at me for a while. I'm sure my expression would have betrayed my words. I remained calm watching his scribble notes on his pad.
“It's okay then. So she has to be closely monitored for a period of time. I've written down some prescriptions that would help relax her mind,”
“Thank you so much Doctor. Is it okay to see her now?” I asked.
“Yes of course,” he responded. “I'd be there with you shortly.”
I rose from my seat, thanking him again with a handshake before exiting the office. I got to the ward and by this time she was already awake though fainting speaking to Emily.
“Hey?” I said softly unsure if my presence was going to trigger anything. Emily turned in my direction with a faint smile.
“She's awake now,” she announced.
I didn't speak. I only nodded slowly walking towards Aurora as our gaze met. Her expressions instantly change. She was about to cry. I hastened my steps, meeting her by the bedside.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, tears rolling down her eyes as she sobbed.
“Noooo! Shhh!” I cooed, wiping her tears. “You do not owe me an apology. I should be the one apologizing for pushing you this far. I could have handled things much better than I did,” I leaned closer to her face, speaking softly into her ears.
“I couldn't bear the shame. I knew how much you wanted this and I ruined everything. I couldn't bear to see you crumble,” she continued crying.
I planted a soft kiss on her forehead, cheek, hand and lastly on her lip, pushing some loose hair off her face.
“You don't have to worry about it, okay? All I want from you is to get better and we can figure the rest out. Promise me you will,” I held her other hand up to my chest with a smile.
I snapped my gaze towards Emily who just sat there smiling.
“I want to say thank you to you for being such an amazing friend. You are the real hero of this incident. Had you not called or sought help, who knows how bad things would have gotten?”
“It's nothing, Alpha Alan,” her cheeks turned pink. “Before Aurora became your Luna, she has always been my best friend even though she wanted to abandon me for the great beyond,” she rolled her eyes playfully. “I'd always be there for her,” she chuckled softly.
Amid the entire reunion and forgiveness, my phone buzzed snapping me back to the reality I was facing before Aurora’s accident.
I pulled out my phone, it was my beta, Jeffery. “Sorry ladies, I have to take this call,” I pleaded with a slight nod, excusing myself.
“Hello Jeff, What's up,” I picked up, walking out of the room.
“Alan,” Jeff’s voice came urgent and clipped, the kind of tone that made my spine stiffen. “I’m at the police department right now. We’ve been able to pull up some data from the surveillance cameras recovered from the fire.”
The hair on my skin stood the moment I heard that. “Hold on. I need to get to somewhere less crowded,” I paused him, quickly moving to a less noisy part of the hospital before settling by the sculpted statue, distant from the wards.
“Go ahead, talk to me. What did they find?” I wore my emotions on my sleeve.
Jeff drew a breath on the other side, then continued, “The FBI ran a face check on the suspect in the footage and it has been matched the identity of one Rashaun Briggs. He’s a known criminal, Alan. Convicted for multiple crimes, including arson.”
My brows furrowed. “Rashaun Briggs? That name doesn't ring a bell,” I paused, trying to rake through my memory for such a name but nothing came through.
“What else?” I pressed, my pulse quickening, a low growl threatening to spill out.
Jeff didn’t hesitate. “The suspect is already on his way out of Nightbane. Surveillance cameras spotted him at the Night bane international airport. The police alerted airport security the moment the match came through. They’re on high alert. I'm positive he'd be picked up,” he stated.
My skin already began to pickle the moment I heard an attempted escape. There was no way I was going to let that happen.
“Put me on to the detective!” I growled, my blood slowly boiling up.
“Hello Alpha Alan. This is Detective Miles on the line sir.”
“Hello Miles…what's the status?”
“Well sir, the airport security are tracking him down right now,” he reported.
“Ensure he does make it out of Nightbane or else….”
“There would be no need for threats sir,” he cut me off. “We'll get the job done.”
“Pass the phone back to Jeff,” I requested.
After a moment, Jeff's voice came through the line.
“Yes Alpha?” Jeff spoke.
“Ensure you keep an eye on the process. I'm on my way down there.” I instructed ending the call.
I hurriedly went back to Aurora's ward. She was giggling with Emily over a TV series playing on the screen.
I didn't hesitate, I broke the news to them.
“I'm sorry ladies, but I have to leave now!”
